- Midnight Oil perform 'The Dead Heart', live at Ellis Park, South Africa in 1994. Originally featured on the album 'Diesel and Dust'. Written by Rob Hirst, Jim Moginie and Peter Garrett.
Having steadfastly refused to play in South Africa whilst in the grip of apartheid, this concert is a celebration of the inauguration of Nelson Mandela in front of a packed Ellis Park Stadium in Johannesburg during 1994.

I play this whenever the politicians of the world piss me off wihh inevitable media overload (quite often these days). Watching Rob Hirst hit the perfect beat, all smiles and just living that moment lifts my spirit no end. I can now face the world again, tut loudly and wish I was back seemly Victorian era of communication. The 90's.

Same here.... I decided, since they listen to all the cr*** these days, that every morning when I bring them to school I let them get to know some real music... Beds are burning, bullroarer, they all sings them buy heart. The kids are 6 and 10... My daughter asks: put on something from the bald man 🙂

That didgeridoo opening their set that night cannot be described. What an amazing concert. One felt the music just as much as heard it. Such amazing memories this brings back - thank you!!

Im a Kiwi and got say there are some absolutely awesome Ausi bands from the 80's and 90's, Midnight Oil, Icehouse, Hunters and Collectors, Jimmy Barnes, Inxs, the list goes on, cheers !
Some of the best Aussie bands are actually Kiwis lol, Split Enz, Crowded House, Mi Sex, Noiseworks and the list goes on.

saw these guys in a small venue masonic temple in toronto. maybe 1500 people . but the energy they put out could light up a city.
I'm from Belgium and have been following him for over 30 years. the lyrics against the Australian minority .I hope he goes back into politics and continues to sing

Very few bands can do politics and at the same time transcend politics and just be a great band. The Oils, Steve Earle, not many others. U2 on a good day (and I love U2 but they get pretty preachy on their politics -- The Oils just make you feel it and believe it.) Great performance.
