As a cabinet maker, after getting my Festool ct26 and making all my tools hook up to it, I will never be able to work with out it. I work beside people who don't have dust extraction and it makes you realise how good it really is having dust extraction. Also for the "throwaway" festool bags I made my own version of the lifetime bag clip from two different sizes of water pipe that slide over each other, I cut the bag open empty it and seal it up with my diy clip and I use a bag for around a year before throwing it out.

  • @lukenfoci

Well, let me tell you this, as a customer :). I had some cabinetry fitted about three years ago. I only finished painting the room, and fitters came to get my cabinetry sorted. All morning they worked without extraction vacuum. I offered them my small Karcher but they pointed out that they have extraction with them. I thought it is strange not to use extraction, especially as they were cutting Corian worktops but it is their health... However once they left I got massively upset. My freshly painted walls were all covered in the dust. And this was especially visible on my dark navy blue feature wall. It cost me 4 hours of vacuuming walls from the dust plus I gathered it is better not to breath in this shite. Extraction protects you and environment you work in. It is a good idea to use it :).

Great work as always but I would have to say the faster way of making these rebates is just to get the right router bit. You can get 25mm bit with a 12mm bearing on it so that when you run it along an edge it will overcut by 13mm instead of doing a flush cut. Very convenient way of doing this. I use one for doing rebates from time to time.

I got the Festool cyclone trap / pre-filter. (Should work on your model, also on Makita’s vacuum systems with the systainer clamps on top) It’s Festool so it’s arguably overpriced for what it is, but at the same time it saves me money on bags. Especially if you have a lot of router work. You still need to replace the bags once in a while. Not because they are full but because the ultra-fine dust leaves a coating on the inside, clogging up the airflow.

hi Scott ,small tip its much faster to do those "rabits" on your table saw ...2 small cuts and youre done ,advantyage is youre not changing all that wood in dust ,i always set up 1 cut run all my board thet set other cut run all again...(its realy easy on those dewalts ....mine is same as yours but run on batteries...)
i tried with router ....even with spiral bit take longer than table saw
    best regards

    • @BDJappe

marek mroz I think for the board He’s installing @9:45 , you’re gonna want to use a router..
For me, my garage sealing is low, so that limits me. Can’t put bigger boards vertically on the tablesaw.
However, in an better situation, you have a very good point my friend. I would do it just because I hate the noise my router makes :)

Hey Scott, Makita makes a router plate for their tracksaw rail that should also work on Festool track. Also do yourself a favor and buy a cyclone dust separator. They make one that fits your Festool vacuum (watch out for static build up with Festool ), There are many companies making models from units that you put on top of a 5 gallon bucket ($50), to Onieda (great systems) starting at around $100-$150. I was amazed at how much dust they captured and how little dust made it to the vacuum's bag.

  • @300leothelion

I’ve got the same festool vac. My chest feels a lot better and lot less cleaning up. I took the small hoover attachment and glued it to the sawdust exhaust port of my hitachi mitre chop saw. Now I’m using the vac on a daily basis. It’s the way forward buddy. Love from wales 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

  • @VC-Toronto
    @VC-Toronto 5 лет назад

To extend the life of your vacuum filter, consider using a cyclone separator between the vacuum and the tool. I've found that it will divert over 95% of any wood dust, and about 90% of drywall dust.
"Dust Deputy" makes a version, and Home Depot (US) has a version that fits on a 5 gallon bucket, called the Dustopper. Likely pay for itself in the cost of Festool filter bags alone. Not sure what is available in your area.

Dust extractors are where it's at. I even have a shroud that lets me hand sand with collection. Festool plastic is too delicate for tools of that price, in my opinion. It's my only complaint about the brand, and it's kept me from buying anything of theirs- as great as they work.
edit: Not to mention the time my boss told me to just put a bag on the sander, while I was setting up the extractor. It set the fire alarm off, which was tied into their home security system. Good times. Always extract.

Nevyn interesting how it works. Somehow they ( manufacturers) work together.
As you know metabo and hikoki have amalgamated. The metabo cordless planer is the same as the hikoki and previous hitachi cordless planer.
Ramset jackhammer is also a carbon copy of Bosch or vice versa.

One thing I had a festool and they don't lose much suction when the filters get clogged with fine dust. Gyprock sanding.

I don't think I've ever seen dust extraction on a drop saw on a job site, ever. only ever in people's workshops.

If u keep at it you will. As a seasoned carpenter it worth. Throwing dust thru a 100 year old house while clients are home isn’t good. Charge more and protect your lungs and ears. Less tedious cleanup.

The green pressure treated timber doesn't have Arsenik in it anymore. It, unsurprisingly, was deemed too toxic to humans and the environment so they banned that and now they contain some sort of copper-salt instead. It's not as good to protect against long exposure to moisture though it does not leek Arsenik into the ground etc. This is at least the case in Europe. I can't say if it's the same globally.

    • @ScottBrownCarpentry

Wish we went in that direction. Our timber still has arsenic it it. They actually record higher levels of arsenic in the air during winter, from people burning the timber off cuts in their fires at home

I remember working on building sites in the mid/late 1980s in the UK and back then H&S was just started to be taken seriously due to the 1,000s of people that where getting killed on building sites etc and now day what happened back then would never be allowed today and today sites are a total different experience

The same thing had happen to me, under the risk of being thrown out of site I had to buy one.
A slightly bigger than yours Festool CTM 26, it cost me a lot of money, but I don't regret it one bit..... bigger challenge was to find rubber adapters for every different type of tool....

This is interesting, in the US we don’t use nearly as much treated lumber in building, and CCA treatment is banned. Only outdoor structures and ground contact timber is copper azole treated in residential construction. We also don’t believe in dust extraction for the most part so 🤷🏻‍♂️

I've been using M-class HEPA extraction on absolutely everything for years. Such a shame that my DeWalt DWS780 and Makita LS0714 1st and 2nd-fix mitre saws ignore the megabucks vacuums and spew dust out anyway. The only mitre saw I've ever seen which extracts properly is the Kapex, but I tried it and hated it.

  • @Kewonerdk

Dust extraction is a must. In Denmark you HAVE to use a vacuum cleaner, and sweeping inside is strictly forbidden, because it spread dust in to the air.

Ryobi 30L Vacuum for $180 from Bunnings will do exactly the same as a Festool for fraction of the price. Wet and dry as well with 240 take off. Mine sucks up brick and Gyprock dust and is normally attached to wall chasers. It has only just died after 5 years of use. Grab one mate for a second vacuum for cleaning up. Keep your Festool attached to your tools and don't be too proud not to buy a cheap Ryobi 🤔

It’s not just for your safety, but also the families that have to live in the homes that you work in. Not using dust extraction generates a cloud that spread through the house- settling on walls, rugs, fabrics and other surfaces. Some of those chemicals have the greatest long term health effects on children.

I know what you mean about the safety inspector Scott. I was working doing ducting cutting metal, needed to trim the end just a quick cut so didn’t bother putting gloves on and I had the same sort of things safety inspector can in just then and said you do that again you won’t be allowed on site. It’s so stupid in the uk, people who work with tools all days don’t need to be told how to use them safely.

  • @ianlee9067

Are you using a marking gauge or cutting gauge to scribe the plywood. I tried both recently and found the cutting gauge produced a better cut across the grain. Just a thought.
