Thank you very much! Just did the 100 mile break-in service on my 2022 Rubicon, and this video was invaluable. Couldn't have done it without you. You are right, getting in there and learning the quad is awesome. While I had it torn apart I put dielectric grease in all my electrical connection blocks, and even relocated a block that was attached near the bottom of the frame to a higher point. I am going to try and keep it out of the water, but it is nice to know I can get wet if I need to. I installed a 420 pull start on the 520 engine (fits perfect), and that really helped me find TDC. I wish the 2022 models came with a pull start, but Honda doesn't even have it listed as an option in the US. Apparently, they come standard in Canada.
Just wanted to let you know this this is the best valve set video for these bikes on you tube. Thanks for the step by step and the tips. Made it really easy for me.
Great video. I did catch something on my Honda that was built wrong, and if you hadn't mentioned the valves being loose on TDC I'd potentially ruined my motor. My "T" mark is on the wrong stroke. I kept questioning myself, but I cought you mentioned the valves are loose. When my T mark was visible, my valves were compressed. So nicely done on mentioning that. So I completed the job and now it runs perfectly. Thank you.
I remember watching this video 2 years ago.... I got the quad apart... but getting it back together lmao!! Good thing there was a atv mech just down the road from my parents... I pushed my quad there with a big smile on my face!
Wow great video, thank you. I will do the next one myself and thanks for taking us through every step. Great pointer on putting the screws, nuts and bolts into either of the storage compartments. Never thought of that. I just end up kicking them around my garage floor.
Was not aware these utility quads required valve check on initial maintenance. That's pretty intense. Coming from the motorcycle world that would never fly.
Here I though the only time to do that was when you sell it! It ain’t a Mercedes MBE series engine that drops valves when out of adjustment. I go tight enough that the feeler gauge drags and is hard to get back in. The round casting of the cam means you can do an adjustment as long as it’s not on the lobe of the cam. Doing 6 cylinder engines you can get by a top set without cranking the motor for every cylinder to get to TDC. You can do it in 2 engine rotations. ( Cyl 1tdc adjust valves that are closed on the rest of the cylinders, on 6 you’ll have valve overlap, rotate 180 do cyl 6 and the corresponding closed valves)
25:47...Got a solution for this bro. Get some vasoline and fill the cap up and screw on. It keeps air out of the sealant and it don't dry up. It works really well.
Firstly awesome video thanks very much, i purchased a TRX500 last week as a non runner, i have spark, fuel pump works well, injectors seem to have nice spray but i still cant get it to start, feels like i have good compression on the pull start but im going to check compression next and then i thought i should check the valve clearances, anything else you would recomend i check?
Yeah I would try bump starting it. Pull it behind another machine in third gear 2wd. You're probably not getting the engine to turn over fast enough. If it's been sitting for a while it could have a stuck ring. Cycle the key and hit the start button while towing it
Also, you still haven't told me what model it is. I'm assuming it's a foot shift but like there's TRX 500 FM which is foot shift manual and then there's trx500fa which is DCT automatic. You should not pull start a DCT
It's a 2015 TRX500 FM, managed to get it going today with the bump start trick so thanks very much, sounds extremely tappy though so I'm guessing I need to check valve clearances next, and see where to go after that
Awesome video. I having a little trouble getting my 2023 Foreman valves loose. I have gotten it to TDC twice and the valves were not loose, they were very tight. I went ahead and just accepted they were just tight to begin with, so I adjusted them to specs. I haven't gotten it back together yet, Do you think I should go with what I did, or do you have any advice? Thanx!
Not sure if you will answer to me or not but I’m doing mine now great video but I pulled the plug and I’m trying to find tdc but there’s no t on the flywheel or whatever it is can’t seem to get past that part I took the little cover off the back and am using a ratchet
the dealer wants $300 for the first valve adjustment on my 2020 rancher 420 4x4. I’m thinking I’m just going to do it my self after watching your video.
I have adjust valves on my other atv's (and many engines throughout life) but on my 2020 rubicon I am considering taking it in for the 20 hr service just so I don't have to worry about any BS on warranty. Anyone ever had issues with warranty when you performed your own maintenance?
Ok got 3 foremans now but want to build a bike like ya do , i know i gota go ind rear for clearance so what bike am i looking for best year earliest the better as it will be cheaper cause im just gona beat it lol , and rubicon or foreman ?? , got to be foot shift . Love my air cooled bikes for reliability no hoses rad to brake etc but honda had to change it damm , ya got a sub great vids
Great video thanks for that, should this be checked at a certain time? I've a 500 here just coming up to 100hours and will be doing service myself the first one was done by dealership as part of warranty
Did this to mine, followed everything in the video, had a tink before used feeler and all, I put it back together turned it on and it knocked hard as crap turned it off instantly whatd I do wrong???
I have. 250 recon and today I snorkeled it and its1 1/5 inch pvc pipe for the air box and I think it sucks in to much air how, would it be possible to sucks in to much air?
Man I’m having a lot of confusion on lifting my 450 foreman I’m trying to figure out how to get more ground clearance do I need arches a arms and longer axles or what would you recommend I’m running 30s
I watch all your videos I know your a Honda man I considered getting the talon but it just didn’t sit as comfortable as the krx I ended getting the Kawasaki krx 1000 last week have you had a chance to ride one and what do you think about them so far I like it but wish the throttle response was better I made a lill review about it if can check it out and tell me what you think even it’s bad it will be ok too late now done bought it so let’s hear it I respect you opinion just go under brad Bargo krx review
Got a question for ya, I copied everything in this video.. after putting back together. Loud ticking so I don’t understand. I made sure rockers where tight so they don’t come loose ?
@@MudPuppyOffroad yes I made sure T was in middle of circle, first time I did it, and took back apart. The exhaust rocker was loose, second time, I take was loose, third time I made sure I tighten really good. And still ticks
@@michealgray533 Break in maintenance? It's not in the manual, unless I looked over it. Even if it is in the manual I've never heard of doing this for break in maintenance.
Depends we work out bikes hard mega mud heavy track kits and 32/36 inch tyres and we use DCT 520s and pioneers but we have 520 foot shifts for more trail technical climbing like hills and deep valleys when towing and running aggressive tyres
I figured it out but only because I got lucky. The valves were so tight there was no slack. Loosened one slightly then turned it over to the T mark until I felt the slack.
I have an 18 rubicon deluxe with around 100 hours on it, I’ve never done a valve adjustment on it and I’m currently having trouble getting it to fire, but once it does, it runs and idles fine. I’ve already had to replace a starter due it taking so long to fire. Could the valves be the problem?

Yep I’ve got one on my 420 just why not add it to all of them
Just wanted to let you know this this is the best valve set video for these bikes on you tube. Thanks for the step by step and the tips. Made it really easy for me.
Glad it helped!
Excellent, no BS, to the point vid as always Mud Pup. Much appreciated.

It's a four-stroke motor... so there are two top dead centers per four-stroke cycle like every other 4stroke motor

Thank you for taking the time to show us, how to's on are machines your the best!!! Cheers
as a polaris guy, you nailed the torx comment. I’ll be moving over to Honda for my next atv. Love that they still offer a foot shifter model.
Thanks for this video. I took my rnacher to a shop and he charged 75 bucks and the engine was still making noise.
Awesome! Gunna do mine tonight. Thanks for the how-to videos!
I have to do the Valve Adjustment on my Kodiak. Love both Honda’s and Yamaha.

oh and can you if it’s not that inconvenient make a video when you do the top end on the yellow bike
U have taught me a pretty good bit thanks
Let’s go ahead and say this is the longest video and I like the long videos
great video, but wow it sent my vertigo into overdrive 🤣
You should go to busco beach, that would be badass seeing your honda go there

Kind of depends which TRX 500 you have that could refer to several different models over 20 years. I would try bump starting it if you can
Sorry I should've said it's a 2015

Sometimes they feel tight and there really is a little bit of tolerance there. Hard to say but on a new machine like that they should be pretty close
How much did you have to turn the tap
You should have done it before and after startup to hear how bad the ticking is
It wasn't ticking. Just doing the recommended maintenance... Crazy right

ALVIN !!. no longer kept up 🤣🤣
When the valves are set on a honda can you still kind of hear them?
so when i do my top end do i need to front plate off since i can do top dead center that way?
Awesome! Thank you for doing that!
Great video thanks for that, should this be checked at a certain time? I've a 500 here just coming up to 100hours and will be doing service myself the first one was done by dealership as part of warranty
Yeah it should have been done at 20 hours or 100 miles
Check your manual
Cheers man, first service done by honda dealership at 30hours but I will ask was it checked thanks 👍
What pliers did u use for the clips? Thank you
What is that white pipe you have bundled up by the air box?
Question if you have a pull start on the bike could you just pull it over some with the pull cord to get to tdc?
Why do you get the stock Rubicons instead of getting the mud pro ones that already have snorkels and mud tires?
Lol those snorkels are shit.
Where did you order the front bumper? I want a 2020 and was thinking about putting the 2019 bumper on but couldn’t find it to save my life
Aaaaand that’s why I take it to the Dealer….
Did this to mine, followed everything in the video, had a tink before used feeler and all, I put it back together turned it on and it knocked hard as crap turned it off instantly whatd I do wrong???
Chipmunk voice while putting it back together.. lmao
Have you ever had an issue where having a snorkel on the bike to cause the bike to run hot? (More fuel) and cause over carboning on the heads ? Thanks
What's your favorite Honda
You get 'drunk chipmunk' if you play the sped up parts at 0.25X.
Do you run 15w 40 in all your bikes? And have you ever had clutch problems
i love your content bro!
I have. 250 recon and today I snorkeled it and its1 1/5 inch pvc pipe for the air box and I think it sucks in to much air how, would it be possible to sucks in to much air?
Do I need any special tools for a 2019 foreman 500 electric shift?
Man I’m having a lot of confusion on lifting my 450 foreman I’m trying to figure out how to get more ground clearance do I need arches a arms and longer axles or what would you recommend I’m running 30s
You can't do much more than a spacer lift the axles bind up. people get away with it for a while but eventually they fail
Mud Puppy would you say if I’d build my own arched a arms then installed longer than oem axles it would have as much bind?
Do you have a peanut butter addiction? I saw that pallet lol
Does anyone know what the compression should be on a 2017 Honda rubicon IRS 500? I’m only getting 60 on the gauge
Great question for the Patreon page. I don't break out the manual for people on RUclips sorry lol
great video, thanks, 'scribed.
excellent video man

2020 Rancher 420 thinking about getting one for pushing snow, mudding and hunting? Do you recommend?
Shewy 96 if your plowing snow I’d recommend the 520, you’ll want as much hp as you can get
Honda should sponsor you idk why they dont lol
Have you ever rode a Kawasaki bayou?
Got a question for ya, I copied everything in this video.. after putting back together. Loud ticking so I don’t understand. I made sure rockers where tight so they don’t come loose ?

Intake. So gonna try again tomorrow just seeing what I could have done wrong
@@MudPuppyOffroad I seen just a regular T, but then I seen a T with a line and then F under it. Which one do I need to use ?
why did you adjust your valves on the 520?
memeguel break in maintenance

Got a 2017 foreman 500 4x4 sputtering and bogging out half throttle
Can you install a DIFF luck on my four wheeler and if you can find one oh much will you charge me
what filter do you use and what filter and oil would you recomendo for a rzr 900 xp
Factory
Why are u doing it in the first place?
If anyone ever bothered to read the manual about adjustment is part of the first service on every single Honda ATV ever
I have a 99 recon and it’s never been adjusted and she ticks badly
I have a 2016 recon and I have it snorkeled I think it sucks in too much air idktho
what is the little snappy removal tool? snap ring pliers?
Push pin plyers
They are on ebay
17:55 went full chipmunk mode
Agree with you on that
Where do you get your top ends from?
Partzilla
Anyone know of a torque spec for the rear axle hub nut on a 2007 foreman 500 ? Just replaced bearings and couldnt find anything on it
Does fuel tank have to be empty to remove ?
Why do you use shell Rotella?
It's cheap convenience to get my hands on and works
Should I be good with running 29’ Aztecs on a stock 420 ? No gr needed ?
A 420 need to get reduction to turn stock tires properly lol
@mud puppy what is best in a rubicon between dct, foot shift, and electric shift
&dfddcds Ferddrd foot shift
Footshift!

What does the white tubes laying on the airbox fo?
That's my crankcase breather
Mud Puppy I figured just wanted to make sure
That was fast thanks!
I just snorkeled my 300 but every time it goes in water it shuts off but there is no water in oil air box and vent lines
Carburetor vent
Mud Puppy which one is that there are a lot of things that look like vents
Should I get 35 or 33 bkts on my Honda talon can’t find any videos with 35s and dealer ship says I can put 35s
Depends if you actually ride or just put around. 35s will kill the clutches of you ride anything like I do.
Yea Ima gets 33s then I know you would know😂
How do you find TDC if rocker remains tight?
The correct way to do it is to pull the inspection cover on the back of the engine near the stator
I usually put a shish kabob stick in the spark plug hole because I'm lazy
I figured it out but only because I got lucky. The valves were so tight there was no slack. Loosened one slightly then turned it over to the T mark until I felt the slack.
This is 100x harder to do than on a DR650
Hey, do you still have that 86 fourtrax?
Nope
i bet you could do that in the dark!
I can’t decide between the mega Mayham tires and the Kenda Executioner tires can someone tell me if one is better than the other?
Bothse are pretty much trash

Thanks man!
Interested in selling the 2020 grille?
do you have a Rincon 680
