    When you show that full shot of the car with the antennas on top, my mouth dropped open hello from Phoenix, Arizona I own a GRMS radio that I’ve never even turned on that account for anything? I really want a 50 W mobile even though I don’t know what I would do with it.

      HAHA! Yes, my car can be quite overwhelming. In my experience, GMRS is more of a tool for specific gatherings instead of a preferred medium for reaching out to strangers. Ham radio is the place to be if your interest is in seeing who you can reach. I'll address your other comment in a separate post. Thanks for visiting!

    ICOM still produces a good all band mobile radio. I'm using the IC-7100 in my mobile run all digital modes 160m + 2M & 70cm all modes + Dstar. Can do all digital modes via the internal USB sound card attached to my "Surface Go 2." I like modes that allow me to relay messages from very remote locations in the deserts and forests hours from the edge of pavement. Favorite modes from remote locations are JS8Call and Winlink.
    Using the recording feature isn't lazy. I use it in timer mode on 160m when I know I'm getting out but no one is responding.

    • @StealthGTI
      @StealthGTI  Год назад

      Nice! I wish my 891 would do automatic sends on a timer! I *almost* bought an IC-7100; but I couldn't get past the form factor of the desktop head unit and how I would use it in my car. I hope the eventual replacement is a bit more "mobile." Thanks for visiting!

      @@StealthGTI I use a Panavise mount to the passenger side of the hump up to the 1/4-20 screw on the bottom of the head. The ball mount allows you to connect to a sturdy part of the vehicle and extend up to a comfortable position. You can order directly from panavise.
      IC-7100 Tip Save a configuration for each digital mode you want to use. That way you can set the audio levels for each software/mode separately in the 7100. Set and forget! If you change laptops it's easier to get it working fast, because there all going in and out at the same level in the laptop. Also allows you to adjust phone audio without effecting data. There's a little bug that doesn't flatten the audio in data mode on TX or RX I don't remember.
      Take the time to calibate the soundcard, all audio is going through the internal soundcard on the 7100, so the higher you go in frequency the more off frequency you will be.

    OK, I’m so overwhelmed at this point. I’m just gonna subscribe to your channel. Who do you talk to with all the stuff and what I just don’t understand I love technology but what in the world would I do with all this stuff right now I’ve got three GRMS radios. I’ve got one of those T8 HT’s which is supposedly 10 W HAM And GMS radio . the only problem is as far as licensing goes all I have is my Private pace license with instrument rating and my UAS certificate, but I don’t have anything as far as radio licenses. That’s probably a problem for transmitting. OK I’m gonna let you finish the video thanks a lot.

      My radios operate on a variety of bands. So, although I have four microphones, they pack the capability of having many more since I can switch between bands. My primary band is ~146 MHz, aka "2-meters." That's the one that I use every day to talk with local hams. The others are for when I want to talk outside of my region or to contest and experiment. It's overkill, for sure, but it's all part of the fun. Check out my "KE4WMF" play list for more videos specific to ham radio. I have a rather long "FAQ" video there, too. Take Care!

    Great video, you have a very complex system and great to see your install.
    I have found running the ft710 from the car has been a real game changer for performance but I went for the simple install. I use diamond HFCL range of mono band antennas.
    I also do livestreaming from the car which has been a real journey of discovery but it is mostly for recording long distance dx as I find some disbelieve a small compromised antenna can perform that well.
    Parked up by the sea of course is my big secret, so I hope we can have a mobile to mobile contact one day.

      Which do you think "destroyed" it more, the radio equipment or the 322,000 km that I've put on it in the past seven years? 😜 If I was shopping for an HF antenna again, I'd probably go with one of the smaller Tarheels. There's nothing wrong with the Scorpion. However, I bought it with the thought that I'd add an amplifier. Now that an amp is not a priority, I easily could have chosen something smaller. If you Jetta has an automatic transmission or DSG, then there's probably a nice big plug below the steering wheel port where the clutch pedal mechanism would pass. Have a look there. Otherwise, you'll need to try at the main harness. If it's like my Mk7, you'll need to remove the battery and peel back some insulation to see it. Yes. My radio is over 15 years old and has spent plenty of time in hot cars. I sent my radio to WD8BWW for repair. E-mail him through QRZ. He says the new part is an upgrade that's more durable. He's replaced plenty of these screens with the new part and has only seen two come back. One had been dropped quite violently and another had overheated when a nearby big-rig caught fire. That seems like a decent track record to me! Good Luck!

    Hello, I'm a fairly new general. Looking to install a 2 m/70 cm and ideally HF capable mobile rig into my car, which is currently a camry hybrid. Any recommendations as to the best all around mobile radio and antenna setup? I hear electrical noise from the alternator is an issue. And I really have no idea how to install an antenna on the car except via the moon-roof. I'd like a permanent installation though that doesn't involve ripping up the interior of the car's ceiling. Thanks -- Darin / KN6KLL

    • @StealthGTI
      @StealthGTI  Год назад

      Hey Darin! When I had a Jetta (sedan), I chose to go with trunk mounts, first a lip mount and eventually a drilled NMO. Although the trunk is arguably not as effective as the roof (and barely), it certainly removes any risks associated with cutting a hole in the roof, especially with modern sunroofs and airbags. BTW, I do not have problems with alternator noise. Good Luck!

      Have the "sad hams" found me? Welcome! The ARRL defines a mobile station as a "station which is contained in a legally licensed, self-propelled, land-based vehicle capable of movement before, after, or during the QSO and which provides all power to the radio equipment (no commercial or external electrical power...), and using only antennas mounted fully on the same mobile vehicle or a directly connected attachment and which moves together any time the vehicle is moved... Any contact made with antennas set-up or usable only when stopped to make the QSO (for example, a dipole or yagi) is classified as 'portable' and not 'mobile.'"
