he's not a douche at all. he's a cool dude. he's just more flamboyant than your average cat
I actually learned how to run a stereo amp rig and get a starting point for my guitar tones from this video. Sure, Phil X is flamboyant, but he's very knowledgeable about tones and how to run your gear and things like that. Sometimes you have to weave through the personalities just to get little nuggets of information that stick with you.
Like Phil said, get to know your gear man, which that's TRUTH right there and that is a never ending subject(s) that Noone will ever exhaust out all the variables, and possibilities, and the same holds true for learning music and then applying all that never ending knowledges to the learning and playing of any instrument ! ! ! 👍

I just came across this. For not having much sleep they all were pretty chipper! Short attention span due to a lack of sleep. I don't think anyone was being rude or egotistical. I have seen quite a few of Chappers vids and he is usually much more energetic. I think this is a great video all things considered. Looked to me like they were all getting along quite well. Thanks for sharing Rob!

I emailed Phil out of the blue the othher day asking him for guitar advice.. Didn't expect anything to come from it but he replied about an hour later with a kickass answer. Proper down to earth sound guy!

Well that's just his personality, and his playing style is based on what he likes to play, I mean just cause his music is less complicated doesn't make him any less of a guitarist or any less of a musician, he just has his own specific taste and style. You still can't deny that he is an extremely skilled and knowledgeable guitar player who really knows his stuff.

What a self important man Mr X is.
The tone bender is a fuzz pedal. Distortion pedals use circuit boards and clipping diodes to mimic the distortion you get from a cranked tube amp. Fuzz pedals overload the circuit to produce more of EVERYTHING, including gain, sustain and bass. There is a BIG difference between the two.

Yay for the Bad Monkey. I use mine as a *slightly* dirty bass boost for those moments when you just need that little bit more grunt.
Can't believe how simple Phil's rig is! Most guitar gods have truck loads of rack gear they show off in these type of interviews. Phil is doing the opposite.... almost bragging about the lack of gear instead, but it works for him so well...some very tasty playing as well and nice tones BTW!
They should add a small figure of Phil-X on the neck pickup cavity. That would be kick-ass!
I made what was perceived to be a negative comment towards Mr. X when this video was first posted and was met with a lot of resistance, so I took it down, but in the meantime lots of people seem to have gotten the same vibe that I did. I totally agree with a lot of what Phil says about tone and not overusing gain.. but he does seem to be a bit gratuitous at times... a little too "I never wear blue, 'cause I'm so dark and mysterious ". A lot of people enjoy analyzing the whys and hows of equipment.. kinda' the point of an Anderton's video, but when asked a question by Lee Phil says, "now you're treating me like an architect" (???) "I don't know why it does what it does, I just like it." Even though 10 minutes before he says "me and my geek buddies sit around and discuss whether pickups still pull on the strings when not engaged". I've seen lots of dudes like that, taking any opportunity to make themselves look cool by throwing another dude under the bus... but I have learned from his tonal tips here so I guess it's all with a grain of salt.
I wanna explain about the booster thing that Phil mentioned:
When you turn back the gain on that pedal, it gives what's called "unity gain". It means that the signal that comes in will come out at the same level.
The "bite" he talks about are the capacitors in that circuit filtering the signal and changing it's frequency response, probably adding more mid and treble.
I think this kind of pedal should have an "invert gain" switch instead of "bypass", so you can get full-blast boost easily.

he's picking and moving the side of his picking hand over the strings, its easy to do, just tremolo pick an open string, then move your hand while you pick and you hit all the harmonic spots of the string :D
