@@jenn8494 Can relate; I got this game in its launch year (2009) and it took kid me until *2013* to finally, FINALLY beat that final phase of Mashtooth. Turns out the trick was to get the blue beam fought back, close my DS and let my hand rest for a bit, then come back and do the second part like my life depends on it.
I got stumped at the puzzle in logwater where you have to beat up the fish skeleton so it falls down onto a switch. A kid in my class helped me past it, shoutout to shane if you're out there
Man Club Penguin was also a huge part of my childhood as well. Honestly I love hearing people having the same stuff as me impact there childhood as well!
I've never played starfy but after seeing that one character say "Is that all the gumption you've got" i dont think i can avoid this series any longer.
Thank you for giving this game some love. It was one of the first games I played and I loved it and still loved it when I revisited it 10 years later. It’s not the most complicated or hardcore game but just like Kirby they both make me happy.
I remember my first experience with Starfy was when my friend brought his DS over and started playing this game. He told me that it was really fun and cool, soon he went on to the final boss an unfortunately, that button mashing segment is still really hard for us lol. But yeah, ever since then I’ve been fascinated by this series. I do hope for another Starfy game on the Switch, it would be a miracle.
I’m glad such a recent video is talking about him, the game was unfortunately not the start of a full western release of the series but his one western appearance was amazing. I can’t even possibly explain why I just have such a deep relationship with the final battle, especially that intense meteor moment and legendary moon clash
If you have trouble with the minecart fight, you have a better chance on sitting still in one area while mashing Y and slightly moving just a little bit to change your cannon balls trajectory. After the 2nd phase when they move back and forth, you pretty much won
you got a calm voice to listen to at 2 am. I've no nostalgia for this game in particular, but all the cinematics you've shoen defo convey the story well. This game sure has extra content in the menus. Having played all the Japan-only Starfy games, I would've much appreciated more recurring characters. Most of them'd fit well with this artstyle
Yes thank goodness! I hate when people compare Kirby and Starfy and while I absolutely love both series they are totally different! Although the 5th game’s artstyle does feel Kirby-like a bit.
Since I'm from Europe, I've played some of the earlier Japanese only games through non-official means, but sadly never finished them and completely missed this one. If I have the chance and time, I really should play them all, especially now that I actually know Japanese, this series really deserves it! For now, I'm looking forward to new videos from you about this lovely series!
I'm SO distraught that I hadn't come across this video sooner because it brought me so much nostalgia and so much entertainment due to how well put together this video is...The Legendary starfy was far ahead of its time... No other game could possibly match the charm this game had the emotion it caused us the players to feel. I love this series I wish they could continue it:(
this game is so dear to my heart, it's probably my favorite childhood game ever. i just wish that i could've played through the other 4 too :( i'm so happy that other people like you found as much joy from this game as i did :,)
I used to tease my sister about this game even though I totally enjoyed playing this myself, not many people seem to know about it so thanks for sharing this video!
This awoke so many childhood memories for me. This was probably one of the first games I ever played. I never finished it though as I sucked at video games. I should see if I can find my old cartridge. Anyway fantastic video :)

I remember begging my ma to get this for me back in 09 haha.... Seen it on sale at a Target and i would sink countless hours into this. Something about it just really caught my eye glad i wasnt the only one that remembered this!
I remember seeing commercials on this screen above the tiny little arcade area at a local Walmart that had nothing good in it, I wasn’t able to get it until later on when I saw it on sale as a used game at GameStop years later. I was buying De Blob since it was available for a dollar and stupidly didn’t get Starfy, even though it was only 2 dollars. I was able to try the game out on a friends DS during lunch later on but I haven’t been able to get the game for myself to experience past the first 1 or 2 levels
Same as you I was about nine when I got this game back in 2009 and I had never heard of him until me and my mom went to GameStop at the mall. I saw the game and it caught my eye. Best decision I made as a kid.
Starfy was one of my favorite DS games, though getting 100% was a huge pain. But I'd still love to have another if they ever do. I look forward to seeing your coverage of the other games. I've been wanting to play them myself, but the current lack of a system to play them on is a roadblock. And, well, the lack of being able to read Japanese I guess, but that shouldn't affect gameplay. To touch on the Kirby comparison thoughts, usually when I pull that one, I emphasize more that they are similar in having an focus on fun/charm rather than being hard to beat, instead of meaning that the gameplay is similar. And also a similar sense of just being kinda "different" than your standard platformer. I agree, though, that if you go in expecting Kirby gameplay, you'll be disappointed. They're not the same at all in that regard.
I remember having this game as a kid, actually. Also, side note, This game and Rhythm heaven both feature some extremely niche trope of a rabbit from the moon/space trying to get home with the help of sea creatures. I know about the moon rabbit story but not about any story relating to the moon rabbit asking sea creatures to help it return home, and i doubt Starfy was specifically referencing RH here because it doesn't feel much like a reference.
I was introduced to starfy as a kid from a ad that played In the arcade area of my Walmart I was so curious about this game and always waited for the starfy ad to come on so I can watch it
So glad I own all five games, CIB in great condition which I obtained many years ago. The first Densetsu No Stafy GBA games and the 5th DS game are my favorite. The 4th entry is good, but the GBA and 5th DS titles are better. What a fun series and cool Nintendo mascot.
Personally, i've played the fourth Starfy Game, and i liked. Starfy is now a very obscure series, we need to see him appear more in recent times. I knew of Starfy's existence when i was young, but only got interest on his series since 4 years or so.
Awesome stuff! I was hoping you'd talk about the 2 extra worlds because I think their additions are extremely interesting both game design and conceptual wise but everything else about the video was perfect
Thank you :D! I actually do plan to revisit this game in the series at the end to touch back on topics such as the post-game worlds and Starly, since I think they'll be easier to talk about after going through the first four games (mostly because of the secret final boss.) Glad you enjoyed!
Your scripts are getting better and better! Reading still sounds a bit awkward, but I bet you already know that and are trying to work on it. Keep it up!
Just found your channel by this video popping up in my recommended, and I sure am glad it did! This was a very insightful video about a series I've never been too familiar with, and I'll definitely have to give some of the games a try sometime. Subscribed! :D
i love starfy so much! 2 questions i have is if you'll do a video on the two bonus worlds in the game and if you can scan the booklet and post the pages online
Hi! I plan to revisit the game after I cover the other four entries to talk about the bonus worlds and other content that relates more back to the old games. Unfortunately I do not own a scanner personally so I'm unable to scan the booklet, but if I ever get my hands on one, I would love to!
It's funny, this vid is as obscure as starfy is for your channel, which makes me sad. I loved the legendary starfy, and hope the other games at least get a fan translation so I can actually play them some day.
My friend and I played this ALL summer WHENEVER we were together back in the day... We never beat the final boss. I have my own copy but never got very far haha
To be honest I really dont like super tight button mashing challenges. I still have flashbacks to the hardest ones in the wonderful 101 where I had to remap all the face buttons onto a so I could mash fast enough.
Starfy looks really cool. It's too bad the game (or any of its predecessors) was never released in Europe. Oh well, they've released previously NA and Japan-exclusive games on VC in Europe before, so maybe it'll come to Europe someday and I'll get to play it. Actually, let me check... Okay, no, it isn't on Wii U VC. I figured, but it couldn't hurt to check. In any case, this game looks great, but it also looks very different from Kirby, so I must agree that the "Kirby of the sea"-comparison seems rather tenuous.
if you didn't get stumped for months at mashtooth as a kid did you really experience this game?
More like years..

Starfy is technically a marine action game it’s so heavily based around water.
