I use to get up early to do a paper round and always made sure i go to see her leave and come home. My Uncle was in the RM band based on her and i was so lucky he took me on a family day on board ship and went to sea, Best day on my life.
I wos onboard for that filming, the paint hid a lot of problems, some of the engineering spaces were comdemned, you had to phone through to your enine room before entering,andagain when you came out. If the Eagle hadn't of bent her prop shaft, Ark Royal would have been srapped years earlier, and no one would have made a fuss.
A quick view of my mate at Commanders table, we went though training together, always in trouble for being drunk, in the end it took his life, he died in a fire at HMS Sultan. Paddy Mclaughin was in my mess, 5Wz0, very quiet lad, but easily led, the story he told about a girlffiriend wasn't quite true.
What happened to the beginning of the episode ie Diamond Lil's and coming down the gangway drunk as lords hitting their heads on the ship, days I remember well, best days ever

10 quid an expensive run ashore. Those were the bloody days.
Ashore with £10.00, back aboard with 5 pence, few days lost of pay for fighting with the French Navy, good memories happy times.
In 1976 i was 16, and earned £11.50 a week.

+ Scrumpy is made in Navy country, I started drinking it at 17 when I joined, makes a man of you, Devonshire Scrumpy.
