We do in civil service and military- it’s just the path for politicians through all parties is less rigorous. Rory Stewart’s book is eye opening - especially the tories
@@user-mr4uo5mw9n Firstly, the RN doesn't have an issue with recruiting - in fact last year they had their best recruiting numbers in over 25 years. The problem for the RN is retention. Many will only do 4 years, leave, and take that experience with them into the private sector. Especially where someone has a specialist skill. Defence companies are very happy to take them. Secondly, as of August 2023, the RN has 32,360 active personnel 3,370 maritime reserve, 70 commissioned ships and over 160 aircraft.
@@stuartmcloughlin some people leave the services because there are few options for progression because the Navy is too small. If we had more ships there would be more opportunities and those people would have more options to stay in.
I have been hurting looking at the state of our armed forces for 10+ years but I am so happy to hear tough questions being answered. It’s music to my ears.
The good news is that the worst is upon us. The 2030s are going to be a good decade for the navy based off of current plans. And those are plans set while the world just _looks_ like it might get scary. If stuff does kick off then you can imagine the Type 83 and AUKUS programmes resulting in a very capable destroyer and hunter killer submarine fleet. That guarantees another good decade for the Royal Navy in the 2040s. The poor Army though. Unless we somehow end up putting boots on the ground in Asia they seem like they will funded by whatever we find down the back of the settee.

@@regarded9702I work in the aerospace sector, the amount of jobs right now in defence maritime engineering are probably double both of the jobs in defence aerospace and army related contracts. As the RAF is currently working on FCAS tempest, that’s provided a large boost to the sector, with uk companies basically leading the way. However the army doesn’t really have any big projects, even the challenger 3 project is at a much smaller scale than any of the other force’s projects.
"The Nation is short of Engineers" How true! But after a decline in industry and a general disrepect of Engineering as a career option, what could be expected?
The disrespect for engineers is everywhere in the UK. Its probably the main reason we lag other countries. All leading countries, America, Japan, Germany, France, Poland, Turkey, China, etc have proper schools and colleges even universities that push Engineers and Engineering forward. We've done the opposite, why even call a washing machine repair man an engineer!!!
@@johnchristmas7522 That would depend on how technically minded the Washing machine repairman was. If he could for example Dismantle a say 10 year old machine and rebuild it, maybe recondition the motor with new bearings etc. I'd say that he was a Washing machine engineer/technician.
The problem is we have to accept that not everyone is an academic and that some people are more hands on I.e on the tools. We need to change our education system to take this into account so that we have people that can actually build things when they come off the drawing board. Keep sending kids to College to study useless subjects and qualifications is pointless.

For the entire 1+ hours, they have been evading the questions and have been unable to give a clear answer to any question. The most obvious is at 57:17 when he says the RN is one of the few navies who’s been able to deploy an entire carrier strike group to the other side of the world, when in facts it never happened even once in the history of the RN. The first and furthest they’ve gone was in the 1980s to the south Atlantic and in modern days the QE carriers and Prince of whales have only been able to deploy to the other side of the Atlantic in a multi-country carrier strike group, and never deployed anywhere with an entirely British strike group. As opposed to the French CDG who deployed to the Med, the Indian Ocean, the Pacific Ocean, and is able to deploy with an entirely French made strike group. We should really worry about the state of the RN and take quick actions.
Very interesting listening to this. Feel no matter of the cost, we need to make our navy bigger with more ships and sailors, as well as all our armed forces we need more. God bless the navy and all forces that go out to keep us safe.
It enrages me that these military men from the navy are being called into these corrupt parlimentary quangos in this “committee” of lying politicians to answer stupid questions from politicians who know nothing about the military and the “trick” questions they ask are designed to “catch out” the military men - the real reason for these “meetings” are for the politicians who clearly have some other agenda, who in reality and actuality want to have and be given, however tacitly, any excuse to further cut the total size of the U.K. defence forces, including for U.K. home defence - I don’t trust the real intentions of these politicians at all
@carlharding5311you aren’t wrong, but can’t deny our navy right now is in an absolute state. We can field one CSG even though we have two carriers since we don’t have the Destroyers and frigates for another one.
@carlharding5311 Nope. Same for the ratings. The Navy has always fought against the bean-counters. A good example of this is the Falklands conflict. To save money, most of our ships were made with aluminium....which burns when you fire rockets at it!!! They wanted ships that looked good, with cheap construction costs and materials and were light (therefore saving on propulsion) but weren't actually very tough. I believe that was down to Dennis Healey, the Labour Chancellor of the Exchequer at the time.
The politicians asking the Navy why they're not big enough. The Navy saying they need to be bigger and the politicians not making them bigger. Same for the Army and the RAF.
My biggest concern is shear size, our naval units are all very capable, but not invincible. Yes we can do a lot in the north sea with a single type 45, if that ship is sunk or damaged we have nothing in the north sea. It may be very efficient to run without backups, but it would be great to have at least one backup for each ship, or at least a pool of ships.
I agree. You have to assume that there will be losses and have a capable reserve to replace those losses, at least for short notice without reducing the effectiveness of the fleet. If we were to lose 1/4 of our ships. Our navy would be severely diminished in capability. Our navy should be at least 33% bigger than it currently is.
And it has to be said, this country, the UK, is finished, and it will never be back. I can't believe what my own fellow countrymen have become. We have a society today, who all watched our, then, PM, (Johnston, the elitist, paid off Washington puppet), betray all of us, betray our own country, and betray our own grandparents! Standing in Ukraine, and outright lying, like the most uneducated excuse for a PM, any of us have ever seen, heard, or ever experienced before! And not only that, no, but then lifting Zelenskiy's hand in the air, while shouting out "Slava Ukraini" (The official slogan of Stepan Bandera's OUN ,order of Ukraine), who were Ukrainian bourgeois nationalists, Banderites, and Nazi henchmen! So, just how treacherous was that? It was 100%, outright treachery, against everything we've all been brought up believing in! Only 25-30 years ago, he'd of been removed for that. Yet we saw people in this country, waving their Ukrainian flags, agreeing with him, even joining in, shouting out "Slava Ukraini"? Seriously, I can't believe that to be honest, I mean, are you kidding me? What shameful, and what a disgraceful thing to do. What a complete lack of understanding? These people we see supporting Ukraine have no idea what they're doing, or even why they're doing it. They've clearly become as uneducated as the Americas! It was members of the OUN, that took the most active part in the mass murder in Ukraine and Poland during October 1942, murdering millions of innocent people. Yet it just seems these people here today know nothing about the history, or any of these facts, let alone understand just how treacherous that really was? Our own, then PM, knowingly, and purposely, betrayed our own grandparents, (many who fought and gave their lives defeating Nazism)! While our own PM, (and only on behalf of the criminal USA), raises a Nazi supporter's hand in the air, while shouting out "Slava Ukraini"? And nobody in this country said a word about it? Kiss this country goodbye. All these people we see supporting Ukraine, are only traitors against every one of us, traitors against our own country, traitors against our own grandparents, and traitors against everything we've all been brought up believing in. And this is exactly why nobody should ever form an opinion on anything, without being fully aware of all the facts. You start to harm yourselves, you become easily led, easily lied too. And that then sees idiocy on a scale of idiocy never seen before! It's actually disturbing that we do see so many people here, believing and thinking that Russia invaded Ukraine, and Russia are in the wrong? While the truth, and the facts, are the complete opposite! I mean honestly, how could anyone think or believe that Russia have acted in any way, other than 100% the right way, 100% the ethical way, and a 100% the moral way, in absolutely everything they've done? It's not, and it never has been, a "Russian invasion of Ukraine". Seriously, only a clown could think it was!. Obviously, we do hear that from our own lying government (of paid off Washington puppets), yet they obviously know, and they all know very well, that it wasn't, and isn't, a Russian invasion of Ukraine. But read our own? Many of these people don't even know what we've all really seen happen in Ukraine, (since the illegal US coup of Ukraine in 2014). Many of them don't even know that it was the USA that planned the coup in Ukraine! And many of them have no idea, that the "illegal" Ukrainian government's, army, with their neo-Na*i (NATO trained thugs), have non-stop been trying to murder and wipe out all those innocent Eastern Ukrainians, for the last 9 years! And why? Because those former Eastern Ukrainians, speak Russian, and they didn't agree with the illegal coup committed against their legally elected government. So, the undeniable truth is, these people we see unbelievably supporting Ukraine, are supporting Ukraine trying to murder all those innocent former eastern Ukrainians. Regardless if they may think so or not?, that's exactly what they're all supporting. What we really saw, was, after the coup during Maidan, we saw the western Ukrainians attack, and outright murder many of the eastern Ukrainians. Then on 14th May 2014, those Eastern Ukrainians hold a referendum on whether they should claim independence from Ukraine, (who only want to slaughter them all). And they overwhelmingly voted to claim their own independence from Ukraine, (seeing the creation of both) the Donetsk People's Republic, and the Luhansk People's Republic. Then, in February 2022, both the Donetsk People's Republic, and the Luhansk People's Republic, saw Ukraine building up a military force of over 200,000 troops (with Nazi battalions included) on their borders, (who were well dug in, and heavily armed with modern western weapons targetting them). Ukraine were preparing to carry out a pre-planned full-frontal military assault against all those innocent people in Eastern Ukraine, to wipe them all out. Many Brits support that today. Then we saw both the Donetsk People's Republic, and the Luhansk People's Republic (request) Russian military protection from Ukraine, and (request) Russian military assistance against Ukraine's illegal government's army and their Nazi murdering thugs. - To which Russia (quite rightly) agreed, while also recognising their own independence from Ukraine. Putin then made it very clear, what Russia's aim was in Ukraine (before they entered), and honestly, he could not have made it any clearer, than he did. He told us all, the aim for Russia was to protect those Eastern Ukrainian people (who have been subjected to bullying, torture, murder, and attempted genocide against them by the Kiev regime for the last eight years) - About time too, is the truth. For Russia to achieve that, they planned to carry out a full "demilitarization and denazification" of Ukraine, to bring to justice, all war criminals responsible for the bloody war crimes against civilians in Donbass. - Good is the truth, well done Russia is the correct response! Because no matter where anyone's loyalty may lie?, we, (the people), never support wrong, over right, but should always be willing to stand up and fight for right, over wrong! And btw, nobody has ever attempted to claim, that an invited, and requested military intervention, into a country, to protect innocent people from slaughter, as a military invasion by anyone, not ever! Well, apart from these clowns today. We then saw, during 23-27 September 2022, the Donetsk People's Republic, and the Luhansk People's Republic, hold a referendum whether to join Russia, or to remain part of Ukraine, (who only want to slaughter them all). They then, again, overwhelmingly voted to join the Russian Federation, and were elated to finally do so. Yet so many people, just believe the western propaganda narrative, that wrongly claims Russia invaded Ukraine? So, the reality is, these people we see supporting Ukraine, must unbelievably, think, that Russia protecting all those innocent people (at their own request), is a Russian invasion of Ukraine, and the wrong thing for Russia to do? So, they must have expected Russia to just ignore all those innocent eastern Ukrainian people's request for help and protection from Ukraine? And then just watch Ukraine murder them all? Think about it? That's exactly what they must have expected to see? And that, really is, only a Nazi mindset.

Life as a Navy Engerneer is tough.. I saw it myself and honestly I cannot commend them more. Whils't the ships company go home, enjoy leave or even their evening times... the job of an engerneer simply never ends. If we want to keep engerneers then the fact is this... pay them more. They work twice maybe even three times as hard as everyone else onboard so in my view.. they need that dedication, that contribution to be properly paid for. Nothing works, runs, stays afloat without them they are critical and they are the best. Pay them properly and the contribution will cover the sacrafices they make and they will stay and the fleet will be properly manned! Honestly any ex RN or currently serving member of the Navy today will agree with me.. they are by far.. the best and most hard working people onboard.. they have to be.. you cannot be a bad engerneer and survive.. PAY THEM and they will stay.. end of story boys.

Retention of people is a significant issue not just availability of a recruiting pipe-line. They need to do more to make the lived experience more attractive to people throughout their careers. Outsourcing everything shore-side to civilian companies was a big mistake. 3rd line engineering, catering, site management, security, transport - it's all been outsourced to the determent and availability of the services provided, not to mention being vastly more expensive now.
I would really suggest before 3rd Line Engineering is moved back in house they seriously brush up their engineers standards, I work in exactly that sector you said and the state of some of the stuff we receive from Naval Vessels is shocking and when we actually go out to them it gets worse with a clear lack of knowledge and proper thorough training.
We need more submarines, frigates, destroyers , more fighter jets , we shouldn’t let nato members tell what we do with our own military, we need more people join the military fast and quickly,
I applaud the First Sea Lord on his choice of words and answers to what are leading questions on the capability of the Royal Navy ... in various scenarios including going to war. But throughout the brief of the meeting and associated opinions and consents given, I can't help thinking from his comments, that he is continually fighting to keep an element of what is a "real necessity" to enable us to meet commitments throughout ... whatever they may be. And it has to be said, it's all about funding. Gone are the days when we had a huge fleet parked at Scapa Flow which enabled us as a maritime nation, to properly go to war if needed. And yes we're part of Nato so you could argue that we don't need the same number of ships ... but as he stated clearly we ARE a leading Nato member, and taking into consideration geo-political changes that can happen under unforseen circumstance very quickly, frankly I'm amazed he still has a good head of hair! ... all our services are underfunded in my opinion, when you look at the perspective of potential adversaries that now exist in the world. Accountants have been allowed to have a judgement call in successive governments past ... and people like the First Sea Lord are left to "manage" whilst government and poor MOD decisions waste millions elsewhere. Will we ever learn? .... I hope so for my grandchildren's sake.
Interesting video, sad to see the state of the armed forces these days, used to be such a promising career i had friends who served in the army, navy and RAF they all got out in the late 90’s apart from the guy in the RAF he left in 2004 they all told me stories of down sizing and cost saving being a pain in the ass and wondering how capabilities would be maintained looks like it only got worse
Subsequent governments over the course of the past 45 years have diminished our military to the point that in the event of an attack upon the country, we would struggle to defend ourselves!; we are an island nation, and all 3 services have been cut to the bone. 30 years ago the Royal navy was twice it's current size, and the Royal Airforce possessed 36 squadrons of front line fighter aircraft; we now have 7..
It does seem that their are unacceptable risks that the navy is being required to take because of the stretch on the type 23 fleet- for example the opv's deploying in places where frigates would be deployed a decade or two ago. They are not designed as corvettes, have very little ability to defend themselves against anti shipping weapons and yet are deployed in places like the straight of hormuz- and after exhausting softkill measures are practically helpful against even primitive silkworm types. Artisan radar, 3x4 exls camm and/or a 40/57mm gun would be a great means would definitely be suitable small footprint weapons to install
WTH? You guys sent an OPV to Hormuz? Our OPVs usually don't venture outside our EEZ. And I just checked, your OPVs are about as well armed as our Coast Guard ships. Our Navy's OPV at least have an Oto Merla SRGM and a couple of CIWS.
1SL is impressive. But he's still focusing on the global role and things like opvs and forward deployed RMs plus rightly the pro SSBN role. The problem is we might be at war with Russia or Iran next week, with a carrier with 12 fighters ,, and 4 airdefence escorts available to cover fleet air defence, UK air defence, and supposedly future abm defence . The threat is essentially the same as that which drove the 1998 review to 12 AAW escorts to perform the same roles, Essentially, it's all very good, but 40 to 50 % short of the needed numbers in a hot war.
I find it totally inappropriate for the committee to ask about the number of ships on standby at immediate notice. That has to be a closed door conversation
I sent a message to Navy outlook about this problem and explained the situation with manning and the reason why we have a manning issue. I was just ignored these senior Officers are completely out of touch with the the manning problems they have, and I explained this in my email to the Navy outlook.
Thats what they were talking about Navy matters. I think manpower is the most important part of this argument and paying Babcock and B&E systems millions for building and maintaining the fleet is all well and good but you need the manpower to make them a military asset that is at a state of readiness. But let’s see what happens the two Admirals that were doing the review won’t be in the Navy in 5 years time and just pass the can on to the next senior officer. It’s how it works unfortunately.
@ 56:20 +1 vote. Ex-stoker (RN marine engineer) here. Served on T23 HMS Grafton (F80). After serving 6 years in the RN I then graduated with my BEng honours and then spent a further 10 years in automotive engineering. Finally realising I was continually being underpaid and also under appreciated I moved into commercial sales and now do engineering in my spare time on my own projects. Sad really. I wished engineers were better appreciated in British society.
I would say if both the first sea lord & Rear Admiral Moorhouse could speak without being restraint by the CDS Admiral Radakin they would say I need another Aircraft Carrier and 6 Destroyers and 6 Frigates Extra to do all the tasks the Government want them to do
Definitely don’t need another aircraft carrier!! Physical ships are great but WE DONT HAVE THE PEOPLE! Expertise and experience takes longer and is harder to generate than a physical ship. The problem is not just a lack of ships - it is moreover the lack of people to sail them.
@@allanxxxxxxxxYou’re missing the point - it would be great if we could have 11+ carriers like the USA but we don’t have the people, the aircraft or supporting surface units for the 2 we have now, let alone a 3rd. It’s not just about building, it’s about recruitment and we can’t do either very well.
A friend of mine was on the Sirius it went in for a refit it took a year to finish it came out of the dock it circumnavigated the globe and then it was scrapped on its return after spending millions on it that's not the way to do it design the boat so you can whip out the engines easily through the deck I presume they will go first .
Why is it that we dont have any politicians who can answer specific questions fully, comprehensively and without scurrying away citing "needs to consult an aid".
Part of me says because they’re playing politics and avoiding committing, ie lying The other part of me is that politicians are people that are just popular (voted in) not really put in position based on merit, like these guys are. So your average politician is generally quite unknowing about a lot of the things they deal with at a macro level. Which would explain some perceived incompetent of politicians.
I think what we need in the navy, are reserve vessels. We do have a decently sized and very well equipped fleet, but we don't have reserve ships if we lose any, losing a type 45 would be a permeant loss of a full sixth of our current destroyer fleet. The City class looks good, but we need to build more, we should replace the ageing type 22 by a 1 to 1 number at least. Although, I'd much appreciate a number (at least 2) more to be built for a reserve force, even if they spend their lives in dock with no deployments, I'd rather have it than not need it, than need it and not have it. That is something I'm more than happy for the government to dip into our taxes to pay for it.
For the past 40-50 years, we have been reminded that shrinking UK sphere of influence suggests we need a smaller Navy. And yet, over that same period, the Royal Navy and Royal Marines have seen increasing demand on resources, (ìncluding Humanitarian operations). Surely, we should be increasing their size; and not repeatedly cutting down. That obsession with cuts might have prevented us from re-taking the Falklands. And the same with Army & Airforce and SAS?
That’s what TY31 and TY32 will provide. Just don’t say Corvette it was a banned word in the RN for about 5 years. 3 x SSK’s would also reduce the burden on the SSN fleet
@@intothemultiverse1033 are they not just replacing the current frigates? Also should have at least 10 destroyers. Yes we are going the right way in tech but the size is frightening. @@michaelkelly9545 if I could click my fingers and give you 10 destroyers, 10 frigates, and 10 patrol craft, you wouldn’t be able to crew them. Kudos to him for being honest even though I`m still waiting to hear about ALL the military being stripped to the marrow by ALL governments past and present.
It's clear that the priority of our British Royal Navy should be to defend our shores & immediately stop & end all the invasions of Great Britain & the United Kingdom & Commonwealth & keep defending our nation & protecting the British people. The Royal Navy should not be involved in criminal, unconstitutional & treasonous activities, with unlawful wars, or unlawfully interfering in other nations affairs. All of those within the armed services, .. should be made aware immediately that they should all be standing under our natural unalienable Common Law Constitutional principles, including those within the 2001 lawfully invoked Article61 of our original perpetual Constitutional MagnaCharta1215.
The boss is dying to just tell them that due to various decisions, lack of decisions, lack of investment and recruitment...but far more importantly, retaining skilled crews. The Navy is almost on its arse, it can barely cover its standard required commitments and there are simply no much toys left in the toy chest. Politicians have seen the military as an easy target for cost cutting and manpower reduction for decades. To fully train personnel can take a long time, as in several years at least, and as the Ukraine war has shown, people die in war and in substantial numbers....there is no point having just a few people trained in a particular skill on a ship, you need to understand that those people could be made ineffective. You need a lot more people trained in every skill set in case of casualties.
It's always wonderful to see our profesional and dedicated armed forces show what honest and "to the point" debate is supposed to be. And then there are people like Mark Francois with his constant crooked smile...looking to score points and add some spin.
We need a larger navy more ships submarines and a bigger royal marines unit of a specialized fighting force. But it's the Army that worries me as most soldiers are leaving as soldiers are not happy due to poor accommodation poor equipment wages are shocking and this is only getting worse.
I love this, an actual smart conversation between civilised intellectuals. I don't really know how it works but surely its down to the government how big our Navy is and putting penalties in place for late ship deliveries for example, I don't really see that being the Admirals job? Maybe I'm wrong, but does he have the power to say look you're years late I want this discount. Seems to me to be a governments role to say this is the penalty for late delivery. I guess governments come and go these days at a rate of knots so makes sense to devolve that power.
Falklands.... I remember we managed a whole task force in a couple of weeks, if you look today we dont have as many ships in the whole navy as we sent down for that little skirmish... the navy is too small to be effective.
As someone involved industrially in the manufacturing of these new vessels, most of the machinery to make this equipment is older than the ships being replaced. British manufacturing compared to Japanese has not had the budget input needed to keep up with international engineering capabilities.
When the companies making them are charging what they are for them, that being FAR more than a comparable vessel of our allies, why aren’t they using that money to buy new machinery? Absolute top of the range industrial machinery costs max tens of millions but the ships cost £1billion+ each in many cases…
I actually thought the politicians were asking the pertinent questions but getting faced with waffle from the two admirals . Too much corporate speak from the First Sea Lord . Why not come out and say I’m 5 frigates short. 3 submarines short , my ships are not properly armed ( no surface to surface weapon ). An admiral talking about “financial envelopes” for god sake . Too easy to say increased training to deal with hypersonics we need weaponry . And he didn’t answer the question on stockpiles . Again too easy to say what keeps him awake at night is safety of his people . Of course it is - it doesn’t need stating . This guy could be CEO of a company . A slick smooth apologist . He’s probably lining up a job at BAe systems . Too much corporate speak , not an admiral ! Having no SSN at sea, a point brought out by the politician not the admiral , is an embarrassment . OPVs representing us around the world . Little if any air defence , fitted with a small gun only - also an embarrassment . Can deploy a carrier task group but only with American planes (2021 China deployment ) , didn’t have enough F35s ourselves . Don’t have enough now ! Embarrassing . Truth is we need a bigger navy . Didn’t hear the First Sea Lord say it .
let the Navy be a Navy and the other armed forces do there job not used as man power pool to get the government out of the poo when civilians go on strike
The problems which I have observed over the last 40 years, have arisen with the increased reliance on "industrial partners", ....otherwise known as non-military suppliers! When WW2 was looming on the horizon, certain individuals in government were approached by industrial leaders with solutions, and those political leaders did under-the-table deals to "start research", which lead to certain companies having prepared for war, with capacity to build and arm our airforce and navy, WAY AHEAD of what was known at the time! Had these "visionaries" not done that, we would have been left with a VERY MUCH less prepared ability to resist German and other axis forces around the world! The UK NEEDS to re-nationalise and recreate a NATIONAL ARMOURY, for Navy, Airforce, and Army! Ship building, munitions production, storage and maintenance, aircraft design, and armour development, are all industries that the UK has excelled at in the past, and STILL instil pride in our population. If we can keep the political interests out of these industries, we can keep costs down! (and the British government are infamous for killing some very innovative projects, by overt interference in the procurement processes!) The UK has UNIQUE requirements from it's armed forces, and only the US is anywhere near comparable! Recruitment offices should be REINSTATED and combined with ALL THREE services. This would allow the three services to assess those who walk through the door for suitability to serve in each. The reinstatement of NATIONAL SERVICE, to prime the population for service at short notice, (wartime, or national crisis) would be a national security solution, that would become a foundation for security WORLDWIDE, too! Combined with service in the NHS, housebuilding, power and water supplies and telecommunications, our workforces could be moved anywhere in the world to aid reconstruction after any number of human and natural catastrophes! .....with the help of NAVAL LOGISTICAL SUPPORT! We live in rapidly changing times, but it also requires that we decide what we want, and how we get it, NOW! We need to SET IN STONE who we are, and what we stand for! As the rest of the world slips and slides from one crisis to another, we would provide something SOLID, ....a BEACON OF HOPE, to all who need it, in a world of increasing CHAOS! The UK is no longer held back by EU legislation, and bureaucracy. We can again, set our own course, but it has to be OUR COURSE, and not follow anyone else!
@@karmakazi101 do you suggest the world queues to pick a fight? "OH, it's our turn to have a war, so can you wait 'til we're finished?" ...There's a nice chap! That's not how wars work! If one nation starts, another two or three will use that as an opportunity to make capital whilst everyone else is looking elsewhere! ....UNLESS, as global policeman, you have enough "boats" (and other forces) to be in that location too? Yes, we have TWO carrier groups, but how many were needed to win WW2? Bare in mind, only the UK, the US and Japan had ANY, after the German navy was crippled in the North Atlantic, and the Italians were bottled up in the Northern Med! Modern navies have a much longer reach in the 21stC, but they are also much more vulnerable to tech attacks! (missiles and drones)
@@karmakazi101 a study was done when Georgia was invaded, and it was noted that the UK has approximatelyTWO WEEKS worth of ammunition, should we find ourselves thrust into an armed conflict! Great tech, but not enough to win a battle, let alone a war! Hence my point, we need to take ACTION, AND FAST, to put our production and procurement processes into HYPERDRIVE, if we are to be an effective military force.
@@karmakazi101You're talking out of your backside! ...repeating all the EXCUSES shoved down our throats by "peacetime" politicians! I learned what I did from HISTORY BOOKS and talking to old soldiers who SERVED in WW2 and Korea and Suez as well as the modern wars in the Falklands, and Gulf wars! What they all had in common was a DEEP contempt for politicians and diplomats! They refused to accept the inevitability of wars and the preparations needed, and they also ALLOWED WARS TO START, without thinking how they would be stopped! BILLIONS of lives have been lost because no-one was prepared to PREVENT wars! You prevent a war by being the biggest, baddest, dog in the junkyard, with the least intent to use the power at your disposal. But at the same time, you are the most alert and PREPARED to chew ANYONE who starts a fight! Does that cost a lot? ...HELL YEAH! That's why we created NATO, to spread the costs! Unfortunately, those same SPINELESS politicians have infiltrated this MILITARY organisation, and now put the greatest burden on the USA and shirk their own responsibilities! As a major player in the military world, WE have an obligation to pick up the pieces and LEAD the rest of the world by SHOWING THEM what needs to be done, and show we CAN protect ourselves, when needed, but we can also HELP others when needed too! It's what ALLIES do!
Regarding recruitment & retention... trained & experienced people in the RN resign because, based upon their present level of remuneration, there's almost zero possibility that they will ever be able to afford a mortgage, and / or fund a decent vehicle, and / or save money. They certainly like their job & they love the camaraderie; veritably, they don't want to leave... BUT, the money they get paid doesn't cover the real-world bills and / or provide them with a financial future. One can have all the modern ships & aircraft & weapon systems that one likes but there's no substitute for experience !
As a Turkish Soldier, these are my observations; -UK Navy high command is much more capable than the army and air high offices. - This First Lord will definitely have a political career after he steps down - The capacity of re-orienting the ships on the mission is as powerful capacity as having a nuclear missile, but the benchers do not seem understood that -I am convinced again you guys are maritime nation.

Our military are in the main, responsible and disciplined. Unfortunately, same cannot be said for many MPs and Civil Servants, if the covid management is anything to judge them by...
11 years to build a frigate and 4 to refit is absolutely unacceptable. And it's not lack of knowledge or the ships being difficult to build; it's classic embezzlement across the board. Draw a project out as long as possible with countless cost overruns which are going directly into politicians and backers pockets. The government and its buddies need sorted out, pronto!
It is only 11 years to prove, build and fit the 1st gen 5 frigate, HMS Glasgow, especially as changes are still being made as we learn the lessons from the current conflict in SE Europe. As he says, less delays are to be expected for HMS Cardiff and the subsequent launches in the class. The type 23s, which are quoted as taking 4 years to refit, as he also says are tough to maintain and are, essentially, life expired, meaning those decisions on how to spend the 'peace dividend' through the late 80s and 90s have now come back to absolutely bite us in the ass due to the lack of planning for their replacements at that time.
The UK is a maritime nation? You could have fooled me. For decades, UK governments have run down the navy (John Nott was forestalled from doing that in the 1980s by the Falklands War) and allowed the merchant marine to decline. The carriers were a political project and I am not sure how the Admiral defines 'deployment' bearing in mind that they do not have complete autonomous air wings or the crew levels of US carriers. I thought there was a lot of management jargon in this session - the responses confirmed my understanding that crews are pulled together for each deployment, which is like trying to staff a company with contractors and cannot be good for effectiveness and crew cohesion, however good the quality of the sailors and the training and the ships (not "platforms" - urgh). The Rear Admiral even said 'delta' - which is a banking term for change, derived from financial maths so established and understood in the banking context but inappropriate outside it - just say 'change'. I am not an expert and not a troll - I just want the government to give proper attention to the armed service which ultimately is essential for UK security.
We have more air engineering officers in the FAA than aircraft. In fact aircraft engines probably. Three ring commanders in charge of squadrons when they were just Lt Cdrs a couple of decades ago. Responsibility has been delegated down to lower ranks in the ratings and Snco levels more and more . We can't even protect our shores from an invasion of rubber boats.
The First Sea Lord is a very capable man and I am happy with him at the helm. One thing stands out and that is the ignorance of some polititions insofar as they control the cash which is far less than is needed, then blame the tea lady in the dockyard for everything that goes wrong.

Maybe one day, we will have Naval Chiefs that will actually just say to the MOD and Westminster "we don't have enough personal, ships or Munition stocks to be able to defend the UK from a full Peer Adversary Maritime Attack" Instead of being Yes Men and thus worrying about their future political prospects. As Mark Francois would suggest, Lets not Kidd ourselves here!
I'm ex Royal Navy. They got rid off the artificers about 2011. But mistake. Calling a 17 /18 year old an engineering technician after 16 weeks training is a joke. The tiffs did 5 years apprenticeships. Now when ships break down at sea, more often than not they need to fly out civilians to sort it out. Where as before on my ship hms intrepid, the tiffys could make and fix ANYTHING. Also we have only 6 destroyers and 11 frigates. It's pathetic.
British readiness is neither here nor there, we don't have the capacity to do anything but say yap-yap to the US, apart perhaps from our submarine fleet. I recall passing 3 RN vessels in the Channel in good visibility, not one flying an Ensign, not one responding to a flag dip - half asleep - and in combination with Border Farce, more or less pointless nowadays as we've let in so many who are quite openly, even statedly enemies already, with more coming daily. Can we either build a real Navy or just use the cash just to protect our borders instead?
Mark Francois is so disingenuous and slimy. "How many ships/submarines could you put to sea tonight?" These are complete 'gotcha' questions to make him look good for his constituents and to make the navy look like fools. If the Chinese or the Russians were putting a task force to sea, we would be able to see this via satellite and other intelligence with 30 days' notice, if not more. When the Russians invaded Ukraine in February 2022, we saw them building up and holding training exercises on the border as early as November 2021. You can't hide a military build up. The MOD doesn't expect the First Sea Lord to be able to put ships to sea tonight - that's why they require him to maintain a readiness of X number of ships at 48 hours notice and a further Y number of ships at 30 days notice. These are ships which need to be loaded with ammunition, missiles need to be loaded via cranes, food needs to be stocked, crews need refresher training, computer systems need updating, even toilet paper needs to be stocked etc. and these things happen in cycles. Asking him to put ships to sea tonight and then looking disappointed is like going into a restaurant and getting upset when they can't seat your party of 50 the same evening.
The SeaLord is a switched on unit. Answers questions clearly, logically, confidently, respectfully, in a relaxed manner also. Intelligent and good communicator. Wish we had more of these people at the top.

Any time stamp or specific points made?
@@user-mr4uo5mw9n Firstly, the RN doesn't have an issue with recruiting - in fact last year they had their best recruiting numbers in over 25 years. The problem for the RN is retention. Many will only do 4 years, leave, and take that experience with them into the private sector. Especially where someone has a specialist skill. Defence companies are very happy to take them. The good news is that the worst is upon us. The 2030s are going to be a good decade for the navy based off of current plans. And those are plans set while the world just _looks_ like it might get scary.

Sir Ben is an outstanding officer. I am retired RN now, but would have loved to have served under his leadership.
Just like Jingles?
My biggest concern is shear size, our naval units are all very capable, but not invincible.
Yes we can do a lot in the north sea with a single type 45, if that ship is sunk or damaged we have nothing in the north sea. It may be very efficient to run without backups, but it would be great to have at least one backup for each ship, or at least a pool of ships.
I think we need far more ships locally.
I agree. You have to assume that there will be losses and have a capable reserve to replace those losses, at least for short notice without reducing the effectiveness of the fleet. If we were to lose 1/4 of our ships. Our navy would be severely diminished in capability. Our navy should be at least 33% bigger than it currently is.
Exactly. They aren't going to take any hits in a direct confrontation. Also, we need more subs as well as surface ships @@Scottx125Productions

As an American, I can certainly share in the frustration in understanding reasons why building, retrofitting, and maintenance times are insufferable
Not true. Better conditions willing keep people.
@jablot5054 Money is a bigger motivator
The wealthy should pay them more... We have people struggling to live and feed themselves.
This, when I was in my final year of my MEng the Army, Airforce and RN would HOUND students to apply.
When we heard the salaries people would audible laugh and walk away.
@@jablot5054 The conditions now are 10x better than before. if Engerneers are still leaving the it's not the cosy gulch that keeps them, it's the compensation.
I recognise they have talked about the engineering problem, but im very surprised they have not talked about chef crisis within the Royal Navy
That’s because no f*cker has ever passed the course
Retention of people is a significant issue not just availability of a recruiting pipe-line. They need to do more to make the lived experience more attractive to people throughout their careers. Outsourcing everything shore-side to civilian companies was a big mistake. 3rd line engineering, catering, site management, security, transport - it's all been outsourced to the determent and availability of the services provided, not to mention being vastly more expensive now.
💯👍retention! You tend to put the plug in before running the bath.
More support for the Senior Service is required.
I cannot finish the whole thing but I am very proud of all at this meeting. Holding industry to account was the best question.
"How many of our ships are ready?"
First Sea Lord: Good Question.
We need more submarines, frigates, destroyers , more fighter jets , we shouldn’t let nato members tell what we do with our own military, we need more people join the military fast and quickly,
Whole point of Nato is a collaborative alliance
They don't tell us. We agree with NATO to provide capabilities. So do the French, Germans, US, and every other Navy. That's how alliances work.
you joining up then?
Can I asked how long you served ?
Shocked at lack of available hulls at any moment
Interesting how slowly the wheels of industry moves in the UK.
Sometime the answers don't come from the top but the workers on the frontline.

Why is there a video on youtube of our highest ranking naval officer explaining in detail the state of our naval readiness?
Appreciate the upload. I hate navigating the normal website
Straight talking - good.
We should be asking how an invasion of unarmed goat herders, have sailed quietly into dover and drawn 10 million a day out of the tax payers purse.
I know, understand and appreciate the deep force for good the Royal Navy has in it's history.
I find it totally inappropriate for the committee to ask about the number of ships on standby at immediate notice. That has to be a closed door conversation
Still huge firepower not to be taken lightly at all.
I thought the same
Two lookers before the committee? The WAFFU’s are taking over!!!
I sent a message to Navy outlook about this problem and explained the situation with manning and the reason why we have a manning issue. I was just ignored these senior Officers are completely out of touch with the the manning problems they have, and I explained this in my email to the Navy outlook.
Navy outlook? What is that.
I hope you don’t mean this channel as it’s nothing to do with the actual navy it just does stories about naval matters.
Both Admirals are Observers (and Principal Warfare Officers (Underwater Warfare)). So is the Second Sea Lord. A real mafia.
I noticed that as well, safe hands indeed. ( I was a P )

Physical ships are great but WE DONT HAVE THE PEOPLE! Expertise and experience takes longer and is harder to generate than a physical ship. The problem is not just a lack of ships - it is moreover the lack of people to sail them.

Why is it that we dont have any politicians who can answer specific questions fully, comprehensively and without scurrying away citing "needs to consult an aid".
Part of me says because they’re playing politics and avoiding committing, ie lying
The other part of me is that politicians are people that are just popular (voted in) not really put in position based on merit, like these guys are. So your average politician is generally quite unknowing about a lot of the things they deal with at a macro level. Which would explain some perceived incompetent of politicians.
Because hes a sailor not a politician
Shipyard capacity needs to be increased.

When your an island. A strong navy is essential. Our navy needs increasing by at least 20%
My old captain on HMS Illustrious top bloke

Our armed forces have been cut to the bone inreadyness to slot into an European defence force...
Really? What function of that force are RN assets expected to provide?
(and the British government are infamous for killing some very innovative projects, by overt interference in the procurement processes!)
The UK has UNIQUE requirements from it's armed forces, and only the US is anywhere near comparable!

We have plenty of admirals and officers for a huge navy.
Standard ratio is 10:1 on ship and you need a bunch more to run it behind the scenes, that I think is perfectly reasonable
The First Sea Lord is a very capable man and I am happy with him at the helm. One thing stands out and that is the ignorance of some polititions insofar as they control the cash which is far less than is needed, then blame the tea lady in the dockyard for everything that goes wrong.
You WOKE fool....Hes NOT talking about the SEA....hes talking about the SEE!!!......He works for the UK CITY OF LONDON CROWN CORPORATION = ROTHSCHILD = DEEP STATE. He stands under MARITIME TIME LAW OF THE HOLY SEE....(NATO IS DEEP STATE ROTHSCHILD PRIVATE MILITARY) .a separate legal entity and jurisdiction to the rest of London..Wales..Scotland...Ireland...England and the rest of the World!........ The question you should be asking is what are they hiding and protecting...they dont want you to know!!..........WAKE UP!!
Marketing a slave with fiction such as Royal Navy must be one too[, no?]
"How many ships/submarines could you put to sea tonight?"
These are complete 'gotcha' questions to make him look good for his constituents and to make the navy look like fools.
Looks quite gangsta with all that bling
What gets me is the Army seems to have proper people at the top. The importance of that is out of this universe.
God speed we all come out of this OK.
