Second this. Electricity and radio waves absolutely boggles my mind and I still don't fully understand most of it, but I still passed my technicians exam a couple years ago.
There are places you can take practice tests that consist of the exact same questions that are on the real test. I just wanted it for an HT radio and not to actually set up a proper ham radio, so I just memorized the parts about dipole antennas, building your own, etc.

I started off slow. I got my tech license 2 years ago, a month later, got my general. I played around for a few months, then stopped. A year ago, roughly, started with POTA. Started hunting, then, after about 6 months of hunting, went out and activated a park. Then, got hooked. Got a smaller HF radio (xiegu G90), for portable. Got the same you have as a base station, the ICOM 7300. Now, I am hooked on QRP, and use my xiegu X6100. I try for a small package-the radio, the wire antenna, and my logging tablet, all fit into a radio case. I have totally gone down the small QRP hole. My goal radio is the Lab599 X500-someday!!! But, right now, still learning the x6100.
I love throwing the case into a backpack, hiking into a park, and setting up what I call my "stealth deployment" radio. Brings back fond Army memories, lol.

Great vid. Licensed in 2018, here, General in 2019. The great thing about POTA is that it provides a wonderful 'platform' to encourage us all to grab our battery and gear and head out....and as you say...PRACTICE the communication craft. Having the stuff at home on a bench doesn't do anything for anyone in an actual emergency, if the operator doesn't know how to use it. Getting out and setting up (plus having fun!) puts check marks in every box. The other great thing about POTA is that you generally aren't having to call endless CQs. Once spotted, the ball is moving and you're actually talking to people. Very best wishes. 73, Tim

    Very well done.
Nit pick: FRS devices after 2017 are allowed up to 2 watts. Before then 1/2 watt. They are UHF and you can't improve the antenna. So unless your in the hills around the Salt lake and talking to someone down on the flats, you're not going far.
CB is in the higher end of the HF band and limited to 4 watts. If the radio is capable of SSB; that becomes 12 watts. Many people communicate internationally with that. NO license required.
"I'll just use it when SHTF and not worry about licensing". I'm a part of a Mutual Assistance Group. I attempted a net for testing and it failed spectacularly. I gave out great information for success and there were members that didn't understand how to adjust their squelch. This was after two training classes.
Get your equipment out and listen. Find repeaters, NOAA, Nets. Figure out how to improve the equipment you have (focus on the antenna, line of site).

I agree with your comment, "General is best bang..." A General has SSB (voice comms, for those who may be considering a license) privileges across all amateur bands and the additional privileges afforded by Extra Class is only a little bit more of the same...IMO. Advice to those who may be incoming...When you pass your Technician test the VEs (those who offer/grade tests) will ask you if you want to take the General exam...right then and there. Just study and take practice exams for both Tech and General...Pick up Tech and General in one testing session.

Interested in that HF antenna you set up. If I can get better ideas from others I'm going to use them. I am all about being able to operate off-grid, whether base, mobile, and HT's attached to my kit. I crossband my/others HT's into my mobiles...which then communicates with base as well as others. Definitely fond of FRS, GMRS, MURS. They are simply another tool in the tool box. I have/use CB+. As a prep the better we can communicate (even if just listening in full grid down, which will be VERY important) the better off we are. General class...KD0BDH

    Yes, Sir.
I do believe that we are on to something here. If this does turn into a regular series, maybe we can get some literature in our Battlbox?
My only request would be to not forget to include GMRS. It's usually considered an introductory course to the HAM. The equipment is usually cheaper, it extends the use of the FRS units that most people already have, and mobile enough to help establish wider nets for base camps.
    Catch you later.

    Hi brother.
So last week my wife and I where doing some camping and fishing on a buddy farm. It's big over 8000 acres of land. Has ponds all over some that may not been fishing in 30 + years. The wife and I where camping off my solar powered DIY golf cart. We like to ride around fish in the ponds then set up camp for the night next to a pond. Well my buddy truck that I used to get fire wood had a battlbox in it. When I got back to his place to drop off the truck I asked about the box. He told me how it was a gift from his father-in-law and he had it for like over a year riding around in the truck. He asked me if I would like to use it on are camping/fishing trip on his farm that coming weekend.
I did and SO glad I did. Was a lot of fun. It had a small kit in it with a rattletrap. Wife stopped using it after the 12 fish in a row. She says it was cheating. There where some cool rubber worms and jigs in there.
Just wanted to thank you for the awesome time we had. This will be one trip my wife and I tell are grand kids about. We just had a BLAST. Of course there was a lot of other fun things that happened as well. Like me falling in one of the ponds. LOL Thanks so much for being part of are fun weekend but most of all lifetime memories.
    God Bless,
    Bobby's Solar
