      So far not too many complaints, however my main one is paddle shifters - too small and not enough feedback ('click'). On top of that because they move with the steering wheel, very limited use. Overall it's fair to say that in this department Alfa (with Veloce pack) nailed it.

    I had a 335D 16 plate, so the same engine as that 435D, stage 1 remapped up to around 380 bhp (not dyno'd) and I got a draggy time of 3.2 secs 0-60 🤤🤤🤤 I only got rid as the noise was crappy compared to a petrol and happily traded up for a Mk 7.5 GTI, which wasn't as pokey off the mark, but was definitely a more enjoyable drive with the DSG farts. 🤣 Stage 1 on that took it to where it ought to have been from the factory at 306.5 bhp (from the MAF) and even though it wasn't the Performance model with a diff it was by far the best handling and goning car I've had.

So look out for that folks if you start losing coolant 👍 also a bit of a shock coming from normal cars to this was mine had the m performance brakes and it was a grand for front and rear pads! None of these will do the economy claimed which is the old test figure. Reckon on about 10 less than quoted, 30ish for a golf R and 40ish for a 435 diesel which is extremely good for the power on offer. You might get the quoted combined figure on a run.
    For example my golf 1.5t estate is supposed to do 43 under new system but 52 on old system. It does 42 overall, 37 in town and 53 on a run. I've seen over 60 if I keep my speed down to 65 on motorways. At 150bhp it seems to have plenty of oomph but then my previous car was a Leon ST 1.6tdi with just 115bhp. That was supposed to do 74mpg but really only did about 52 and 58 or so on a run.

    I would suggest using Honest John's "real mpg" database when compiling these lists, I have found it to be very accurate. Much more so than manufacturers specs. For example I have just sold my giulietta qv as on my 115mile daily commute in and out of London it achieves only 30mpg, and this is 90% motorway driving. If it could achieve 40mpg as stated I would have kept it, as it is a very entertaining car IMO. I would suggest the Jaguar XE as a great car for fuel economy under £20k, I had one prior to the Giulietta.

    • @ApothecaryTerry
      @ApothecaryTerry 2 года назад

      Honest John is good, although I feel like people tend to post their stats if they're either pleasantly surprised or disappointed with their MPG. It also doesn't tell you how many submissions it's based on specifically for each version as far as I can spot, just the total per model.
      For example, a 718 Cayman S is on there as getting 23.8mpg yet the GTS apparently gets 31.5mpg. To be honest for all the cars I've owned, I've found that if I drove them gently they invariably matched or beat the official figures. Of course, not driving cars gently ruins that- especially in anything with a turbo, more so than big NA engines, hence why a 981S has no trouble beating any 718 for economy (which I find just a little bit hilarious 😁).

    • @owenwestgate1505
      @owenwestgate1505 2 года назад +1

      @@ApothecaryTerry very true. Obviously driving style plays a bit part. It could be argued it would be a complete waste of time buying any car on this list to poodle around though. Given 90% of my daily commute is spent on the motorway, acceleration is almost irrelevant and in the current climate fuel economy takes priority. If driving at 70 on cruise control results in 30mpg then it's a no go for me.

    • @ApothecaryTerry
      @ApothecaryTerry 2 года назад

      @@owenwestgate1505 It's true that buying a fast car to drive slow doesn't make sense really, but cruising at 65-70 with music on is more fun than doing for me so I tend to value acceleration, handling and also MPG. I also value comfort at speed since my commute is also basically just motorway...I bought my 981CS in lockdown so I could just blast it around the west country instead of commuting 😁 It's (probably) going later this year though, since as of tomorrow I've got to go back 3 days a week.
      Considering how many seriously fast cars get good economy, 30mpg on a motorway would put me off anything too- I'm disappointed if I can't get 40 on a run, 48.1 was my best over 90 miles - did 60 since I like a bit of prog and the album was longer than the journey otherwise!

    Manufacturers mpg figures are an Absolute joke. zero chance of 50mpg out of the 335/435d. 35 is realistic. 330/430d non xdrive can return 40mpg all day long.

      Yeah, I have no idea where they get their figures from, plucked out of thin air it seems. I've always relied on Honest John for more realistic MPG.

      A bit of Googling tells me the UK is really not a bad place for car thefts at all. Depending on whose stats you trust, the rate is anything from 90-170 thefts per 100k people. For comparison: Italy, Sweden and France all have around 250 car thefts per 100k people.

    Getting a 320d as my first car because university is a 2 hour motorway drive away. Then going to work on the weekends is another 30 minute motorway drive (store transfer) has pretty good fuel economy and will still drive fast without the massive insurance premiums since it's a 2.0 you will pay more than your standard 1 litre corsa shit box. But atleast it won't struggle on the motorways.

    "Who doesn't want a fast estate"
    Me. I don't like estates in general, but even more so the fast ones. Estates to me are "dad cars" meant so people can do ikea shopping and drop off their offspring at school, and having more than 220 bhp in a car like that doesn't seem reasonable to me. I know people have different tastes and many car enthusiasts are into that, but I'm not one of these guys.

      There's a lot to be said for having a car that can make you smile while also being capable of dropping off a sofa. If you have kids / dogs / etc and budget for a single car it makes a lot of sense instead of running 2+ cars with different characteristics. Saab 9-5 HOT Aero, Audi RS6 Avant are some perfect examples of sensible monsters.

      My 2018 GTI was awesome! Make sure you get the DSG and maybe a Performance model if you can find one for that money. I reluctantly sold as there was £3500 equity in it. Also only get one if you plan to remap it as they're really underwhelming with the standard power. The remap brought it to life in my opinion.
