There are 2 o-rings on the white shaft which you applied petroleum jelly. It might be better to use a non-petroleum based lubricant to minimize damage to these seals.
Dielectric grease is made for rubber contact but o-rings made for air conditioner use are nitrile, you can tell by the green color, they would be an alternative solution.

This has been an ongoing problem with one of my sprayers. I tried other lubricants but not petroleum jelly. Thanks for the tip!
