- Hi everyone. A quick midweek video for you. I've been after a small bandsaw for a while, and this 'WorkZone' one is just £80 (~$100) from Aldi stores. Visually it's a dead ringer for the Scheppach HBS20 from Screwfix, but £30 cheaper and with a 3-year warranty. But is it any good, or just a waste of money? I bought one to find out.

That same bandsaw is sold worldwide by various companies. I have one, branded by Wen, here in the USA. Doesn't have the door safety switches (not a thing here), but everything else is virtually identical. Built my own fence, added better-quality urethane tires, and purchased a set of high-quality high-speed bi-metal blades (cuts wood to metal). A real handy workhorse now. Zero complaints.

I have the same saw painted a different colour and with a different name sticker. It's great. I cut 50mm thick mahogany and ash electric guitar bodies with it. It's more than enough for doing this and it is light enough for me to put under the bench when I'm not using it.

As a very keen D.I.Y.'r with a limited budget I have found that the whole range of tools from Aldi are excellent value and have out performed many of the more expensive "name" brand power tools. I now have almost the full catalogue including air tools and pressure washer, none have given me any problems or disappointed through lack of performance !
Yes, been very impressed with the Aldi Workzone tools that I have - they’re mostly rebadged Scheppach, and I’ve had no problems either 👍👍

I just received my 4th Aldi bandsaw,first 3 were no good,[3rd one had the saw blade coming off the 2 wheels! -wheels were out of alignment]This 4th one works great & its thanks to Peter for saying these are good,-gave me patience!
Sorry you’ve been having problems, but good to hear that - finally - you’re all set! Obviously this video’s a couple of years old (I’ve literally done over 300 videos since this one) so, the bandsaw I bought over two years ago isn’t the saw you’d buy today. If you read through the comments below this video it’s pretty clear that Aldi/Scheppach have had some quality control issues both in the first year after I made this video, and again more recently, and in all seriousness, after 3 replacements and failures, I probably would have given up and bought something else, but I’m pleased that you’ve finally got something workable! Love a happy ending 😆😂👍👍

Hi Peter, great video review of that band saw. I have that exact saw branded as "Work Mate", it seems that to sell stuff here in Aus you have to put mate on the end. Anyway, The saw is as you found out a real little worker, the supplied multi purpose blade will even cut aluminum up to to 1mm. The letdown is the table fence and table, I replaced my table with a wooden one with T track in it and same with the fence.
The adjustable cut height mechanism will strip out after a wile as it's got plastic gears inside but I don't cut anything on this saw thicker than 20mm max, but for the price what would you expect! It dose it's job for me so I'm happy with it.

There are wood workers that use lathes, and those that don't. Lathes are pretty useful, but many wood workers don't have one. I'm a hack at wood working, but one thing I make well is this mission style coffee table. The thing is, the table is round. I have never figured out how to make a round table top with simple hand tools. I used to use a saber saw, hooked to long piece of wood, which I hooked in the middle of the table, and spun around. My saber saw last about eight months. I now use a router, which I spin around on a long board. The routers last a bit longer. I need a band saw, but I just don't have a place for it. thank for the video.

Thanks Peter. I've been slowly accumulating tools for my very basic workshop with a band-saw being low down on the priority list due to cost vs need. But at 80 quid this was too good an opportunity and I was equally impressed with the results as you. The table is a downside. I've seen better designed tables on other models that I don't thing would have increased the cost much, but that's the only niggle. A couple of things I found which your test didn't show. Mine cut well straight out the box, but cut a hell of a lot better once the blade guides and bearings (top and bottom) were adjusted. Band tension adjustment fixed a number of issues when cutting thick sections and curves. But I have to say overall I'm impressed. I have made an 18mm table from melamine face MDF with a better t-track based fence and zero clearance inserts which results in me using it more.

Zachary. Blade alignment is all with these.If you ain't got a band saw, get one. A properly fettled band saw will do whatever you wish, within reason. Rips, crosscuts, curves are a doddle. You can almost toss your jigijig saw away. A band saw cannot lunge cut like a jig saw or scroll saw, but they don't have a band saw's capacity.
Karl - can you enlighten us more in regards to the upgrades you made? Maybe a you tube video showing these? Would be good to see.
My first saw was the Scheppach HBS20 from Screwfix as you mentioned in your video comment and I had a love / hate relationship with it. It was very cheap and once I put a decent Dalkin or Starrett blade on it and spent a lot of time fettling with the tracking and guides to get everything just right it ran pretty well although the fence was stuck in the bin immediately to be replaced with a self made one. Of course on the other hand it is tiny and very limited to what can be done and the motor is very underpowered so resawing whilst can sort of be done within in the height limitations was a tough and long experience. For a lot of woodworkers that do small stuff it's probably all anyone needs but for anyone else a bigger saw will eventually be needed. Oh the other point to note... you can not buy tires for the wheels of this saw... I ended up making my own out of heat shrink tubing material but Scheppach does sell a whole wheel replacement kit but their UK customer services are atrocious!

I've had one for over a year. I am very happy with it, using it at least once a week. My only niggle is that the up/down blade guide thingy has plastic teeth and they jump out of their alloted position and jam up with feral dust. I leave in its full up possie to keep myself calm.
Mine had a terrible vibration straight out of the box. I balance the wheels with hot glue as weight and now it works really well.

Your Festool track or an edge-clamping saw guide/clamp will serve as an excellent short fence. Of course you could just make your own fence as well. I had a Ryobi small band saw that I got years of use from before I obtained and customized a 14" saw. My Ryobi saw was bequeathed to my apprentice.
The fence in this one wasn’t great, but wasn’t terrible. The new one that replaces it - now that was terrible... 😂😂👍👍
I have a similar Canadian made three wheeled bandsaw, and it is possibly my most used tool. I love it! And I got it cheap! I've paid more for replacement blades over the years than I did for the bandsaw itself.
+BoingotheClown They're great little machines - just that mine really wasn't and hadn't been well looked after or maintained, sadly.
I had an Axminster one that was a similar design with a cast table and that machine was all I owned for over 10 years it did everything and I do a lot of curved work. My biggest criticism is that the quality of the blades available is not as wide as the bigger machines. However some Axminster blades and that little Saw will be a very capable little machine.

I had a Craftsman 12" one, probably cost $150. Total junk. The wheels were not straight. Several hours spent adjusting couldn't fix them, they couldn't be shimmed. Made the blade track improperly and throw the blade off at unpredictable times. The adjustments were finicky, blade guards were not user-friendly. Cuts were wavy and rough, even with a more expensive blade. It cut, but I may have just as well used a sabre saw. When I upgraded to a Laguna 14-12 this year, it was like going from a Ford Pinto to a F150. The cost was completely worth it, and more. The moral of the story: save up for good tools.

I got one myself a few months ago under a different brand name (Rockwell) but the same product. The stock blade had a kink in it producing unimaginable drift/wander. But once I fitted a new blade I have also been impressed with the hobbyist tooling. I have found the blade size is a slight draw back as they have to be mail ordered rather then popping down to my local hardware store. But still, for the cheapest bandsaw on the market 2thumbs up.

I bought a Scheppach Basa 1 (with the cast iron table and mitre slot) a while back. I have been very impressed with what it can do - for the price! I have satisfactorily ripped 2mm thick, 3 inch wide English oak inlay stock with no problems. It's not fast, but it does the job pretty well for a bench-top jobby.

I had one of the burgess three-wheel bandsaws when they were new in the 70s. They were rubbish then. In MHO the Aldi power tools are of great value. Bought a cordless drill for about £25 just before the first lockdown its has been great It runs forever on a full charge.
Good job with the review. I have a 9" Ryobi band saw and agree with your assessment. A rip fence would be nice to have, but I have a 10" table saw, a 12" DeWalt chop saw, a Milwaukee sawzall and Bosch handheld jigsaw. With these combinations I don't really miss the rip fence for what I use this saw for in my little garage. I saw metal and wood with success. Keep up the good work. ☺

Blade alignment on band saws is critical for decent, efficient work. Those machines have a particularly crude (but usable) alignment arrangement. You seem to have nailed it. Bunnings in Australia have been flogging Good Luck Dragon tools under the Ozito brand (now owned by Einhell). They're expanding into the UK so you will probably be able to pick them up even cheaper soon. Being found at the bottom of the barrel, they work, but don't expect too much from them. Maintenance is the key to success. If it starts getting noisy, check it and fix it. Don't push it past its limits and keep your thumbs out of the way.

I bought a GMC (similar quality and no longer extant) band saw which broke a blade guide after a short time. While it was a better concept, it was poorly engineered. Bummer. I will now have to cast a better, more robust psrt which will take on the load. My mate Brent will attest that it's always good policy. He partially removed a substantial part of his person while operating one of these saws, using the blade as supplied. There is no reason you should discount the capabilities of cheap band saw blades. They're the part of the machine that does the work. Einhell have been sold in the UK for some time. The Ozito brand, as sold by Bunnings, will probably appear there in the UK under another appellation. The quality is somewhere around Einhell's middle range. That's still close to the bottom of the barrel. Their power x-change range is good value for money.
Great little bandsaw, the Burgess, but the blades didn’t last for me. Finally, it was cheaper to buy a new bigger one , so I bought a Startrite 301. That was decades ago. It’s still going strong.

i have basically the same one but it's from Fox/Delta, i think the brand doesn't even exist anymore, but the saw, it seems, still does. Mine is actually bigger, but it just does it's job, i don't expect anything clean and precise with it, i just use it once in a while to basically cut thru wood faster than i would with my japanese saw !
Yep, great little saws, when used within their capacity. I did another video where l compared this one to a more expensive one from Axminster of the same class/capacity, and it was amazing how similar they were in terms of shape, design etc... Definitely out of the same Mould! 👍👍
I can't find my original comment from an old account, but i commented on this video 6 years ago, and my little bandsaw is still going strong. I just put a new 10mm starrett blade on it today, gave it a good clean, changed the guides, and it thinks it's a 14-inch!!! In the last 6 years, I have made at least 5000 wooden toys with it and used it on average about 4 hours a week, that 1200 hours of use for the cost of it. What a buy

I only today ran into your channel. In spring of this year I bought the same band saw (the Scheppach one). I'm very satisfied with it and I'm happy that your professional opinion is about the same.
The ony issue I have is that saw dust goes everywhere behind the doors where the blade is hidden (in spite of connection it to a vac)

I must admit, being a keen diy'er my shed/workshop is full of the blue workzone tools, I find them very good for occasional usage, and super cheap. deciding whether to buy the air compressor when I next see it and all its attachments. have some metal railing fences I'd like to shot blast and repaint. for me personally, you can't beat Aldi tools.

Yes the compressor is great, and the attachments.. such a handy thing to have .. I have every power tool known to man, thanks to Aldi's :-)
I hope you bought the 3HP compressor if not two to have in tandem as they are barely powerful enough for shot blasting as I found out. luckily I had another smaller compressor to hook up to give the required CFM.
Nice review! We have Aldi stores all over here in the U.S. and they're pretty competitive with Wal-Mart. They carry a lot of hand tools, automotive accessories, electronics, and outdoor products. I just recently purchased a sheet sander and detail sander and they work great. It looks like you guys over there get more of the bigger power tools than we do because I've never seen any tools that big in our Aldi sales fliers.

Hi Pete. Had one of these for two months and the blade guard jammed up. I returned it to Aldi and purchased another one which was delivered yesterday. I set it up as per instructions, plugged it in, pressed start and my RCD tripped. Waiting to here back from Aldi.
Sorry to hear. Seems to have been a few ‘production issues’ with this years model, but I’m sure Aldi/Scheppach will sort it.

I've just had to temporarily decommission my Black and Decker branded three wheeler out due to similar breaker tripping issues. turns out for me it was the winding connections inside the motor shorting out. it got progressively worse until I took it apart to check. wouldn't be surprised if yours was in a similar state. I may just call it a day with it as watching this video it may be more effective just to replace it.

I have a Burgess I bought in the 1970s. Bit rubbishy, frustrating to use, and the blade guides are a joke. BUT it still works and is fine for occasional brief work like curves. I cut some curved softwood glue blocks recently near 2" thick and did some curved oak an inch thick but the 2" wood was seasoned so easier to cut. Oh and you can get the blades.
I have a very old DOALL its one of the best investments I have made .

On your recommendation I bought an ALDI bandsaw and I must admit that so far very pleased with it. For the low price you have to make some changes so this what I did, I replaced the blade guides with brass bar filed flat one side and ground the grub screws flat so that they don’t in-dentate the bar. I also stuck some magnetic strip 1.5mm x 25mm to the bottom of the fence. This stops it sliding around when setting with a square, hope this helps ?

Good stuff! I have a similar sized one from Axminster. Tbh all is fine with it with exception of throat height... it clogs easily to the point where it does not move and I need to strip it and clean. Other than that, a reasonable little saw.
Rack and pinion adjust on Chinese saws. Much better to have a slide and clamp . I find it annoying.
The tiny Axminster band saw is better than this having a cast iron table with mitre slots and other refinements like a solid fence, but you do pay for that with a price tag of over £200 although that machine is actually a fair bit less powerful at 250W.
Had mine with 12 Months, it has worked great. Put a better blade on it and its awesome. I have a few Aldi tools and generally they are fine.

Hi. A new subscriber here. Thank you so much for this video. You cannot really fault Aldi and Lidle tools, they work very well, and after a good bashing, you don't mind replacing them. I hope your video helps remove some of the snobbery out there! Can I also add, my expensive big Record band saw is in self destruct mode while still under warranty...I think that says it all!

Axminster do their own version of this band saw. It has a cast iron table and a few bells and whistles here and there. Obviously it cost a bit more, but it is fantastic value for money and the quality of cut you can get from it is surprising. I would say too anybody who does a bit of woodwork and is stuck for space in their shed/workshop "do not hesitate to get one of these band saw's". From Lidl or Axminster, which ever suits your budget, they are a good investment.

That three wheeler looks a bit like my dewalt dw100. Took a lot of fiddling to get it to cut good, but it still wont cut straight.
I need a better bandsaw but also a bit bigger to cut bowl blanks and maybe bandsaw boxes. Thanks for the review!

I love my Bandsaw: it's pretty big 300mm throat, can easily cut 8"deep material, it's a Record BS300. I use mine probably more than anything except my Router.
Bandsaws are the safest, (if there is such a thing) Powered cutting took there is. I like how the force from the blade is directed downwards towards the table, effectively pinning the work piece down! No chance of kickback or splintering shards being launched towards soft body parts! I bought the biggest I could afford at the time, because Alan Holtham, said so, which should be a good enough reason for anyone, surely? If you've bought a Bandsaw and are new to setting them up, I thoroughly recommend going over and having a look at his videos!

I got the Aldi one .had a bit of trouble with the blade coming off and not cutting straight .bit of trial and error and I traced the problem back to me not having any idea what I'm doing 😃

martin beardmore I've just bought a table saw for £89.99 that’s £159.99 from Screwfix as far as I can tell. In SF's defence I did buy a Trojan brad nailer from there cheaper than I could find it online. I only found out this week Aldi has an online presence for home delivery, next day delivery being kept informed of delivery times for an extra £3.95. I have some disabilities and this service is extremely useful to me and well worth the money.
I've had mine 50 yrs, and it still runs great. Can't do without it.

Was already a big fan of workzone power tools but had been apprehensive about buying machinery. Very new to woodwork and turning so not really sure what im doing most of the time - winging it! Terrific value for money and ideal for people like myself (beginner on a low budget); is taking the battering an inexperienced woodworker dishes out.
Altho not essential, i purchased additional blades for cutting hardwood blanks for turning. One of my best purchases to date!

Hi Marco. Just be aware that there seem to be a few quality issues with the current model - this video is from 2 years ago just FYI - so if you hit any snags setting it up, esp. the bottom wheel, just chuck it back to Aldi for exchange. 👍

Peter Millard hahaha...I didn't peter. In the end, I bought a Ryobi jigsaw in homebase for €60. Even then I had that inner philosophical battle between a €30 black & decker or €100 Makita jigsaw.
Ive been just learning woodworking from guys like yourself & I really enjoy it; Making small tables, garden bench to recently making a folding door which was a challenge & a half. But if like to start doing more things & improving. Plus for €100, it will always come in handy.

Peter Millard im still a bit sketchy about aldi & lidl tools. That old saying "buy cheap, buy twice" but recently I bought a parkside brad nailer for €22. Fantastic! & I saw a guy the other putting up architraving the other day using a nail gun with a compressor & some of the tip of the nail where sticking out. So I think for the homegamers, with aldi & lidl tools they seem money worth spent.
That bandsaw looks a lot like my Ryobi BS-230. The Ryobi does however have an aluminium table, with a mitre slot. It also came with a mitre. You could stick a sheet of sandpaper to the top of the sled that you made, to prevent the workpiece from sliding around with the fence screwed at the one end to create a swivel.

Actually, I got 2 bandsaws, a Scheppach Basato 3 and a "16 Sip with 3 hp. Wouldn't know what to do whitout it.

I had an early eighties burgess three wheeler when I was making toys for craft shows in the spare bedroom of my first house. The most useful thing about it was that you could buy 1/4 inch sanding belts for it; great for getting into tight curves and corners. I even cut one down to 3mm wide and it worked great.

Thanks! Yes, nails and staples are a common size (I’m using cheap Silverline ones just now) batteries and charger are widely available on e.g. eBay, though I’ve seen deals on offer where you can get a drill/driver with batts and charger for almost the same price, so worth shopping around. 👍
