Seems like you know what you're doing so I got a question. I have a 2001 foreman 450es and it backfires and sometimes doesn't want to hold an idle.. was told I might need to adjust the valves. Would that be the cause of the backfiring and what not? I'm new to this kind of stuff and would appreciate any help! Thanks
Solly Burton thanks man, I took the carb off and took the bottom off didn't look too bad but I didn't take jets out or nothing so I'm gonna have to do a complete cleaning of it this time
Also if it doesn't want to idle, there's the idle adjustment screw and the mixture screw, it might be set too lean. Try backing the mixture screw out a little to richen the mixture up at idle.
usually they get loose from wear on the lash adjustment screws or they weren't properly torqued and they slowly back out of the lock nut but still stay tight somehow.
There’s a hole on the passenger side of the motor that’s right next to the pull start and you take a key and open it up and pull the string until you see a little T line up with the tab on the threads of the hole and then you’re top dead center
Do the valve adjustment yourself. The ONLY way to know something is done right is to do it yourself. Valve adjustment is one of the most basic procedures you can do to an atv. If you plan to own an atv you need to learn to adjust the valves. In order for valves to be quiet they must be set perfectly. Even a few thousandths to wide and they will make noise.
Seems like you know what your doing so let me ask you something. My foreman (with 6500 miles) has never had the valves adjusted (sounds like a sewing machine) and lately it doesnt want to start right up. Now its gotten to the point where it doesnt start at all. Ive checked literally everything but the last thing for me to do is adjust the valves. Could the valves be a reason why it doesnt want to start? Thanks!
It will still start with valves that are too loose. But to get rid of all of that noise adjust them. The noise you are hearing could be a worn out timing chain that finally broke too. Check for spark first. If you have good spark fuel is the next thing to check. Give it a shot of starting fluid down the intake to see if it fires for a second. If not maybe it is out of time, possibly a sheared woodruff key on the flywheel. Was is smoking real bad before it quit running? Maybe it's got really low compression.
@@mandosolly actually if your valves are that bad out of adjustment sometimes they won’t run unless like u said off starting fluid I had a 350 rancher I had to adjust every month because it like to come right back loose to the point where it wouldn’t start at all only back fire
My Suzuki Quad Runner has 17,000 and the valves went tight to the point they weren't closing properly causing hard starts. I thought mine was high mileage LOL!
I hope this foreman is still alive today I love these Hondas
Amazing how well built these are
OMG!
That is so many miles!
I hope mine gets that many. Doing a tune on mine now. It would be great to have seen you adjust those valves.
Would you mind if I used your bullet spinning video in a video of mine?
You would have to pay me to use it. I appreciate you asking me. Would it be in a youtube video?
yes. Every video of mine gets 200,00 views. I will not pay you anything. Just asking if want the free exposure.
No thank you.
Daily Dose Of Internet I over dose on your vids
@@mandosolly never seen somone reject to be in a video from somone with almost 4 million subs. Wow
Wish that you lived closer, I need the same thing done to mine.
Me too
Im impressed. I have the same wheeler.
That's a big difference I have a 2009 680 Rincon and I need to adjust the values on it
Cant wait to get mine in for this tommorow :)
I would love to see that partially restored

I think the best place to start is cleaning the carburetor, a little bit of dirt in the carb can cause trouble like that.
Solly Burton thanks man, I took the carb off and took the bottom off didn't look too bad but I didn't take jets out or nothing so I'm gonna have to do a complete cleaning of it this time
Yeah make sure the jets are all clear.

can unadjusted valves cause a high or up and down idle?
i like the before and after, thanks.
What makes valves end up unadjusted over time?
usually they get loose from wear on the lash adjustment screws or they weren't properly torqued and they slowly back out of the lock nut but still stay tight somehow.
Nice video man, great comparison...
awesome video thanks for doing that
How do you get the piston to top dead center
charlie strong also looking for this answer

Nice work
How did you get the piston top Center
Would the valves be the cause of a bike overheating? My old 500 Honda sounded exactly the same but also over heated a bit
Your coolant thermastat if it was liquid cooled
Mine makes exact same sound, dealership did a valve adjustment no change? Any ideas?

Mine needs a valve adjustment I have 640 hours
did the valve noise go away after it warmed up? mine is making a similar noise but goes away after warming up for a minute or two.
means the valves are too tight
Mine lost compression but still fires up no problem and will pull some but I can't give it a lot of throttle or it dies
tristen mason my Honda goes dead when you put the air filter cover on when you take it off it runs real good what could be the problem
Great video

Gotta do this to my 2018
How many hours do you have and how many miles I'm not sure I heard it correct 18000 miles 2600 hours holyshit
Rounded up is 7miles an hour. Seems normal to me
Sounds good!!
Does the oil is suposed to burn when your valves are not well adjusted???
Nicholas nope
When oil rings stick that means your burning oil

Did it also cause backfiring?
I mostly see the valves get tighter rather then loose on both Exhaust and intake
Same with mine
Its like brand new
O5 500 forerunner needs this mine not to bad
Before hard to start now easy to start
I have a foreman that runs fine till it heats up then dies and won’t start till it’s cool what could that be
could be a bad voltage regulator/rectifier. Put a volt meter on the battery with it idling and see what numbers you get.
Mine only has 2200 miles and I'm hearing the valves. It's a 2006 500
Yeah that thing been thru Hell....
Why in the hell wouldnt you clean the engine before opening it up allowing a chance of shit falling in it?
Because it is a Honda
Lol now the the valves are adjusted you can hear the top end rattle on it
Fuck man only intake goes to 6k's Exhaust is like 11k's. I bet that cam went flat.
The intake is six thousandths but exhaust is 6 or 9 thousandths
And starts easier as well
My foreman has 4500 miles on it..
That what i'm sounds like..
wrong about the mileage
wrong how?
My 95 wolverine looks better than that
Lol
