- Опубликовано: 28 апр 2022
- This is a 2009 Toyota Highlander that I will be building into an overlanding SUV designed to car camp, trail ride and get me on roads less traveled.
It is a 2009 Toyota Highlander V6 3.5L AWD, it has 95k miles, 19 inch rims, and is completely stock. I plan on building it out and showing how I build it, what goes into it and where I go with it.
So stay tuned for more! 🚙🌲

Cool vid, thx
This is a beast of overhanding machine , yes it is capable with very basic moding, just got lifting kit for my 2011 highlander and going to put on off roading wheels/tires and got light bars and ditch lights as well
That’s clean! Send me a picture of it all done on Instagram 👊🏽👌🏽
Can you please explain ditch lights? How are they different than any otheroff-roading light? I’m fixing to buy either a highlander or RAV4 to set up for light trails and forest roads.
@@robertwest4299 I honestly have no clue. They pretty much do the same thing. Except if you get the ones you put on the top of your car hood then they are higher and you can adjust them. At least that’s my guess!
Very capable vehicle
The Highlander is an amazing vehicle. I have a 13 3.5 awd limited.
I have taken it to some very awesome service trails and beginner off-road paths.
I also plan on making it overland.
But there are not many aftermarket parts unfortunately.
One big one is a good skid plate. And a good lift kit.
Hell yeah! That's awesome!
How relible ia thr engine and gearbox in those highlander from 09-12 ?
I want one 3.5 4x4 are they relible ?
@@leviSyosefit’s a Toyota, why even ask the question? I have 300k on mine, no issues.
@@inherentlyflawed i saw that it got an issue that the motor dies suddenly so toyota are great but must check everything
It's great to have a bit of a forum going here. Keep posting! Very useful information.
Gonna watch and mod my 09 Highlander along with you👍🏽
Let’s do it! I’ll be posting more here soon in September. Going to be posting regularly then 👌🏽
Bruv.. I'm right behind you... but still in the searching phase tho (ha) .. gonna be following for SURE. Best of luck man!!
Thanks man!
Every non sports car can go just about anywhere. I have driven front wheel drive fords, RWD Pontiacs and Buicks on logging roads and mountains back in the day when SUV's did not even really exist. Good tires and average ground clearance will take you almost anywhere.
You should put Super Swamper Bogger Tires on it
I would but I’ll be driving pretty far and don’t feel like killing the gas mileage on it, but they would look badass!
Thank you for this work. I own one and have been looking forward for such a video as this on the RUclips channel. But now?
How did you switch on the AWD system?
It was already switched on, just stays on. No on/off switch unfortunately.
Most newer highlanders have a central diff lock which splits power front and rear 50/50 essentially allowing for 4wd traction, which makes the off road handling very capable
I hate to be a dick , but I could do that in a Honda civic . I also just picked up and older Highlander and am interested in what it can do but this doesn't prove anything to me.
You're not being a dick! Just sharing your opinion man 👍🏽 I agree that you could do this to pretty much any car lol, I just happened to make a video about a highlander!
@@expedition_mike Not to be a dick, but I'm still waiting for someone to "test it's capabilities" Hey good camera work though!
@Southern Alberta Bob
I know this is only word of mouth but my 2013 highlander is supremely capable for both mudding and rutted trail driving, even some light rock crawling is pretty easy if you’re careful on the throttle
Good to know , haven't had it in winter yet which is mainly what I wanted it for however I also do some back country camping so pretty curious about capabilites. Also thinking of some upgrades, just wanting to make sure it's worth it. I chose this over a 4runner because it's cheaper and the gas is cheaper too, plus I like the smaller size. Easy around town but still has 6 + feet of room in the back with the seats down.
@@sab9667 I was looking at a 4runner as well and chose this over it because of the price! It runs great and it gets the job done man, I'm up in Maine right now and its been getting me through some back roads I wasn't sure it was capable of.
Your good. Keep making content. Great personality and camera work. I have a 2013 so that’s why I stopped here
Thank you 👍🏽
How much did you buy it for? I’m looking for the same type of thing
I got mine for $13k with 96k miles on it. You can probably find a better deal somewhere out there!
@@expedition_mike that’s pretty good for the AWD in todays market
@@jamesryoma I agree, it is!
I am buying a 09 with 76k miles for 9k is that good deal? In this market
your 2009 highlander can handle far more tougher trails.
It for sure can! I’ve come to find this out from driving it across the country multiple times. It can handle a lot!
How much did u buy it for
I got it for $12K, a little on the expensive side.
Dude , I expected you to go off road, this is nothing. I tried to off road my 2012 Highlander 4WD , but it does not do the job well. Does not have torque vectoring system like ATRAC, articulation is not good either. For light dirt roads it's ok vehicle, but for off road . . .just buy a 4Runner.
Unfortunately I don’t have the money for a 4Runner haha not yet at least.
@@expedition_mike Same here , cannot decide between 4runner and GX 460
@brucesn6414
Dude, why stop at a 4Runner, may as well get a Unimog.
watch JonDZ_Adventuring, you don’t need ATRAC, he has a 2019 Honda Passport AWD, and before that a 2015 Forester XT, with some mods.
As long as the car has AWD, sufficient torque, enough clearance, and decent tires, and a skilled driver, and I mean very skilled.
We all have to start somewhere.
