Easy Tomato Rasam | தக்காளி சூப் ரசம் | Ammavum Naanum Episode #22 | Rakesh Raghunathan

- Tomatoes cooked in a special rasam powder that is made specially for this (recipe in the video). With flavour from the rasam powder combined with tomatoes, tang from the tamarind and sweetness from the sugar, this rasam is a killer. Ingredients & recipe mentioned down below (in english)
Ingredients:
* Tomatoes - 250 gms
* Tamarind - small gooseberry size
* Water - 1 lt ( split 250 ml + 750 ml)
* Turmeric powder - 1/2 tsp
* Salt
To grind to a powder:
* Coriander seeds - 1.5 tbsp
* Whole black pepper - 10 nos
* Cumin seeds / Jeera - 1 tsp
* Toor dhal - 1 tsp
* Red chillies - 3
Tempering:
* Ghee / clarified butter - 2 tsp
* Mustard seeds - 1 tsp
* Curry leaves - 1 sprig
Method:
1. Pressure cook tomatoes with tamarind in 250 ml of water for 3 whistles. Alternatively, you can boil this too.
2. Once pressure releases, grind to a puree and strain the skin of the tomatoes/ fibre of the tamarind using a sieve.
3. Grind ingredients mentioned under 'grind to a powder' to a fine powder.
4. In a vessel, boil the pureed tomato juice with some salt and turmeric powder.
5. Once this boils, add the ground powder and mix well. Let this come to a boil.
6. Heat ghee in a separate wok and temper with mustard seeds , curry leaves and pour over the boiling rasam.
7. Serve hot as a soup/appetiser or pour over hot rice mixed with ghee.

Your tomato story has made me think, when we were little we used to eat home grown tomatoes with sugar in Jaffna, we used to make tomato jam, potato and tomato kulamboo and it was also used in sambal and salads. Since coming to UK only I have learnt to add it to curries and rasam and you name it to all the dishes be it western or Asian cooking. Actually I have been stocking up tomato cans lately just in case too.

Would you please tell me what is the name of hing which is soft and stretchable? The variety name both in English and Tamil. I saw experts like your mom are using that variety in YT videos, instead of the popular LG brand asafoetida powder.
Tomato rasam made in whatever way is always tasty and reliable, especially when your nostrils become mini Niagara.
Do we need to dry roast the to grind ingredients?
