  • Today I am planting something I have been wanting for a while. I think I have found a great spot for it to thrive in my yard and I found three nice plants. Let me tell you about why I think this is a great plant, and why I've chosen the space I have for it, while I plant.
I garden in zone 3 Saskatchewan, Canada. We have an average of 110 frost free days and yearly fluctuations in temperature from around -40C (-40F) to 40C (104F). My soil is heavy clay that I have mulched and amended over the past 12 years of planting. I grow vegetables and ornamentals in ground, raised beds, and containers. I focus on sustainable gardening that is friendly to the pollinators and wildlife that visit my yard. Subscribe to my channel to follow along as my garden evolves.

Hello Prairie Plantgirl, I always learn something new. I will do the same for my tulips. Cute dog.

Oh thank you. Just make sure they’ve wilted a bit to send some nutrients back to the bulb. Then if they easily separate from the bulb with a quick tug I find they are ready. I used to always wait until tulip leaves had yellowed, but I haven’t found a difference in repeat performance with this method. It just makes the flower beds look so much nicer.

@@PrairiePlantgirl Thanks. Ya I use to wait until they are brown.

A beautiful green plant, yes it does self seed but I'd consider it controllable in our climate at least. We have a drift of lady's mantle around 10 by 10 feet and occasionally we find one or two volunteer plants pop up here and there but I wouldn't consider it to be the most invasive plant that we grow. Nice to see the fern there, ferns are a great companion as are coral bells and foxgloves. (Sorry, typing as I'm watching and I now see you have anemones there, perfect)! 🍺

I’m glad you approve. The anemones were choking out other plants in that area so I keep them very controlled (it appears maybe too controlled). A 10 x 10 patch of Lady’s Mantle sounds wonderful.

I love Lady’s Mantle. My favourite time is after a rain when the raindrops bead on the leaves. I always leave a few flowers to seed because I love free plants. I don’t find it overly invasive here in Alberta.

It is very beautiful when the leaves collect drops of water.

I love this comment, there are a few plants that make raindrops look like jewels and Lady's Mantle is one of them. 🍺

Thanks for your comment. This is my first time growing it and I’m very excited to see it grow and brighten that space with its yellow flowers.

Looking good there. Linda feels the same way about the left over stems from tulips and dafadils. I always tell her to wait until they are brown as the green stems feed the bulbs for next spring. It's kinda funny as she always wins. Lol 😊. No biggie. I like the way you spend time explaining what you are doing and why. Something that I need to get better at. I hope you are getting some rain. Take care

Go team Linda 😀. You can only look at those things for so long. My tulips come back. I try to wait for them to yellow a bit and give easily. I used to let them brown, but I don’t see a performance difference since I stopped. It’s nice to hear you enjoy my chatty nature. It’s tough to edit because I never stop talking 😊

I hope those perennial pops of chartreuse bring you joy for many years. I had some of those before I moved. I wish I had them again somewhere in my garden. oh and Lamb's Ear I miss those too. But anyway, as you mentioned the foliage is a little different and those yellow-green blooms are going to be fantastic!
Have a good weekend! I look forward to see what you have in store for us in the coming weeks.

Thank you. I debated this for a while because it self seeds so easily. It’s good to hear you miss it. It sounds like any self down seeds are easy enough to remove if needed. Mulch usually helps with that.

Your border is a happy place PPG 😃😎😊. Lady's Mantle isn't something that I'm familiar with so thanks for showcasing it here.

He is a special guy, that Buster 😀. He is obviously very eager to learn all my gardening secrets as he keeps right under my feet 😀. I think Lady’s Mantle is one of those plants that gets left at the garden center because it doesn’t shine in the little grower pots. It has really put on growth in the ground already.

I was wondering what kind of soil mixture is best for this kind of plant?

    • @PrairiePlantgirl
      @PrairiePlantgirl  2 года назад

A nice loamy foil would be best. It likes medium moisture but does not want to sit wet. The soil should drain well.
