"I will illuminate you with a flare"..."I will speak to you in harsh terms"..."I will not invite you to my club for drinks"...
I thought he said(
“ I will eliminate you with flair”
Synonyms can be tricky!
"I will give you a stern look." "I will shake my fist in your general direction."
Can we have tea tomorrow?
“I shall taunt you a second time!”
I will then serve you tea, but the water will be cold.
In my mind, "I will illuminate you with a flare," is UNCLOS code which means, "I'm on page 8 of the booklet both our bridges are reading." The book is titled 'Steps to Legally Justify Lethal Action at Sea'. There's a shared understanding that the Iranians can turn the pages for themsleves and see that Page 9 is a shot across the bow and Page 10 is one round amidships at the waterline. Probably wouldnt have come to Page 10 really, but the message was communicated effectively. (Because, why else would you illuminate with a flare in broad daylight when this is taking place?)
.....would that be "extreme illumination"??.......extreme and total illumination.
@@ZEROmg13I don't know why but I cracked up laughing at this comment. Thank you sir.
@@Bone_Thugsimple, you can be in international waters. You CANT tell people to leave in international waters. It should be obvious that you dont point your boat directly at a warship without getting a stern warning as well...
There was something similar in the Black sea when a British warship was in region of Crimea before the russians seized it ...... russian pilots were buzzing very close to the British ship and ship had to attenuate down their radar because it coulda fried the electronics of the russian jets . Russians and Iranians are equally crazy .
They were exercising legal right of passage in a straits. Law of the sea.
Gotta have some balls to threaten a Royal Navy ship in what is essentially a fancy speedboat.

It would have been advantageous to have a Farsi speaking crew member on deck to communicate with the Iranian boats considering that communication would be a problem. Many battles have lived and died by bad communication. But the crew is British

Probably just a covert way of saying: "No hard feelings mate, we're both just doing our job."
What had to be chilling was being a crew member on that Iranian gunboat.
Or in T shirts on the British destroyer.
My favorite comic relief was from a USAF video where a flummoxed Chinese Navy radio operator started meowing over the radio.
Had no idea that face-saving come-back was used internationally.
You should see Drachinifel's episode on the Russian Second Pacific Fleet, or look into the story of the HMS Gloworm
Iranians probably heard "I will eliminate you with a flare" and were thinking "what kind of horrible weapon is a flare?"
Illuminate with a flare (very basically) means their weapons are locked on you.
Illuminate with flare is basic navy codeword for target lock on you
@@thwales2520 I actually thought it was some sort of harmless shot that is a final warning.
😂😂😂
I’m surprised they allowed the boat so close!
Dispite them saying "highly illegal and dangerous" at the start, it's not illegal even in the slightest (the danger is questionable). This was in international waters, its only illegal to intentionally endanger a ship or impeed its course directly, approaching close and doing neither is legal, this falls into that case.
They legally could do nothing to stop them approaching, a warship has no legal exclusion zone around it beyond safe navigational distance (which is actually quite small), and even then all you can do is file a complaint through the courts. Anything that would directly prevent its approach could be deemed an act of war. Even with all the Iranian bluster and half threats, its all still frankly legal, its international cat and mouse politics.
A better (well bigger) example exists of why this isn't illegal. During the cold war a US carrier (USS Kitty Hawk) accidentally hit a Russian attack submarine (K314) which had been for days, shadowing the US fleet (it was inside their formation for most of that time, the americans kept coming up with theoretical ways to sink it, the russians the same to the americans, it was frankly standard practice), the submarine lost precise track of the carrier (sunmerged and alot of noise in the area) and the carrier of it (its designed to be sneaky), it surfaced to periscope depth and was in the path of the carrier, neither ship could fully avoid the other and the carrier clipped the sub (damaged its propeller, no significant damage, was lucky). Both sides declared it an accident (it was one, caused by both sides playing cat and mouse), the Americans even assisted the submarine in returning to Russian waters with an escort and tow.
no courts needed get too close and cease to exist and they know it.@@cgi2002
I believe the “why” it is illegal as a knowledge point from a veteran is if this military vessel which in open waters still acts in capacity as it’s country and the laws within, and the same as the Iranian boat. And the Royal Navy boat shot down and sunk the Iranian boat, not only would that be killing others (illegal within the laws of Britain) but thats stating an international war between the two countries. Remember it’s still a “who shot first scenario.” If the Iranians hit the tanker first, they shot first and the military vessel can retaliate and sink no issue. If the Royal Navy sinks first, it’s a proclamation for war. These things are finicky in open waters. It’s why commercial companies are having such a hard time and hiring private security with pirates and such.
@@JVHorvath1maybe because it wasn’t in open waters? Who determines what is open water & what isn’t? NATO? (The US). If they claim that it’s there waters, which is a fair claim considering the closest country is probably Iran then that Naval ship doesn’t have a right to be there, just because NATO claims they can…. Like what 😂

"Illuminate" sounds so much like "eliminate." They understood that.
"If you close to within 500 yards, I will illuminate you with a flare". I'm sorry, if he closes to within 500 yards you are already well within his weapons range. The idea is to keep them far away. The IRGC has gotten the Royal Navy and U.S. Navy used to them doing this, so when they really intend to do harm, you won't even know it.
The Iranians really want to scare Western warships into firing warning shots, then they can claim that the West is being aggressive, so they have to defend themselves. Which is why Western warships should not fall for Iranian provocation.
@@Steve_SharpeYes, I've had the pleasure of serving alongside may of your lads. That said, waiting to get shot in the face is never a winning strategy. The IRIN are relatively considered to be more professional. The IRGCN are the loose cannons and the ones to be concerned with.

Interesting that the British naval officer used "Yards", not meters, to indicate closing distance.
yards, yes, since a Nautical Mile is Imperial... so is the individual unit, the yard.
As far as UK/Britain goes we both use a combination of Imperial and Metric for differing things somewhat in a bizarre and for the non-Britsh, in a totally insane & confusing non-interconnected reasons and measures of units,
...such as pounds weight, is usually only for cooking or specific weights of load/cargo, otherwise Human & pet weight is in Kilgrams or Stones (14lbs per Stone)and generally not in individual pounds like Americans use (lbs), unless less than a stone.
Plus while we use metric for engineering and building things, for speed and motorised travel we use mph & miles, but for walking or shorter distances meters or yards are equally used.
Our Speedometers have both Imperial & Metric on the same dial !!
@@razor1uk610There's fewer examples here in America, but they exist. And, yes, our speedometers have mph and kph, mostly so the same cars and trucks can be sold to our friends up north. 😊
Why would he use meters?
@@krashd Because, in great part, Britain uses the metric system. For instance, you can't use Froude's equations for naval architecture without entering metric measurements in.

People saying a gun iay is no match for a destroyer have no idea what they're talking about about. This isn't ww2 where battleships have very thick hull armour. Missiles made thick armour pointless, so now most warships have minimal armour if any in most areas. A gunboat with torpedoes or anti ship missiles could cripple a warship. And when the former costs a fraction of the latter, that's a pretty cost effective trade. They are absolutely a threat to destroyers.
if the ship had torpedos it would be disintigrated before it got close or it would be disintegrated as it was preparing to fire its torpedos the destroyer let the gunboat get so close because it was defenseless
This was just one month ago and now some large vessels are now avoiding the straits due to security and ship hostage issues. Preferring to go around the cape. Is this the next flash point towards an even more unstable time in the world.
How exactly going around the cape helps shipping through the Strait of Hormuz?
