I saw it when it came out, and the same weekend my radio station played the whole album on the album review *and* did a special where they interviewed Bob Geldof about it. I can't say it's my fave from '79 as I find it hard to choose, but "Three Imaginary Boys" which is the Cure's debut record is a classic to me. I'm surprised it gets kinda overlooked in favour of their later material. However, there's some genuinely brilliant teen angst driven tunes on there. Especially stuff like "Fire in Cairo" and, 10:15 Saturday Night" . Really makes me yearn for a biopic film based on it.

“WHAAAAT??!!” A great episode; those pedals have a life and tone of their own... the flanger was particularly sweet and luscious! 1979’s albums? Umm... Joe’s Garage by Zappa is a choice cut, but The Wall is the bomb! The obvious biggies aside, Goodbye Blue Sky, Don’t Leave Me Now and Nobody Home are emotive and powerful tracks.
I remember these when I first started playing in the 80’s. I also remember buying “The Wall” for my older sister’s birthday, I think I bought a Zeppelin album for her as well on that birthday? I was 10 in ‘79 and the youngest of four, so music was the glue that kept us close and together. Nice throwback!
The chorus and the delay both look like they have knobs for input level, is that because they were using the same bucket-brigade circuitry or something?

Pretty much the first pedal I bought last year actually was a guyatone chorus, but the mc3 micro thingy, guess that's from a later series. Found it in a pawn shop in athens on vacation, then I found another pedalshop there and so in the end I went home broke but very happy. The guyatone remains on the board and I love it and I've been waiting on a guyatone episode. Normally I never comment on YT videos, but since I'm convinced I have always been in quarantine by now, why not. Love the content, cheers! Also sorry for rambling
Awesome I have been helping my old man (who is a retired luthier) clean out his workshop and just found a full set of these still in their boxes. Just jumped on RUclips to search them and found this video
When I was 11 or 12, in 1991or 2, I had been listening to the requisite Pop of the day all throughout elementary school. My three tapes at that point were (in order) Michael Jackson-Thriller, Belinda Carlisle-Heaven Is A Place On Earth, and Paula Abdul-Forever Your Girl. (In hindsight I also had the "Cocktail" soundtrack) Then I found a basket of old cassettes dubbed from record that my Dad's buddy who had a great record collection made for him as payment for a poker debt. The first one I pulled out said only "The Wall." I popped it in (miraculously on side one), listened to the needle crackle for a few long seconds before the first chord hit, and INSTANTLY became a teenager. The solo in "Mother" is the sole reason I begged for an electric guitar that Christmas. I still haven't learned it.
I've been waiting for this one! My first pedal was a zoom box distortion which I got for free with a second hand guitar. I loved it, has great tone, a real gem.
I own the PS-109 since I purchased it sometime between 1977 -1981 or was it 1983 -1989, hum that was while stationed in Japan. Still works great and still one of my favorite Pedals. Thanks for presenting this series of Pedals. The major choices were the Ibanez, Elk, Maxon and Guyatone series.
I love Guyatone, I've been chasing their pedals and amps for months, if not years. I abandoned the idea of getting a Funky Box from their Flip series but just happily purchased a PS-025 Touch Overdrive. Can't wait for your take on Pearl pedals now.
Thank you for this episode. "The Wall" is indeed a fantastic record, also when it comes to guitar tones. My favorite song happens to be the guitarless "Nobody Home". My favorite 1979 song would be "Message in a Bottle" by The Police.
Firstly this is my favorite shirt that you have put on your body. Garments. Secondly guyatone have a special place in my heart. I was homeless, penniless, painfully depressed and my drummer came down with FMS😳 Dark times. Scounged up 7$ for a pack of strings went to my local hoke in the wall music shop. And through the Arias and epiphones I found a hidden gem...a guyatone st2 compressor/sustainer for $43.95 and I needed it😬 I traded an ibanez soundtank distortion and like 20$. Changed my life forever.
Josh, I'm really digging the Kona shirt. I have an early 90's (1996) Kona MuniMula (Aluminum frame) that I have grafted a Girven springer front fork to run by a Shimano gearset. It's a fine ride that still draws attention. Now as for 1979 that was a good music year, Supertramp's Breakfast in America came out in 79 along with Pink Floyd's The Wall, and Michael Jackson's Off the Wall but I was kind of a punky kid in 79 (I was 13) so The Clash's London Calling and Joy Divisions Unknown Pleasures was circling my turntable back then. Hope you and yours are keeping healthy and safe, thanks for the videos!!!
Truly obsessed with this album possibly the only reason I watch this and many other pedal and guitar related channels , trying to chase that tone of Gilmour
the Knobs on these are blowing my mind from a design standpoint. something really classy unique at least by what we see a lot now. the taper and the scaled back chicken head like demarkation. And got this pointed around the point of the Obsessive about fine details section hahaha
Thanks for the video, I lol'ed multiple times during it. Definitely made the day a little brighter. Keep up the good work! For a song from 1979, lets go with Hey Hey, My My (Into the Black).
yeah! I got the zoom distortion. amazing but I had to change the stomp as the led was just activated when in tension, the opamp died so I put a socket to play with different ones and despite the same circuit, it sounds different from the MXR D+. warmer, more powerful and smoother distortion grain. I love it.
Debut album from B52s came out in 1979, The crazy quirky guitar by Ricky Wilson (RIP) blew the minds of many musicians. That riff from Rock lobster wont get out of my head.
Wire released 154 in 1979, so that settles the best LP of 1979 question. I had the Rolly Box, but gave it to an electronics engineer friend to repair and never saw it again. My memory isn't perfect, but I'm pretty sure it wasn't called Phase Sonix (maybe just Phase or Phaser). Could there be even more variations on the Rolly out there? Did they keep tweaking it as it never really sounded like a Phaser?
there exists a lot of mij script logo phase tone pedals. ive seen maxon, ibanez and other brands that all have a eerily similar vibe. maybe some old japanese company had a bunch of phase tones and branded them out to a different companies?
Been watching a lot of your videos Josh and I have to say they are a joy and full of great info! But I would like to see more bass specific products from JHS cause I would love to support your company!
I have a (broken) Guyatone Micro overdrive. I love the way the simple stamped bodies and the rubber band that seals the back. I just wish they used better quality input jacks.
You finally have one album in your collection that I have too. Regarding the 2 identical model numbered Guyatone phase shifter...what you have with the newer set of the Guyatone pedals is a completed collection of the 1979 series. What you have with the older script lettered pedal is one of an entirely older series of which Guyatone made a limited number...more than prototypes, less than full production runs...more like a run of samples/demos to test the waters. I was in my teens in the mid ‘70’s hanging out at the local music shops. I wanted to learn to play guitar and needed to see what I wanted in order to save money because my parents thought it was a waste of money. I remember both of those pedals being in the pedal case at one shop and what I related is the account I recall when I asked about the pedals and the differences.
Boxes & manuals? HOLY SHIT BATMAN! Lol. My home city of Liverpool U.K.has an absolute full on love affair with Pink Floyd going back years. You can even hear Liverpool fans chanting & singing on the track fearless from Meddle but you already know that! Of course you do Josh. Great stuff as always & stay safe with all this COVID 19 bollocks.Cheers lads.
I was born in ‘79 and always thought it’d be cool to have some gear from that year. I recently got a ‘79 Fender Champ, which I love. It’d be great to get a couple of these pedals to go with it. I’ve been interested in 250/Distortion + type pedals for a while, so the Zoom Distortion is the one that grabbed my attention. London Calling is my favorite album from ‘79, but there are so many other good ones: Gang of Four, the Specials, Tom Petty, the Police, George Harrison, the Plugz, etc...
By the time you got to the crossover box, I was going wah wah wah, cuz I only have some of the micro series, now I want ,sorry "need" these ones too, and I should probably buy more micro ones too. This show always seems to cost me, but I can't stop watching.
Thank you for showing your Universe, you are an Entertainer in the best sense! Favorite Song on Pink Floyd's "The Wall": There is only one 80 minute song!?
In 1979 The Greg Kihn Band released In The Naked Eye, which may or may not have been the best record, but it marks the time that I discovered that a lot of lesser-known bands didn't have roadies. Growing up, the local heroes were Earthquake, and Yesterday And Today. Hollywood pirated one of Robbie Dunbar's tunes and that got them a few bucks to start Bezerkley Records. Checking out their roster I saw that several of my favorite bands were playing around and started going to live shows, which featured opening acts. (Funny how much The Squares were doing exactly what Joe Satriani does today, but could hardly get bookings.) Then I found out that many people, and guitarists in particular, were often willing to let some healthy young volunteer move their big tube combos and such and that I could avoid getting asked for ID, or even get an occasional free beer out of going in with the band. Not a lot of local rock scenes where I am now, I don't think a guy could make much of a living at it. The Rubinoos put a new album out recently and Chuck Prophet has one out this month, so all is not lost. 🎸
I repaired the Black Fuzz Face looking pedal at 1:03 for my guitar teacher about a year ago it is in very good condition No scratches. , very basic circuit. Never heard of that company before researching the pedal. Sounded really good after changing the pot values. I can't help but think of Dr. Evil when you say at 5:38 "Clean Octave Effect".
I acquired a Rolly a couple of years ago, It wasn't working so I fixed it and ended up selling it. The one I had had a switchable pot, which thickens the plot. Never really understood what the switch was doing but it was changing something in the way the filter acted. It sounded very good from what I remember.

Rust Never Sleeps was a really good 1979 album.
Quick correction: MXR had already long before gone with a small footprint by the time Boss changed over. Love these JHS shows- great stuff!
You just made a phaser that nobody's ever heard of more expensive than the Mona Lisa. Bravo!
the Knobs on these are blowing my mind from a design standpoint. something really classy unique at least by what we see a lot now. the taper and the scaled back chicken head like demarkation. And got this pointed around the point of the Obsessive about fine details section hahaha
I thought the same! Actually surprised that Josh had not made a remark about those!
Thanks for the video, I lol'ed multiple times during it. Definitely made the day a little brighter. Keep up the good work! For a song from 1979, lets go with Hey Hey, My My (Into the Black).
So geeked out about the shoutout to my local luthier & Guyatone builder, DeMont Guitars in Oswego, IL!
“Entertainment!” by Gang of Four, hands down favorite album of 79’!
there exists a lot of mij script logo phase tone pedals. ive seen maxon, ibanez and other brands that all have a eerily similar vibe. maybe some old japanese company had a bunch of phase tones and branded them out to a different companies?
Been watching a lot of your videos Josh and I have to say they are a joy and full of great info!
But I would like to see more bass specific products from JHS cause I would love to support your company!
I'm a simple man. I see a new JHS video, I click
When you imagined the noise gates sound, I laughed hard enough to worry my co workers.
I don't have any co-workers, but they were all worried.
I remember both of those pedals being in the pedal case at one shop and what I related is the account I recall when I asked about the pedals and the differences.
love your show, greetings from malta....
Lots of good ones, but I gotta go with The Specials self-titled debut. Lots o’ fun!
Favourite track on the wall is Vera, favourite track from 1979 is 2000 man by KISS. I hope you have a wonderful long weekend as well, Josh!
I love this channel... That's it. I love everything about it! 😊
Talking Heads - Fear of Music. Still my favorite Talking Heads album.
Your shows are getting better and better each time! Record: I’d say first Dire Straits one? And btw...born in 79
1978, wasn't it?
Paul Shealy man you’re right! Oct 7 1978!
Thank you for showing your Universe, you are an Entertainer in the best sense! Favorite Song on Pink Floyd's "The Wall": There is only one 80 minute song!?
wow crazy tone off Rolly pedal its nice josh thanks 4 this episode
That's it ! We are moving to Japan to live and work there ,and continue the search for that older series !
London Calling also came out in 1979..:)
