Basically, audiences just didn't know what to expect and the movie kinda has a bizarre tone going for it. You know, the setting and the way things are visually portrayed comes off as kinda surreal. It has a weird mix of comedic writing and banter but also being brutally dark. People didn't expect political tones in their Super Mario Bros movie (it's literally Mario and Luigi trying to survive being wanted fugitives in a police state with a corrupt government). I like the movie for all these quirks, but at the same time I think it makes it kinda niche.
surely the most badass police car chase in all story of the cinema, literally a blast, full of thrill in middle a cyberpunk scenario, included the best and coolest police cars never seen before in a movie, this is like in Mario Kart but with more nitro, !YEAH¡ .
As much as Bob Hoskins criticized his role of Mario in the movie, you gotta admit, some other part of him looks like he actually enjoyed it. Nevertheless, I praise him for how well he did, as I do for John Leguizamo as Luigi, and Samantha Mathis as Daisy and Dennis Hopper as King Koopa.

He even admitted that he and Leguizamo were drunk in some scenes to cope with the on set turmoil. Which specific scenes, I don't know.
Even if you hated the movie, you'd have to admit this a pretty entertaining part from it and a very exciting cop-car chase. Lots of great action and special effects scattered throughout the movie. I'm glad to have grown up watching this as a kid and appreciating it for what it was even more as a adult, despite it's flaws. Nothing against Hopskins, Leguizamo, and Hopper for their performances, they did what they could to try help make the movie entertaining, despite the making of it being one great, big shit-show.
This was the only good part of the film. Because this part of the movie the car chase was made very well and it was a basic way to cut the budget, you can tell this was done in several large warehouses and parking lots and simply decorated to the dystopian style world and the fact it’s set up at night time so you don’t see as much makes the scene a bit better.
Mario tried to hit the brakes, only it stopped working once they entered the tunnel. They're driving an Electric f-ing Car that's powered by the city's grid. That's right, Koopa had Electric Vehicles!

I’ll tell you other than the Mario brothers, goombas with the little heads like something out of a Tim Burton film like beetlejuice and King Koopa in this film, the cops were the coolest in this film with the cars, the way they dressed and with the flamethrower guns, they looked like something out of mad max, robocop, judge dredd, and the Batman movies of Tim Burton, and Christopher Nolan.
I don’t care about the critics panning this movie it’s still one of my top favorites growing up!!! Bob Hoskins, John Leguizamo and the rest of the cast and crew still did a great job and I commend them for their hard work.
