PHIL X AND PETE THORN GUITCON 2017 Pete and Phil Teach You How To Kill

  • Pete and Phil have known each other for ages but this is the first time they've sat down to swap stories, trade and teach licks and ideas, and talk guitar in general. There's a bit of clipping on the guitar sounds on the video- this went down fast and unscripted, so forgive us! We hope you enjoy the video!

Hi guys, hey I wanted to address a comment I made in the video. When i was talking about my in ear pack cutting out, I mentioned that then i had "some little guy behind me, changing my pack". I was trying to kind of paint a Spinal Tap-esque picture of the awkwardness I felt in that moment. Now, the guy that came out to help me, one of the monitor techs, was actually small in stature. So I was referencing that- I'm 6 foot and he was much shorter and I think we were a funny sight in that moment... I was not consciously trying to demean him. But, in listening back to the words i used, I could certainly see how it could come off as being an insensitive comment- why point out someone's size? it was totally unnecessary to the story, and it could certainly be misconstrued or taken a few ways. So I wanted to apologize and say i meant no disrespect, but I was clumsy with my words, and I will try and do better next time. Thanks for watching...

I can't explain how much I love hearing you two talk about and play EVH....I am totally still in awe of the first 6 records! The words you use...like groove and balls...it's so freaking true. When I listen to I'm the One....I just can't believe anyone could just play like that...with attitude timing and groove at that age! I can also feel how much you love playing his riffs...as do I! I would just love to meet Eddie someday...he'd be my #1 pick if I could have dinner with anyone alive or dead. He clearly sees the instrument entirely differently than anyone before him. I think you're both brilliant too...big fan of you both...and a fellow Canuck!

You can so feel the enthusiasm with these guy's; They just love playing new stuff and honing in on the geeky techiques... LOVE IT! This is what Rock is all about... Applying these awesone solos and riffs into cool pieces...

Phil X looks a little tired here, but even then, he plays with the energy of ten men. Always learn so much from these guys.

Great video with two great players/guys. One thing to add about Phil's "bend with the picking hand behind the fretting hand" - neat trick for sure, Rhoads first used it in "Over the Mountain" and "I Don't Know" that I know of, although it wasn't to pull the bend past 2 steps it was for vibrato while trilling - pulling up to 2 steps.
