- So way back in video #149 I mentioned that I’d bought a third-party #BandsawFenceUpgrade for my #TitanBandsaw… and here we are, a little over a year later, it’s probably about time I fitted it. Ah, what the heck, let’s splash out on a new #BandsawBlade too, while we’re at it. Enjoy!

Seeing how the whole band saw wobbled around when you were working on ot, I would suggest adding a large square plywood base that prevents the whole saw tipping over. You can then clamp the base to the workbench to have a solid installation

They come with an outrigger support that slots into the rear of the unit. Not shown here.
@@RustyVanDoor I have one of these. I found use of the rear outrigger makes a huge difference. I'm definitely going to change the fence as Peter has done.

What a fantastic video.. I too have a Titan bandsaw.. and i too purchased the Axminster fence upgrade.. finding this was absolutely awesome.. thank you. AS an FYI re the Titan bandsaw tensioner.. the top wheel does come out giving access to that back bit of bracketry. Simply lift the wheel up and pull the bottom out.. the whole thing slides out. You have a nice little setup and so ive started following you. I'm disabled and make toys from scrap wood.. look forward to seeing future videos from you. Thanks again :)

I must admit the original fence is really annoying and although I managed to tune it so that it would lock much better, it still needed clamping.
That's why, after watching this video I bought the Axminster fence and installed it according to your instructions. It works perfectly - what an improvement!!

Your review persuaded me to buy the Titan bandsaw and I have not been disappointed. Your comments about the fence are so true. I was considering a new fence and then I saw a RUclips video on how to tweak the Titan bandsaw fence by grinding down two rasied bits on the fence, it worked perfectly, only a suggestion without disparaging your comments or idea. Your videos are great.

If, instead of drilling two holes in the rail you had extended one or both into slots, you could then adjust the fence for drift simply by loosening the knobs or wing nuts holding the rail, setting the fence accurately then tightening the nuts. Far quicker than taking the fence end off and fiddling around inside with four screws. The De Walt DW100 used exactly this arrangement as standard. The only difference is that it has three, rather than two, bolts.

Good series! Always useful information on your channel. I have a cheap bandsaw (WEN) that came with a pretty good fence, so I'm lucky there. I've been meaning to get a better and wider blade for it. So, this will be the month I do that. Then I can see how well it will work to cut some wide edge banding to veneer a cabinet makeover.

"Thinner than you're ever likely to cut..." - I spent half of last year making furniture out of big panels of MDF, and used the bandsaw quite frequently... for cutting shims to space out the boxes of a built-in wardrobe against an uneven wall. I know you can get plastic packers, but this let me do some weird wedge and concave shapes pretty easily.
I’ve done that myself, but used a tracksaw. I’m guessing that yours weren’t 0.6mm thick, which is what I was cutting and referring to here 👍👍
Took mine back day after impossible to set up , maybe it would have worked with these Mods .also what put me off was the cheap plastic bearing guides good vid thanks

Hi Peter. It's a fundamental of setting up a bandsaw fence that it isn't likely to be at 90 degrees to the table. Blades have individual ways of cutting (because of the way they are sitting on the wheel, the wear in their tooth set, internal tensions, and so on), which mean it is unlikely that they will cut at the angle you think. As an experiment, take the fence away, and mark a line on a scrap board parallel to a long edge. Take this board and cut the line freehand on the saw as accurately as you can. When you have cut half-way along the board, carefully stop the machine without changing the orientation of the board, and mark onto the table the line of the edge of the board. It is this line (which is unlikely to be 90 degrees from the edge of the table) which is the line your fence should be set to.....and it should be checked periodically as you blade gets blunter.
Be careful when fumbling those nuts. 😂 nice video

Peter, I think you need to adjust the orange knob on the top of the bandsaw as well as the lever on the back to alter the blade tension.
Thanks. The knob at the top is to tension the blade, the lever at the back is a (supposedly) quick-release de-tensioner to make blade changes easier. Doesn’t really work on this one unfortunately, but doesn’t bother me too much as I rarely change blades. 😂👍

Hi Peter, I have one of those 10" saw benches that came with a horrible fence arrangement. I think that I could replace it with this unit you have shown in your video. it would need a bit of adaptation but think I'll give it a try. Thanks as always for showing us your work.

Thanks Peter I think you might need a Bandsaw Buddy from Axminster, went to a bandsaw morning at Axminster Tools and they said the blade can dictate the set up of the fence as it may be out due to how it runs on the wheels and there can be a float of the blade. Great video and shows that for a small outlay how as tool can be improved 😀👍

@@10MinuteWorkshop A couple of magnets and a straight steel ruler (a magnetic one) does the same job. I have a number of small rare earth magnets that did the job nicely. My fence needed realigning after a visit to the floor!
@@10MinuteWorkshop The cheaper and easier approach to buying fancy Axminster machined aluminium is:
- Draw a line on a bit of plywood parallel with a known-straight edge of that plywood, 4cm or so in from the edge.
- Cut freehand along that line as close and as straight as you can manage
- Stop halfway through the cut so the plywood spans the table
- Clamp it down without moving it
- Align the fence to the outside edge of the plywood.
The theory is that due to a number of factors (where the blade sits on the wheel, twist in the frame, misalignment of the table, wheel alignment, etc.) it might be that the blade doesn't naturally cut completely orthogonal to the table edge, so if you use the fence for making parallel cuts you'll sometimes find that the blade pulls to one side and cuts you wedges instead. I know I have to do this with my bandsaw (same fence!), but that may also be because I got it second hand with no table (?!) and had to make a replacement out of some thick birch ply, so I have no idea how well-aligned my table's front edge is anyway...!
Thanks for the upload. I have just purchased my first bandsaw (Lumberjack BS228) and it has the same issue with the blade tension lever. I was wondering about releasing the tension for times between use as it can cause flat spots on the rubbers If left long periods under tension. Now I will try the packer solution you used. The fence is good though. Keep up the good work and thanks again.

Thanks for this, Peter. Chasing the moths out of the wallet as I type this. What’s the deflection like at the far end of the fence? Also, any chance of an episode on clamping; i.e. ‘cheap clamp vs Bessey’, and which type works best for a given job. So many ‘clamp shaped objects’ out there that don’t perform, but also some really great ones that work brilliantly.
Thanks! I’ve pondered doing something about clamps, but to be perfectly honest, I just don’t ‘get’ expensive clamps. 🤷♂️ I’d rather have more cheaper clamps than a couple of pricey ones. Maybe I need to use some expensive one to see the difference, but at ~£60/clamp that’s not likely to happen. 🤔

I've managed to 'fix' the Titans fence, took all of 15-20 minutes, it now locks solid no wobble or twist when locked down. I'm still shocked Titan hasn't corrected this obvious defect themselves, but hey hum.

Have the Titan bandsaw and was interested to see your videos on the upgrade, like you I use it mainly for freehand work which I am happy with the performance so used. Might invest in another blade if not the superior fence, the original supplied fence, is as you say, pretty hopeless.
Yeah, I’m not sure how much I’ll use the fence, other than as an end stop for trimming eg dowels. But a good exercise - and I had the fence already 😆👍

The squaring up seemed superfluous to me, surely the fence really just needs to be parallel with the blade ?

Thanks! The blades pretty damn square to the slot, so it was really just a question of squaring up the fence. There’s the ‘bandsaw buddy’ kind of thing if you want to get super-keen about it, but I’m not fussed for the kind of work I do.👍👍

I jave had a sense that Axminster prices have been going up very sharply over the last year or so. Can't really blame exchange rates as the pound has been pretty 'flat' over the last 12 months. With all the retail failures in recent yimes I am beginning to wonder whether they are struggljng to make ends meet 🤔

Thanks! No, I’ve never tried it with anything other than stock blades, I’m sorry. I just use mine for small, fiddly little cuts, mostly. 👍👍
I was thinking of getting another Administer rip fence and adding a longer aluminium fence to the slide for a bench saw if possible has anyone else tried it ?
Could you add two additional bolts to the fence and then cut it to allow for easier blade changes?
If you wanted, yes, but I’d rather have a single continuous rail that the fence attaches to, personally. 👍
The fence attachment rail, on the Axminster saw that I have, has slots for the bolts - 4 of them - all it needs is a half turn of the "wing bolts" and it slips off easily. The bolts are threaded into the cast iron table. The manual states that the continuous mounting rail helps keep the table flat.
P.S. You can make the holes into slots, using the band saw. I made an extra slot so that I could off set the support rail and set the fence off the edge of the table so I could cut a series of parts that were just that little bit too wide.

Thank you Peter. I also have a Titan bandsaw and I was actually wondering lately if you had managed to fix the tension release lever. Great timing! This rip fence upgrade is fantastic. Thanks for these two tips to improve this bandsaw.
I am wondering if you have any suggestion or any videos on a rip fence upgrade for cheap table saws, like the Lidl Parkside Table saw (in Northern Ireland we don't have Aldi). The fence is terrible. When you apply a minimum pressure the far side of the fence moves. I know you have the track saw system that works very well, but I was wondering if you have any tip on how to upgrade cheap table saw fences too. I usually need to clamp the far side of the fence to make sure it stays put, but it's not ideal, as I always have to check for the blade alignment before I do any cut, and the accuracy is far from good.
Cheers Alberto! No, sorry, I’ve never had the pleasure of a Lidl table saw, or needed to upgrade a fence on one. Lots of supplementary fences on Axminster though, and lots of RUclips videos about making your own. 👍👍

Great Video, I have the same saw, i've read numerous comments regarding the manual printing the wrong measurements for the saw blade. Can I ask what size blade did you order?

Cheers Peter I also have this bandsaw and I just use it for cutting out shapes. Did you find the saw blade size not to the specified measurements in the manual? I orderd a new blade from Axminster and it didn't fit so had to ask screwfix for their recommendation. A few others online seem to have the same issue but not on all the saws. Thanks! I’ve had a few people say that the blade size is off, but I bought a standard blade for the replacement and while it seemed a bit loose initially, it’s tensioned fine and cuts well. A couple of people have mentioned that the issues I have with the de-tensioner may be because the blade has had to be tensioned too much to take up the slack, so I may try one a little smaller next time👍👍
A clamps are the greatest accessory know to man. Are you like myself and yours have at least a dual purpose and are equally at home in your workshop and when you are setting up a photographic studio?
Although as I said yesterday my Titan fence is solid, I haven’t checked it for squareness. Nor have I checked what thickness of wood I can get neither. I’m not sure the thickness is of any importance yet, but the squareness is. This is the sort of thing I'm still missing checking in my newbieness. (A word I seem to have invented, but it will be in the 2020 OED).
This is an incredibly useful video, as the first thing I'll do next time I go into my shop is check all my fences. I don't understand the two thumbs down, as it was an excellently presented video, with great information about what and how. It is exactly what it says in the title, and it’s perfect for newbies like myself or, I presume, more advanced woodworkers who are thinking of making their saw more precise. Thank you.

Thanks for this series of videos Peter, it helped me decide on my first bandsaw. I went for the Rutland one in the end which has bearing guides, a worklight and the mitre guage.
After setting up I've been very pleased with it's performance. I have just this week upgraded it with the Axminster fence, which in my case was an easy fit as the table has two M6 threaded holes in the base. Just waiting for a new blade to arrive from TuffSaws now 😄. All the best, Bill.

Peter do you think it's possible to make a bench saw rip fence from an Axmister rip fence by adding a longer aluminium fence please give me your expert opinion ? 👍
Not much of a bench saw user tbh, but I wouldn’t have thought the mechanism in this fence is robust enough to use on a bench saw. 🤷♂️👍
What happens to the fence bracket when you want to change the blade? I guess you will have to take it off

Right, having watched video 1 as it were, took the plunge and bought the Titan. I expected from your review the two issues you’re remedying here. I have to say that’s not the case, in the original video I can see that the fence is wobbly, but did you actually tension the the screw on the lock at the front? Mines as tight as a ducks behind. Also my tensioner works a treat, it starts to engage at around 10 o’clock when viewed from the rear. If you loosen the Allen head in the cam can you rotate the working action of the cam?
Glad to hear yours is working well. I had the Titan bandsaw for over a year before I made this video and did these fixes; I think the current models don’t display the issues - and yes, I tensioned the fence, and no, there’s no adjustment on the quick-release tensioner, unfortunately. 👍👍

well done sir, but... how about replacing blade? With this fix, you need to dissassembly fence each time.

Ever since I met up with the guys at Ooznest in the week - did my first bit of tapping aluminium extrusion since I was 16, and now I'm hooked! 😂😂👍👍
I was actally a bit disappointed that you used a bolt and didn't tap the hole in the fence. But then I thought by the time you had got the tap out the fence would be bolted in place and ready to go ;)
I’d have to buy the tap to start with, so bolting it on was waaaay faster 😂👍👍

When resawing (for narrow strips) I'd like to have the upper blade alignment as low as possible. But it's not possible to go lower than 30 mm or so, because
the fence is in the way. Does anybody know if there are lower fences as well?
The Scheppach has a pressed steel table so you’d need to pack it out with ply or MDF but I’m sure it’d work OK 👍👍
I’ve installed one on my Aldi unit which if effectively the same. It fits perfectly without any packing (though it would add to the strength). Works like a champ.

I did the same with the table of my drill press where I was not able to clamp clamps to.
I controlled the standard fence and it seems rather straight. But the height is even (much) more than I thought: 53 mm!!
Which is far too much for most stock. Max. height of wood 80 mm.
You can clamp a lower (height) auxiliary fence to your main fence. Pin a strip that clears your top guide to a thinner backing board of mdf/ply and clamp the backing board to your existing fence.

Thanks for the video Peter. One thing I have an issue with on my Titan is the plastic housing holding the blade guide moves from side to side when I cut wood, especially with rip cuts. Yours doesn’t seem to do this as you can do a really accurate cut on the video. Just wondered if you have any comments, would be much appreciated. I need to do your fence mod at some point. Thanks in advance, Nick
Hi Nick. No, mine’s pretty solid; is yours a recent machine? Just wondering as mine’s a couple of years old now, and it could be a QC issue - not unknown on the entry-level saws 🤷♂️ Fence upgrade is well worth it though! 👍👍
Thanks For the reply Peter. It’s just over a year old. I’ve got the blade tension quite tight. I’ll have another look, maybe if I tighten the screws holding it to the metal case. I contacted SF and they aren’t that helpful.may see if I can fix it or return it! Cheers. Love the videos.

Why should the consumer have to constantly redo work on equipmemt they have bought with their hard earned money! Seems to be the same story with so many products in the UK now.
While I agree with the sentiment, as I say in the video, I ran this bandsaw straight out of the box for 18 months without any real issues; the work I did in these videos just made it better. 👍
@@10MinuteWorkshop We are Lucky to have those in 'the game' like yourself to show us. Sadly, Each time I (for example) chose a bandsaw, I watch a review on YT and get put off lol. Is there nothing decent under £1k!
Hindsight has shown that you kept the wrong bandsaw out of the 3 I believe. You've had a poor quality fence all this time, I understand that you don't use it much but it was unlikely to be the only poor quality component on the Titan, you end up actually buying an Axminster fence! Obviously, one would have been included on their machine, negating the need to buy a replacement, not to mention the buggering about with putting 15mm wedges and 1mm packing pieces into place with epoxy resin! Bloody hell Peter, you should have just chucked it and got a decent Axminster as soon as you realised that the Titan is clag.
P.S. has anyone an idea on what the widest blade is you can fit on the Triton?
