    The way that I stopped getting nervous playing in front of other people, was to start playing in front of other people as much as possible. If you only play in front of others every once in a while, you make each performance way too big of a deal for yourself, like it's this make it or break it thing where you only have one chance to sound great. As far as playing with a band, just focus on listening to everyone else. You can't even think about being nervous if you're really listening and aware of your surroundings musically. Amazing video!

    • @RE4boyo
      @RE4boyo 6 лет назад +1

      Jamsville people dont realize that everything in life is trial and error, you cant become good by watching videos, you just gott ago out and do it whether its guitar, girls, shooting, parking, running, everything, I go atleast once a week just to keep shape

  • @MrHaydnHarry
    @MrHaydnHarry 6 лет назад +32

    Remind yourself before playing that 99% of people can't play even the simplest thing you can pull off and that if you play the most technical thing literally nobody will even notice. If you look like you're having fun just bending one note people will be way more interested

    • @topdog91
      @topdog91 6 лет назад +3

      And if bending one note isn't fun, keep doing it until it sounds right! ;)

    • @mk0759
      @mk0759 5 лет назад +1

      That and more people at the venue are paying close attention to that blonde's rack than are scrutinising the technical accuracy of your playing

    • @BrianOates
      @BrianOates 2 года назад

      Also, if you look like everything you play is busting arteries in your face from grimacing in pain, very few people will want to watch you. Take chances but have as much fun as you can, if you look relaxed and enjoy being there the audience will be more relaxed and enjoy it too. Who wants to keep going to concerts with all the players pulling constipation faces during their solos?

    I really resonate with what Pete is talking about regarding playing "simple" things. It allows for much more space to actually express rather than trying to impress.
    There are so many impressive players on YT but not that many will touch you on a deeper level with their playing.

    This was such an empowering conversation, with such great advice. I love listening to people who are really great at something and love to share their wisdom, or anything at all that might be helpful. Sometimes people think they don't have much to share or at least anything different to add and they may even think we all already know what they know. Then once you get them talking, WOW! All this great insight and even unique ways of looking at things emerge. I think I could just listen to Pete talk for days about just about anything anyway. Tyler was also probably the most well spoken person at GuitCon. He talked less than most, yet said more.

    Regarding dealing with performance nerves, I think that if you don't have a bit of nervousness before going on stage, it means that you no longer care about doing a good job, and should probably do something else with your time.
    Generally speaking the audience is on your side and wants to see a good show. Most of them are not musicians and probably can't tell if you made a mistake or not.
    If you do mess up, and it's subtle, move on like it never happened and don't advertise that you messed up. If you made a huge mistake, just go with "it's live folks" and laugh at yourself a little.

    Having fun like you guys on that jam at the end is what I aim for.
    Can be very nerve-wrecking to play in front of people, so I get it. Trying to make it fun is something to strive for as much as the technique and knowlege.

  • @natfingerboard
    @natfingerboard 6 лет назад

    I feel like the bigger the gig, the least you gotta do to make an impact, when you are in your room people expect you to give your best since unconsciously they know you are in your comfort zone, but on stage everyone is there to have fun and a long bend has a lot more impact than anything you could've come up with in other situations.

    The best advice I ever got was when I was in school and had only been playing about a year. A music major (piano) friend of mine told me that if you make a mistake when performing don't grimace, don't pretend to laugh it off rather just keep on playing like nothing happened and act like that's exactly what you intended to play. Her other advice was when giving a recital wear your sexiest clothes which was a bit less helpful for me but she felt it worked for her!

    1) its ok to fail 2) Heart and soul (enjoyment) over technical ability wins on a live situation (depending on muisc a bit, but sure apply to any kind of rock.pop.blues. kind of realm). I do not mind people playing 'badly' too much, but I can watch someone that wants to be somewhere else when on stage. 3) play live, play live, play live 4) practice and practice with your band and also practice to be 'loose' with your band 5) tempo
