In this video we will show you:
How to prepare your own custom graphic
How to apply the graphic to your deck
How to finish your deck to preserve the graphic
There are 5 steps to create your own custom skateboard graphic.
1. Create and print your own board graphic
2. Prepare your deck and the graphic for application
3. Apply your graphic to your deck
4. Remove paper material and reveal your graphic
5. Finish your board with varnish for better result and longer lasting graphic.
Tools:
Skateboard deck
LaserJet printer (Inkjet won't work!!)
Regular paper
Matte Gel (available in any art store or online)
Brush
Spunge
Transparent varnish or lacquer.
How To:
Create your graphic in Illustrator, Photoshop or any other graphic design software. Make sure your canvas is the size of 3x A4 lined up in landscape mode. After your graphic is done, flip the canvas horizontally (else your graphic will be mirrored) and print it using a LaserJet printer.
Cut of the white edges around your graphics that most printers will leave you with. And then make sure your graphics line up properly before you continue.
Apply the Matte Gel to your deck and cover the entire area where your want to apply your graphic to. Make sure your spread the gel evenly or you will end up with "holes" in your graphic.
Now put your graphic on the board, facing down with the print on the Matte Gel covered surface. It's best to start in the middle and the line up the outer papers. The nicer you line up your graphic, the nicer the end result will be. Use your hands to smoothen out the paper so you don't end up with bubbles. Spots where the paper (and graphic) are not touching the board will end up as empty spaces. You don't want that.
Leave the whole thing dry for about 5 hours. You could always let it dry for a few hours more just to be safe.
Now take a slightly moist spunge and start wetting the paper. Don't overdo it with the water!! Else the result will be very "watery". Now gently keep scrubbing the paper with the spunge until the paper starts crumbling off. Be carefull not to scrub to hard or you will damage or take off the graphic as well. It's best to be patient during this step. You can keep scrubbing until all paper residu is removed. It's easiest when the spunge is slightly moist and in the end you can use your hands to wipe of the paper.
Now your graphic should be transferred to the board pretty nicely already.
To preserve your graphic and keep it from scratching off to easily apply a transparent varnish or coating. This will also improve the colors a little bit!
Let it dry and you're all done!! Now you can go skate your own pro model skateboard.

This would be cool with vintage ads and comics or posters
Exactly the reason I search and found this video haha I was thinking us ww2 propaganda posters
Could be sick tho you could make blanks and sell the ones you don’t use
@@novemberoscar98 YES!
I'm gonna try to to the vintage tony hawk design.
@@novemberoscar98 That's a really good idea. I was thinking garbage pale kids or something from goosebumps.
This is fucking awesome, i now have a deck themed around 80’s comic books
Now I have the ability to rip off RipnDip decks for a fraction of the cost.
Thanks!
Huskie or supreme
loll dats sat I doing
This is such a game changer, thank you so much!
Imma bout to do this. I’ve been planning for months!!! Im excited yet scared😂
Wow! It's a lot easier than I thought it would be.
Good to hear that! ✌🏻
I came here to learn something but I got a hell of a lot more with these tasty ass jams
Dude this video is epic first and foremost. If i have a deck with a clear varnish on the bottom side should i sand it all off first, or is it ok like that? And where can i get this matte gel?
Thanks man!! There is no need to sand your board first. This technique will work even if there is already a varnish on your deck. :)
The matte gel should be available at pretty much any art supplies or other arts and crafts store.
Good luck!
Thanks man keep up the good work
hey thanks for sharing it worked great!
mate this video is pure legitness! helpful as fuck and I love that graphic!!! might scrape some money together as I have all sorts of ideas for this. music, guitars.ect. cheers
Thanks man! Glad to hear the video was usefull for you. :)
So cool! A similar technique is used for making and applying graphic designs on a guitar.
can u give specific measurements that you used to make your graphic ?
I want to try this on my blank deck I just got, really hope it turns out
Did you try it, and if so, how did it turn out?
Proxy LDO I did try it, it came out perfectly. Just be ready for a lot of scrubbing to remove the paper after it soaks
Thanks for such a quick reply! Just wanted to know if someone had tried this themselves and how it turned out. About to make a mini cruiser out of an old trick board, and wanted to redo the deck design.
would it work on a board that was just lightly painted black before?
ItzPugs if you sand it down first I don't see any problem
turned out really good thx!!
Really great video bro, I don't understand what's the matte gel?
im gunna do this during my school holiday, so exited
YES!
thank you
Man that's so awesome. Thanks
Definitely would try this :D
where did you buy the transparent varnish and what was it called
Also, if I were to use a deck that has been stained (blue, green, red etc...) I read that it doesn't not need to be sanded. Do you think it would still have a clean transfer on the ink? Or would the stain effect the color of the ink applied using this technique?
and when you put the image on will it start peeling off?
Love this! I just print out vinyl, but looks amazing!
Does it stay on the deck like his does ??
@@dillydilly19 It's gotten a little dirty from mud, but nothing's peeled off. For ref: It's been about a year with it on & I don't skate THAT often.
If I print only on the centre of the paper (like a logo)
does the white from the paper will be transfered to the board or the wood patern will still be visible?
Nice bro it looks like it saves u money u can have what u won't and u can do it ur self I say people should watch this and do it this way
how will this save u money? nobody gives a fuck about the graphic, it will grind of in an hour. you should look up griptape art, its also a great way to see which side the nose is and which side the tail
+Tim Klepper no one fucking cares about the grip tape I would fucking dark slide that off in a hour lol shut the fuck up
+Aiden Shellenberger haha why would u darkslide fucking stupid
+Tim Klepper why wouldn't you
+Aiden Shellenberger because it fucks up your griptape. it isnt made to grind
Thank's bro it really help's me out
You are welcome! :)
Does it actually work?
Plzz make more videos!!!
Hey lqd can you explain how to split the one image into three sheets it’s killing me I can’t figure it out.
You can use software like Photoshop (free trial on the Adobe website).
Dude, this is awesome!!
I'm really looking forward to try this
I wonder how it's held up.
Depending on the varnish and usage, generally pretty good!!
Is there a certain kind of clear finish I should use? Or can I just use polyurethane
If you plan to try this I recommend using a pro model with good shape, and sanding the graphic away. It might be better to skate then a blank.
Pro models started out as blanks before they got printed. Our LQD "Blank Canvas" decks would be a great board to use for this printing technique.
do you have to add a varnish on it?
It’s advised to make the graphic last longer ✌🏻
Don't ride. Don't skate. Cool vid
if the deck is already painted a certain colour, will that effect the outcome of the actual image?
Dude, why has no one replied to your comment! I have the same question😂
Wondering the same thing but probably not
nah it wont because the image is like an extra layer
It does I just did it with a pink board and if your image is white or lighter it will be the color or at least a slight hue
Do you sand it first or is it fine to do over just a fresh blank deck???
This is an epic graphic, could you reply with the links for the three graphics if you have them? Also, if there’s already a design should that be removed first/how?
This is great going to do this on my next build!!
that was sick!!
sick idea, just wondering did you use photoshop to crop the image across 3 A4 pages or was it just a panorama from an iPhone?
You can do both. But it’s adviced to use some photo editing software to frame the photo properly and also flip the image to make sure it transfers properly.
Thanks a lot, I will try that on my new board
would liquitex medium matte gel work or is it not the same thing
It should work!
can i use regular pva glue instead of do i have to have the matte gel
No, you have to use the gel as glue is a completely different composition.
im kinda late but, do i have to remove the existing graphic first?
Nice video thank you
I do have to use a specific printer or can I use any kind
It has to be a laser printer.
Can you use inkjet? I really wanna do this but idk if I can
no
Would this work on a longboard with fiber glass?
If you already have a graphic or paint on the board, should you sand it off first and then add your graphic or is it okay to leave it? Also would sanding it off be the correct method to remove it?
You could do both, depending on the “look” you’re going for.
Remember that if your new design has white in it, those white parts become transparant. In that case you can still see your old graphic through it a bit.
Sanding is fine, as long as you’re not sanding too deep and damage the bottom wood ply.
If the design is something I drew and used markers to color, will this work??
I think this has to do with the ink from the print, so I think you should scan your illustration then print it
Hello! How can I find that "mate gel"? I tried on internet and I just got some stuff for nails. Is there a brand that sells it?
Yair Olvera there are a few brands that sell it. But your best bet would be to try an art supplies store. They should have it!
Same as mod podge which should be in most arts and crafta stores
I just posted a time-lapse of a graphic I drew, it took me 8 hours to record and 5 to edit both parts.. I really wish I knew about this earlier! :P
But helpful anyway, so thanks!
but dose it work
EPIC ! Does it need to be a totally blank or it could be a blank (dipped black) board , if I want to print just like a small photo in it... Thanks for the video, it is awesome!
I spray painted the board black and want to do this method by applying a picture in the middle of the board. Will it still show on the black design or does it need to be another color/only wood (no color)?
If the graphic had words and was from left to right if the board was standing up vertical, the graphic used, would have to be mirrored correct?
Yes, that's correct :)
This is so fucking awesome! ..my mind is blown away lol
If i display it as an art piece will the image last forever, or will it fade over time?
It depends on if your paper and ink are light fast. If it is, you shouldn't have a problem. If they aren't, try to keep them out of direct sunlight.
Where did you get the pictures and how did you print them to line up?
Does the paper rip off when u put trucks on?
Thanks for posting this video, this is really helpful. Does the graphic need to be freshly printed? How long can it be printed before I put it on the board?
Not 100% sure about this, but I guess the print doesn't have to be freshly printed. The reaction of the gel on the paper with ink should still be the same :)
How much gel per deck? Trying to figure out how many can I do with 8oz. Thanks! Super sick
Looks good! I did a tutorial for you guys looking for how to do it on photoshop
lets say i pre ainted the board white and just want one picture in the middle, do i only need to prep the middle and the one sheet of paper is fine? or does it have to go on top of bare wood
Yes, that should work!
Did you sand your deck at all before you put the gel on it?
No, you don't have to sand the board :)
I used matte gel to get the graphic on used an acrylic varnish, then coloured over parts where the graphic didn't take so it looked whole. What kind or kinds of varnish should I use so I can preserve the original graphic plus sharpie? (Regular and paint pen sharpies)
thats awesome is it worth doing it how expensive is jet ink? and also how expensive are the tools, really trying to do this thanks
please give me a estimate on how many decks i can do with 1 set of all tue parts u sed thanks
Thanks alot i see some poeple who do it on ebay and they sell the decks for under 30or 30
+LxTxSURGE you could do something like this as a hobby thing and sell them locally too.
Hi great video,thanks....
can you use a digital print
It works only with laser printed graphics.
How long will the graphic last
It’s depending on the usage. But it should be roughly the same as any other skateboard graphics.
Does the board require a clear coat prior to the graphic being placed for this technique to work
I have medium matte gel already but Can I use ink jet printer rather than laser printer? It seem pretty hard to find laser printer in my area. Help
No, this only works with a laser printer unfortunately. 😅
I had a bit of trouble with wiping the paper off, the ink layer started brushing off too. Any way I could contact you for a bit of help? I'd be more than happy to compensate you for your time brotha!
Can I do this on any surface? not just a wooden skateboard deck?.. like a plastic surface?
+Matt Graham for sure on all wooden surfaces. Plastic, I’m not sure.
If there is no ink on part of the design I printed out will it show as white on the board or will the paper just wash away?
The paper will just wash away and on your board it will also show up without ink (transparent).
can i do it with a ink jet printer
my deck colour is pure white because i repaint it, how i do it? should i sand off my deck into blank first, or just doing what you do on the video?
Yo thanks now I’m gonna put Pablo Escobar outside the White House on a deck
Is there a way to make it shiny like vinyl and does it come off easy like say if you boardslide
You can add a (or multiple) layers of glossy varnish.
What kind of paper is being used? Like an image printed on a home printer?
Why matte gel could we use other glue that also turns transparent?
Could you do this over the old graphic or do you have to sand it off?
You can do this over the old graphic, but the result would be better if you sand the board first. The white parts in your new graphic will be transparent, so it’s nicer if there is plain wood underneath.
LQD skateboards ok thanks!
would a fuji xerox printer work Thanks
So would it work with just regular printer and regular printer paper?
Hey this is really cool. I'm just wondering how does the paper wipe off but not the graphic? Does the ink stain in to the matte gel? Thanks
+Paul Hawkins that’s the magic ;)
Hey could you answer my question? Do we have to use a laserjet printer on order for this to work?
Caroline Cady yes you do :)
My mind is blown
How long would it take for the design to come off
Depends on your skating and the type of clear coat finish you use. With a quality (strong) clear coat the graphic can last longer than an original board graphic.
no idea if i’ll get a reply but would this work for transferring onto spray paint or the like? or does it have to be the bare wood
hey does it have to be blank? lets say my board already has some art on it could I cover it?
Where did u get pics? And u didn't say anything about the varnish do we clean that off to or let just dry??
how many layers on top of the graphic during the varnishing
One question, how did you get your graphics into 3 sheets ?
Best to use Photoshop for this. Set your canvas to appr. 21cm x 90cm and it should cover your entire board. Wider boards should possibly have the graphics printed portrait mode instead of landscape mode.
+LQD skateboards wider boards like what size cuz I have a 8.125 should I use landscape or portrait
+SkateboardManiac For 8.125 size it's probably best to play it safe and go for portrait. Landscape might be tricky on this one.
What if I don't have photoshop?
Jordan McHighlander You could try using Paint on Windows 10 if you have that or just Photos, both of which come with Windows 10. If used both of them for cropping things and stuff like that, hope that helps.
Will it pill off ?
I really want to learn how to make a skateboard
is laserjet a different type of printing or does regular printer ink work just the same??
+Amber Lea has to be laser printer
So it can only be a laser jet not ink jet?
Which blank decks should I use
Any
dudeeeeee i have to try thissssssssss
