John plays:
Pearl Drums
Sabian Cymbals
Vic Firth Sticks
I had the opportunity to take snare drum lessons with John for a semester at North Texas in the 80s. As a sax player I was allowed to take percussion lessons in place of woodwinds class. John was an excellent teacher and pushed me to be as good as I could be. It was all about rudiments, confidence, and musicality. Glad to see him here on RUclips.

Another great lesson from Drumeo - so much more inside Edge
Thanks from Brazil!
thanks alot!
Was that a Pearl Reference kit? What was that snare drum? Sounded great. Thank you!
This is a great lesson because it addresses the building blocks we use to create a beat or a fill. It's not trying to copy a fancy fill or something someone else improvised.
The creative process is all ours.
Once again nailed it guys!
Thank you so much..
He is an Expert.smooth as butter,so relaxed.i dont even have words for his technique.when he was young in the drum corps,he played and practiced over 10 hours a day.
Smooth as butter! John Wooton is one of the best teachers on Drumeo, his lessons are always fun, especially the applications of the rudiments
"In art, you don't play by the rules. You play with the rules." The rudiments are the rules.
Love that quote. The basic stuff always bites you in the ass if you did NOT learn the basic stuff.
Yes. It is really funny that it really is that simple. But yeah, I hear ya, I am merely saying that if you learn the rules, then you can later play with them... And how I want that Great Hands for a Lifetime book...
Well said RT.
Resonant Totality whats your social media name ? Ig ,fb ?
AYE!
Southern Mississippi To The Top! I was fortunate to be at USM, finishing up a bachelor's in another instrument, when John arrived as the percussion professor. Musician first, drummer second. So glad he stayed at USM, and to run across him here.
He's so cool and calm
Didn't know of John Wooten before but I have never heard such sublime execution of strokes around the kit! Thanks for sharing :)
One of the blessings of something you tube is discovering people like John Wooton, Rick Beato, Aimee Nolte, and Adam (a little pompous, but very informative) Neely. All of these people are a tremendous resource for study.
My first music lesson was at Hirzels' music store, games, hobbies. My first snare drum was a Christmas present to me when I was 6 years old.
This is SO GOOD. Every young drummer, or ANY drummers who don't have their rudiments together should really study this. Hell, drummer who DO have their rudiments in order should check this out. This the sort of foundational learning that will provide techniques, ideas, and musicality your entire life. Man, I wish I would have had access to this material when I was a kid. Incredible.
four types of paradiddles:
standard = RLRR LRLL
inverted = RLLR LRRL (named inwards for the sake of memorizing the list)
reverse = RRLR LLRL
outwards = RLRL LRLR
it's a permutation: your sticking order is still the same only you are starting on a different note each time.
Rlrr lrll rllR lrrl rrlr llRl rlrl lRlr with the captialized R being the start of the standard paradiddle.
I thought only chords could be inverted for a long time after I started playing the drums I realized rhythms could be too!
This is the best and most engaging rudiment lesson I've ever seen, well done
Thanks for this. I first caught John with the Vic Firth rudiment videos. They are some of the best on the internet as far as explaining the four main strokes on a snare drum
I think he did a rudimental ram, maybe
What a great teacher.
A great drummer and friend, said hi to John
My first introduction of John Wooton, and I have been really missing out. His demeanor is fabulous, and his drumming as well. I will be paying close attention to this wonderful musician. Thanks and Blessings!!!
That kit is gorgeous!
I went into this unable to fathom the paradiddle variations, after breaking it down, and slowing it down, I was able to throw it down! I got all the exercises except the last one. Need work on my Swiss army triplets and single flam mills (just learned what mills are) but I know I'm gonna get that last exercise soon. Thanks Dr. Throwdown!
So you watched the whole video? That is so rare these days. Congratulations.
it's the origin of drumming, this should be done by every drummer.. understanding the root.
I just bought your DVD book and the rudiment spiral book. Thanks for the introduction. I share your approach to "play music, not rudiments" and have always practiced with music. My wall occurred when I couldn't really place the rudiments into a song, so I hope your DVD/Play Along Songs will help me incorporate things more efficiently.
Woot! One of my favorite coaches on Drumeo! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ - Kristeta
I could listen to that snare all my life
shantam kafle Agreed. Absolutely beautiful tone
you have some good stuff in your channel. best of luck
shantam kafle Much appreciated. It's a good start anyway! 😉
Whelan Drums best of luck. happy drumming :)
shantam kafle Much Appreciate will do. Keep in touch buddy
so awesome you guys have him on!! I've watched all his Vic firth videos.
this guy has pure control over his notes
Thanks John! That's so cool; the lick that uses bounced strokes (Swiss Triplets, Flammed Mills, and Flam taps) and then changes to controlled strokes (Flam accents, Flam paradiddles and Inverted Flam Taps), just blew my mind! Those rudiments make much more sense to me now. Thanks again.
What a phenomenal teacher!
To all drummers, listen to everything Wooten says about the four strokes. This is the most important thing you will ever learn about stick control. You might be bored because he isn't trying to show off, but he is one of the best teachers in the world. He is also one the most efficient players ever.
Chris Morgan for real!! I just got back from a three day drumline camp that he taught at and those strokes were the only way that I could play any of the stuff he had us play. Had I not utilized them, I would have never been able to do it
time stamp?
Love this! I recently started playing and have been looking for a way to make the rudiments more fun. Great lesson!
“Break it down. Slow it down, to throw it down.” 😂🙌🥁
I love it!
16:27 "break it down, slow it down, and throw it down"
Here's ancient for ya. When I started playing, there were 13 rudiments. Now they say there are upwards of 40. The only problem with that is, these 27 new "rudiments" are combinations of the original 13. Rudiment means basic, or fundamental. So when you combine rudiments, you no longer have a basic rudiment, you have combined rudiments. An example is a flamaque, which is the combination of a flam with a ratamaque. This is no longer a rudiment, it is a combination. Same with a flamadiddle, or flam paradiddle. It's a paradiddle that starts with a flam instead of a single stroke. hell, a paradiddle is a combination of 2 sigle strokes combined with a double stroke. That is where ALL drumming comes from. Combining rudiments into patterns that are pleaseing and fit the rest of the music.
1) Nard 13 didn't include the single stroke roll.
2) Some of the 13 rudiments were combinations, not rudiments, by your standards (for example: six stroke roll, seven stroke roll, flam accent, FLAM PARADIDDLE...yes, it was one of the 13 rudiments !!!).
4) Just out of curiosity, when did you start playing ? I'm asking because, as far as I know, the rudiments were already 26 by the mid 1930's.
I just bought two of his books 📚 Rudimental Remedies and The Drummer's Rudimental Reference Book. I love his audio tracks in his Rudimental Remedies book.
I’m a newbie drummer and in love with the beat he plays at 13:10
LEARN. WOW 👌 👏 Thank You 👍 🙌
Great stuff Mr. Wooten & Drumeo..
Can you let us know what the name of the track you used at 36:53...or where to find it? Not sure if it has only been personally created for your book tracks or for this lesson? Thanks much!! Look forward to your comment!
Drumeo--HOW was this kit mic'd up? Please comment...this is one of the best sounding kits ever, especially that bass drum
That’s a Pearl for you. Their the best.
amazing lesson...Thanks!
Dr. has a great way to talk and teach on the drums, but also has real funny comments. Must be a great guy to talk to.
In Vic Firth rudiment lessons You used to look like a robot in Charlie Chaplin Films. Finally, I see you come to alive. Anyway, thank you for the lessons.
Dynamics wizard! Wow!
In what year did a grace note become a ghost note? Probably around the time the bass drum became the kick drum, drum set became the drum kit?
no joke, these tunes are all bangers
Very clever and cool lesson - Thank's -
Another legend... Drumeo is the fucking best. :)
Did he just say the F-word, on the internet?
Damn son, better call the internet police.
Keep in mind that your young audience knowns way more curse words than you do. You're not protecting anyone.
Holy fuck Bruce, you're so fucking right, I'm so fucking sorry.
;)
😒
Carlos Augusto Scalassara Prando attitude man... you think that you're cool if you're saying that F'words, but you're not. Naaah...
Awesome Woot-iments
Thanks I'm learning
This guy. what a master
Fantastic lesson!!!! Learned a lot and will def. practice these things. Lovin' it!
how nice are those shells damn
Johnny boy! This dude's been rocking Vic's 40 rudiments for a minute and it's great to see him on here.
This is such a great lesson. My favorite part was for sure being inspired to play paradiddles and the molar being called the "common sense" stroke.
Moeller stroke no molar! After the first guy who played that way! was his name Moeller.
This is something all those drummers who only play chops should watch
Best drumming lesson I’ve ever had .. I’m confined fighting Covid Virus in Europe people are dying and this stuff gives me a reason to fight for life just to learn them mutherfuckers !!
Awesome lesson
This kit sounds AMAZING...perfect BD mic'ing! i have not heard a kit sound this good mic'd up in a long time...that bass drum is sick!
His crazy army is what Gadd opens with...and the feel is missing...just saying the difference between pure marching and musical expression has a gap...drum corp to kit is a different skill...this guy is great for jingles and precision drumming. Watch Gadd play the exact same tune on the PASIC 95 video and you will feel the difference
True, ambition is to play like Gadd. But I'm not scared to play like me either.
There is a great book about morphing written by David Panlz. It's a real must have.
very nice video, I like it.
the master!
Great lesson......now what is a rudiment 😅
plays on drumset still remains faithful to marching snare epicc
I started drumming due to Rock Band. Now after coming back to drums years later, I realize than I learned drums all wrong and my skills were unevenly developed. Even though I could play pretty complex syncopated beats, I do not know any of the rudiments and can barely play a double stroke roll. So I Have a lot of work to do now to get better...
How are you getting on mate? I know I'm a stranger on the internet, but as a complete beginner (less than 2 weeks), I'm interested to see and hear how other people are progressing.
wow that so cooollll
the demo musical ( Afro music ) is it from a song or you made it up ?
Please have Danny Carey on.
👽👽👽
I want that snare...
The common sense stroke is a far better explanation than the moeller ( under the intellectual microscope 🔬) in drumming techniques simplify the sometimes over complicated style of drum tuition
You look nothing like your brother Victor, but you got mad skills too!
Brother from another mother.
the rudiment master
Awesome
Really nice lesson!
Great video as usual Drumeo...I'm trying to find John Wooton on some recordings but having a bit of trouble. What groups has he played with so I can check out some of his live work? Thanks!
inverted flam taps are punk! career opportunities, all the young guns et
bravissimo complimenti, ma il fraseggio e di steve gad. molto bello complimenti
Could somebody explain what he means by "articulation" at 12:08? It seems to relate to the fact that a rhythm naturally sounds subtly different when played with different stickings. But I thought we were supposed to try to get both limbs to sound the same.
i think he means the accent is naturally altered depending on where the diddle is mostly. itll just happen naturally
20:40 you came for this
you guys should get another marching drummer on here
hey Drumeo when are you gonna have on the master Lars Ulrich??
The word "master" and "Lars Ulrich" should not be in the same sentence
Propably never. Only GOOD Drummers are on Drumeo.
Dammit somebody just invent that Matrix shit already so I can download this into my head and be done
I didnt read the title at first cause I thought he was Vinnie Colaiuta. 😅 I love his style and teachings though!
Not bad for a John Wooton
Hahahahahaha
@@johnwooton I just bought my first kit at 60. Hope to match your skills one day.
Dr. Throwdown
The Bob Ross of drumming.
reads the title:
*cries in Thomas Lang
“Don’t play rudiments, play music “
Proceeds to play nothing but rudiments.
OHHHHHHH Steve Gadd. good choice
yes he,s GOD ,can hear it
Check out Grade 1-2 Scottish Pipe Band drumming. This is no comparison. Disregard the St Patrick’s Day pipe band amateurs, as there are 10 levels above that level.
Love his gags lol
I didn't know Christoph Waltz was a drum god
Isnt that a Steve Gad solo from a buddy rich memorial at the begining?
crazy army is Gadd's go-to for over 30 years
Dci wow
at 37 mins ID?
HAHA! I love his cheesy comments
Dear Maestro Wooton! I've missed a lesson whit him because of a train strike! I hope to meet him next time
It’s so weird seeing him behind a drum set 😂
The rudiments should have been played slowly to provide a clear understandable lesson. It's no question that he can play them, himself. A teacher must play at different temples.
Subtitles..please! :/
Study English, please.
Crazy army was good but know one makes its feel as god dam good as gadd. Something special about his touch even the wooton is probably technically better
I think John Wooton and Thomas Lang could be the same person dun dun dun!!!😂😂😂
I need to hit the gym.
