I’m a GenX old lady in northern California here. When those steering wheel locks came out, they were advertised on broadcast TV as “The Club.” 😉 You can’t be over forty, Dave. At least, I wouldn’t believe it if you told me. Never grow old! It’s mainly a state of mind, not just chronology. Thanks for showing us that nifty new Starlink Mini! ☮❤🐾
Great review! Thanks for sharing. I am so glad I have not ordered my Starlink yet. I didn't know about the "mini". Also thanks for reviewing the service too. I just ordered my Starlink Mini!!😁
4:55 - I am genuinely surprised you know what that is. We used to call that “the club” and that specific name brand was red and had info-mercials on television ALLLL the time!!
One problem I can see, is if the router is “built in” to the mini and that gets positioned quite a distance away, then you will have a poor signal surely. What’s the range on the built in router? 🤔
Yes that is also correct. So for large structures like homes with ADUs, and other building on the property the Standard Gen3 kit is better. But for Van lifers/boat people it's perfect. The Starlink Mini dish's Wi-Fi signal can broadcast up to 50 feet away, but some users have reported receiving a signal as far as 400 feet with a clear line of sight. The Mini dish also has a built-in Wi-Fi 5 router.
I don’t understand the “pause” feature. So for example, if I was to use Starlink just one weekend in a given month - I get charged for the WHOLE month - and not just the weekend. Correct? 🤔
Yes that's correct. It's based on your billing period, "If you pause your service before the end of your current billing period, you will still receive service for the remainder of your billing period. When you un-pause your service, the monthly subscription fee will be charged immediately, on a pro-rated basis dependent on the plan monthly cost and time remaining on your pre-determined account billing cycle."
You’ll want your usage periods to be as close to the end of your billing cycle as possible to take advantage of the prorate. I picked the 20th, to avoid our trips across month end for major holidays using 2 months. If I could do it again, I’d pick the 10th so I could have almost 2 weeks before I unpause.
0:15 - Mmm!!! Oh Sir, hellooo!!!!! 🤤🤤 you can’t be coming on screen looking sooo handsome without warning, you’ll give this old lady a heart attack!! 💞💓
How about run a test while in motion? Stream a movie while driving down highway. Do the same while on winding back road. And off road. They say not to... but throw a buddy in passenger seat and lets see.
@@DaveOTG yeah saw that. BUT the "up to 2 months" REALLY puts a damper on just how FAR you can "roam" - you can't. It's not global. It's a contradiction.
FYI you can’t run it off 12 volt! My RV has lithium batteries so I had 13.2 volts. Needs about 16-18 volts minimum. I had to install a 12 volt to 24 volt booster to fire up my Mini.
@@DaveOTG The DC power cable in the Starlink spec sheet is listed as 5.5mm x 2.5mm. However, when I checked several online shops, they show it as 5.5mm x 2.1mm. This has really confused me. Could it be that the DC power cable has two different ends, with the end that connects to the dish being 5.5mm x 2.1mm and the end that connects to the power supply being 5.5mm x 2.5mm? I'm not sure if this is the case.
amzn.to/3SspYxj this cable works perfectly. I'm not too sure what your application is? Are you trying to connect the mini via USB-C? Starlink is also offering a much longer barrel to USB-C cable that is guaranteed to work..
Starlink upload speeds can be painfully slow based on: weather, obstructions, & prioritized plans. Makes me sad boi

I used to love watching infomercials as a kid and remember "The Club!"
Thanks for the review of the Starlink Mini. I'm thinking about purchasing it, just hoping the price drops a bit. I love my "Club"!

Ayye Congrats!
Any tips on how to make it work in an apartment such as on a balcony or potentially inside?
You can mount it to a tripod and a small weight or sandbag for outdoor. Inside it can be mounted behind a moonroof or sunroof in the house.
I’m so excited to have my mini. I am not full time, but doubt I will ever mount it because maybe I will want to park in the shade.
Smart!
Will it work through glass when you put it on your dashboard? That would be cool. Thanks for the review.
Yes, this is exactly what I show in the video
How do you backpack with the mini? Does it hold a charge for a while? Or do you have to have a power source in the backpack with it?
You will need a power source that supports USB-C up to 100W. There are plenty of small battery banks like this one: amzn.to/4dsCipa
@@DaveOTG awesome thank you … from a Coloradan that got it for work on the Flattops 😃
@@tammyedinger6958 Oh nice! I'm also in Colorado atm
@@DaveOTG I saw that!!🤩
5:38 - you and that sound,.. 😂
You make me laugh!!
I love the sound lolol
Dave: "Hey Baby, let me lock my CLUB on your WHEEL!" 😂
The dashboard idea will work until the temperatures get too hot The maximum operating temperature I believe is 120° f
In a Tesla you have ventilation and optional A/C while stationary (even when locked and away from the car).
Do you have to owner a standard unit and then ADD the mini on to the standard unit’s existing plan? Or can you purchase the mini and a plan by itself?
That was part of the soft launch of the mini, but now, anyone can buy just the mini and service by itself.
Awesome Mini wow thanks for info😊
Will the signal PASS THROUGH GLASS / THICK plastic?? During Florida storms some stated the wind blowed over the disc
Yes even fiber glass
So with the Starlink you dont have a phone service? Its just internet?
You can turn on wifi calling in your phone so you can have phone service and Internet
Starling mini = awesome!
K
I definitely want one! Good review BF

Will it still work when traveling overseas to several different countries?
Yes, but you need to have the global plan. I believe
Will Starlink Mini Roam -50GB have global coverage?
Yes you can get a global plan on the starlink mini but it is not limited to 50 GB

did I see that right about the mounting bracket? A magnet option?
Yes. Lots of magnet mounts for the mini!
Awesome for my steel boat! ✊🏼
Keep in mind, there's a boat service plan separate from the regional plan as well
Can you purchase roam mini plan for starlink standard?
No, I believe they have different plans

They are now offering it + global coverage for $165. That's the new price for unlimited

what is the prefered ethernet cable colour/spec
Starlink website is selling the ethernet cable now
Can one do a snail mail order and pay for service with snail mail?

I run it via USB-C or a 12v socket plug just fine. Maybe a difference in nomenclature, but it can run on DC power
Starlink Mini users, help! Need to know the barrel jack size on the power cable. Is it 5.5mm x 2.1mm or 5.5mm x 2.5mm?
Link to specific cable in description

It takes 2 seconds to cut that steering wheel.
For $20, it keeps honest people honest
lol dude thats a waste of money they can cut that or your wheel in seconds. It would be better used as a weapon and not car security.
