  • So it’s been a long time coming and lots of people have asked about it, but I’ve finally got the place mostly empty and mostly clean, so here’s the ‘shop tour; I dunno, 10-minute workshop, but a 20-odd minute tour - how does that work? Enjoy!

Hey Peter, your shop is an inspiration. I've had a few shops over the years, different shapes and sizes. I'm not self employed anymore so I rarely take on outside jobs for people. I have about a 27' x 10' garage but it's less than 8' high ( very frustrating) sheet wise 🙄 anyway, be grateful for what we have eh?! Any space is better than no space! I agree with the one comment about the US RUclips videos about endless space and budgets. They can come across as very intimidating for anyone starting up a shop. Thanks for keeping it real and the no BS English approach 😉💪🏻❤️🇬🇧🇨🇦

Great point Nigel. Not everyone in the USA can have a mega-shop; in my case, I live in a very urban area and any kind of space is extremely expensive on a per-square-foot (or meter) basis, whether it’s green space or constructed space.
Vids, such as this one, drive home the point that the single most impactful tool in the shop is the workshop itself. It is also easily the most expensive tool in a non-industrial context, so it pays huge dividends later to make sure the shop is well conceived and well built prior to adding in the other tools. Incidentally, a gigantic shop is not always a good thing, but an efficient shop that is the “smallest acceptable” shop for a given type of work will likely be more productive than the big trophy shops. An important strategic step is to understand that storage and execution are different needs, and generally speaking , the storage should be selected/built to a lower threshold and budget than the work space(s). This is what Peter has done and it works, because it is an efficient use of his space at an affordable cost. Okay, my architect’s hat is now off.

I have an 8' x 12' garden shed for a home workshop. Over the years I have accumulated a small mitre/drop saw. a table saw , a router table, a pillar drill and a band saw. They are all moveable, on castors, They share the space with two workbenches and an alcove of steel shelving on which enough paint to do the London Bridge is stored, along with the necessary accessories. My battery operated drills , clamps and other hand and power tools are ranged on hanging shelves. A shopvac is hidden under one of the benches and there is still room to hide the lawn mower Like you I have about 4' x 6' within which to stand and work. I'm very happy with the setup

You can make anything work. I just can't use anything other than hand tools... But with track saws and whatnot, that's not really a problem. The local shop sells both 1200mm and 2400mm sheets of mdf/plywood... So I buy a lot of 1200mm :P

Once I shared a 5,000 square foot (1,524 meters) shop with another woodworker. We had very little money at the time to buy tools. I remember it was funny, one day a cabinet door salesman came to our shop and looked around and said "where's the shop?" as I guess he didn't really see what few tools we had. Now I work out of my basement and while it's still way too small, I do seem to have a better balance of space to tools now. Thanks for the video of your shop. Love the way you store your router bits.

Hi Peter, I've been watching and enjoying your videos for some time and stumbled upon this shop tour. Really nice to see a real working shop instead of some of the fancy "for youtube only" shops you see with other creators, mainly filled with sponsored tools looking as new as when they came out of the box. Can't say that about your area of drills and routers.- :-) This video also lead me to your website which initiated this comment. Just wanted to say how honest and straight forward your website and your communication there comes through. Fits 100% with the impression I got from your videos. Thank you for all the time you put into your videos and for sharing your craft. Gave a great day.

The thing about an open-ended video like this is that you can never tell what a viewer will take away with them.. I learned lots of stuff - like things don't have to be perfect to be functional, make a lot out of a little, you've also got bike-rash, dust extraction is a must in a small space. Thanks for making the effort. Ian

Hi Peter, I know it's been a while since you made this video and things have probably changed a bit but I am just trying to plan out a small workshop in a spare bedroom as unfortunately that's all I've got, for some reason I hadn't caught up with this vid until now. It's given me a few good ideas to save space, particularly the fold up leaf extending your bench. It's really good that you don't have to spend your day commuting across London. I'm envious of your setup despite it being small.

Funny you mention the dewalt powershop radial arm saw... I just got a free Delta RAS last week, made in about 1963, from a retiring woodworker. Radial arm saws are a dime a dozen here in Canada, but this double arm Delta is not as common. It is a rock solid saw but it takes some care to use that’s for sure. A commercial shop bought all his tools except the RAS which they wouldn’t touch! Anyway...I’ve wanted to try one for doing dados, but the cross cutting is limited to about 15”. Good for bookshelf’s made of pine, or melamine chip board but maybe not kitchen cabinets. The Makita track, with a router sled might be more useful after all, or.. what I see you doing is butt joints using the Festool domino, which done right avoids the rabbet/dado altogether. Lots of options, without needing a huge cabinet saw!

    • @10MinuteWorkshop
      @10MinuteWorkshop  3 года назад +1

Nice! If you have the space for them then they’re a good option to have for cross cutting/dados, but they’re machines conceived well before things like dust extraction were a consideration, and they do need careful setting up. 👍👍

Your workshop is one of the best organised I have seen for working in limited space. I am definitely going to be cashing in on some of your ideas. I like the idea of the worktop that converts into a router table and the removable top is also a good idea. For years I have used a table saw but I am going to be making a lot of base units in the future and I think an MFT table would make sense for getting accurate consistent square cuts. These are some of the things I like.

The one item that impresses me the most is how you have optimized the table space. Right now I have 3 different heights of tables/saws/homemade MFT/benches. This is a function of moving too much between houses/garages/workshops. In this rather small space you can cut up most anything that one can buy. From 4x8 sheet goods to 12 ft. long boards. Everything is right at hand, no wasted movements. In a 3000 sq. ft. shop, it appears to me that one does a LOT of walking around to get stuff in one place enough to actually do something. You just turn around, grab a tool, and do whatever it is you have to do. Also you have a lot more wall space than I do. This is incredibly important. Without it, one does have to store items in cabinets. I am sure a few more square feet wouldn't hurt, but you probably have the most efficient woodworking shop in London for what your business is. AND it across the street from where you live!!!

Thanks! Yes, I actually had this conversation what seems like a lifetime ago now at the hardwood offcuts shop - an amazing space, but a long way between machines! And yes, I’d love a few more sq feet, but making the best of what you have is a good start!👍👍

I am retired and have 2 basic hobbies, woodwork and golf: I'm average at both. Was really interested to see the installation of your hinged track in particular how it is setup for different thicknesses and how you use it but it was one item that you missed out. Really enjoy your videos. Thanks

+Rob Bristow Thanks! I didn't dwell on it as it's an absolutely standard feature of the Festool MFT - the hinged rail, the adjustable height, all that. I do have a few ideas I'm working on, so 'stay tuned' 👍

Hi Peter. Thanks for the tour. I'm new to your channel, so there are a few things I haven't worked out yet - like what most of the work you undertake consists of! You don't appear to have any large machines - no surfacing, no thicknessing, no spindle moulding, not much ripping capacity etc. I'm currently working on some porch furniture for a customer, and I've designed it in a modular fashion so that none of the cabinets are too large for my workshop (a double garage) or for me to handle on my own. Even so, I can't imagine how I would manage in the space you have available. Clearly, I will have to continue exploring your very enjoyable videos!
I really hope your RUclips career doesn't lead to less and less woodworking on your part! Cabinet-making is what gives my worklife meaning, and I abandoned a career in the Legal profession to take it up. I fear that too many RUclips 'woodies' fall by the wayside once they achieve a degree of success, and I only hope it doesn't happen to you.
Looking forward to the rest of your clips!

Thanks! I've published almost 400 videos since this one, so there's plenty to catch up on, but I've been full-time on youtube for the last year, and while there's a lot less client work, there's still plenty to be getting on with. As for the kind of work I did, it was 99% sheet goods for fitted furniture, so no need for any 'big iron' machines. 👍

Great video Peter as always. Inspiring to see that creativity can take you a long way when space is in demand but not necessarily forthcoming!
One of the bits I enjoyed the most was the bench recess for the pillar drill and other tools you use in there.
You don’t see many RUclipsrs with that setup!!!

Thanks Clayton! No, the bench recess isn’t something I’ve seen elsewhere - simple idea, really, to bring the tables in line with the bench-tops 🤔👍👍

gonna build a workshop at the bottom of my garden to compliment my tiny 17x10 garage shop. it should be about the same size as your shop 24x15. it's gonna be a fresh build incorporating built-in rail tracks to slide a planer, a thicknesser, and table saw underneath same height work benches in order to make full use of the space. gonna devide the build with a wall with sliding door and do the dustiest work like sanding and routing in there. Took some great ideas from this video Peter. Thanks for uploading this.

it's crazy, i have the same floor space (5x6 meters) except i don't have the wall in the middle, and i can't get to have something so organized and so well thought ! Well, in my defense my walls consist of one side plaster, one side uneven rocks where you brake absolutely EVERY bit you try to drill with, and two metal shelves, and a magnificient floor made out of holes because it was just a concrecete slab poured into dirt 60 years ago , terrible condition to build anything flat!
But your shop is very inspiring , at first i thought it was too tiny and clogged up, but everything is actually very organized, i can see how you have everything on hand and it would make working there a breeze ! Also i'm glad to see someone else with Trend Routers :D ! i Have two of them and i'm so pleased with it , especially the T11e , that thing is under a table and it would eat a whole tree without a hastle !

Recently started binge watching your videos because your channel kept popping up on things that I wanted to learn more about. I appreciate your direct communication style about what you are doing and why. I am impressed with the efficiency and effectiveness it appears you have built into such a compact workshop.
I believe most of your worktops are mdf, but they appear to be painted or laminated based on beinga dark color (black?). Are they coated and what are they coated with?
One significant difference noted between your setup and many others I have been watching is your lack of a large table saw and your statement it doesn't get used much. Most people have claimed that the table saw is the heart of the work flow and shop, the other is your lack of a dedicated router table. With that said you appear to be able to do most of what others do, but then again milling of lumber was not discussed. After thinking back, the videos I have watched is pretty much focused on cabinetry with dimensioned lumber and mostly mdf. Maybe that is the big difference, knowing what you really want your shop to do - if not building big table projects and using lumber needing to be milled the not much need for planers, jointers, and large table saws. Overall very impressive.
I am not sure my opinions above make much of a difference, but if I understand correctly, likes and comments help you with your RUclips channel. So, wanted to make a comment and if going to do that thought I would communicate what i was thinking as I watched your video. I look forward to more insights as I watch more of your videos. I am subscribed. Once again, well done and keep the information flowing --- thank you.

Hi Rob, and thanks so much for taking the time to share your thoughts. Yes, I mostly make fitted furniture - built-ins - so the workshop is very much geared towards working with sheet goods, around 96% of projects being painted, 3% baltic birch, and ~1% veneered or solid. If I need solid timber machined to size I have a couple of good yards locally who will do that, but as the percentages suggest, it's not something I need often! Thanks again, and best wishes, Peter.👍

I'm a cabinet maker been over 44 years in the trade. My commute to work daily is even faster than yours. I simply walk down stairs to my large workshop where the whole down stairs is commited to a wood work machine shop. No more EXSPENSIVE rents or traveling costs plus the waste of time getting to and from work. Over 25 years I've lived above my workshop with many benefits saving a fortune.

Thanks for the tour Peter. I think having a storage space to hold timber and paints is the way to go when you're working in a small space. I ended up taking out a wall to increase the space but I think I lost storage space (but it is easier to move around). Also having similar bench heights as your table saw helps. One thing I need to get around to one day ;)

At last, a woodwork channel from Blighty. As good as the many U.S. ones are, telling me how much it costs in Lowes or Home Depot doesn't cut it. (Pun intended) Screwfix and Toolstation, now those I understand. I was a chippy in a past life now turned First Aid instructor, but Covid has buggered that up. I even started a first aid RUclips channel. BUT... Now I'm looking to go back into sawdust manufacture in a car port that I'm planning on turning into a workshop. Might even put that on RUclips, who knows, be rude not to.

Systainers are so handy I'm always finding good uses for them. Had to fit a big double oven this week on a kitchen I'm doing and thought how the hell am I gonna lift that on my own. I used two sys carts and a few systainers and slid the oven from one stack to the other adding a systainer each time until it was high enough the roll up and slide into place.
