It's been common knowledge for a while that Adobe Flash will be shutting down in 2020 due to its age, numerous security issues, poor performance, and other issues. After December 2020, people will be unable to play flash games in any of the major web browsers (chrome, firefox, edge, internet explorer, and more). There is a relatively large community of speedrunners who set out to complete flash games as fast as possible. Flash games attract speedrunners due to their short length, their simplicity, and their very accessible nature. So this begs the question: When flash dies in 2020, will flash game speedrunning die as well? This is the question that will be answered in this video.

A Couple of Updates:
1. We found a standalone version of flash that allows for the jump in level 10 to work, which is a very great outcome.
2. A lot of people continue to be under the impression that flash games will be unplayable after 2020. This is obviously not true. Do whatever you can to spread the word about flashpoint! bluemaxima.org/flashpoint/
How come you never mentioned Ruffle in this video? It's a flash emulator. Is it really not as known about as I thought?
I'm using flashpoint while watching this video. It's so much better for mario 63 without all the lag, and full screen mode is cool even though it can be used to cheat some games like duck life.
old versions of browsers work, like the latest version of chrome supported by windows xp and vista.
I tried opening the standalone flash from the swj file using multiple methods, but none of them worked, can you make a tutorial on how to do that now that flash isn’t being supported?

and Rolling Hero
And Papa's games
At the time, it was my favorite with Run 2 and Fireboy and Watergirl as #2 and #3
Snow Tale is so flippin' underrated, man! It's such a good game.
So Nitrome is slowly transferring their games to the HTML5 part of their website, which basically runs an HTML5 emulator for flash. I assume they'll all end up there eventually. Great video btw!
The only Nitrome game/s I can remember off the top of my head are the Bad Ice Cream series.

I am a very passionate Flash runner. While the mainstream eye might be turned away after 2020, I hope the speedrunning scene for them lives much longer afterwards. The future in uncertain but I hope we can use some sort of old browser version in the future. I have a lot of the same ideas as said in your video.

Well its been a little over 2 years and many flash games (especially speedrunning ones) still have a speedrunning scene, some games even got a bigger player base because of flash going away, as it gave attention to flash games again, and us early late 90's - early 2k's wanted to feel nostalgia before it was terminated.
I almost feel bad for zoomers, they'll never get to experience the joy of flash.

in my opinion,
it's most likely when people started playing Fortnite, since over 70% of ppl were playing flash in 2017, and only 17% played flash in 2019.
They should have done it when less than 10% played it so less people worry about it.
Just as a sidenote, Newgrounds has a flash player that lets you not only play swf files you have downloaded, but also the files on the site itself.

@@Shalakor That's I think Ruffle, which is completely separate aside from the fact that Newgrounds supports it.
Fun fact: You can still play Flash games if you change your PC's date to anything before January 12
Until a certain point, since some pages stop running correctly if you change the date too much.
while yes there's a time window to this, do it too after some time and you get SSL Certificates expiring and the browser not wanting to connect, however the more pressing thing is that browsers are forcibly disabling flash. Firefox looks to do so in version 85, Jan 26th. And chromium-base (Chrome, Opera, Edge et al.) Look to have disabled flash support now with Chrome 88 being merged into stable on the 19th. Any chromium-based browsers if not now will remove flash support in the next immediate chromium update.
From personal experience, if you had disabled Windows updates beforehand it will work too. And if it's too late, just look up Ruffle, it's an extension that lets you run flash.

apparently y8 has it's own browser that supports flash.
I don't know how many games it will support but when I searched a random flash game but it said to download it, and it is a way to play flash games on a browser in 2021
edit: the basilisk browser that flashpoint uses also supports flash.

I have always used the Flash player projector for playing flash games offline. Its really great.
Newer versions have the same killswitch as browser Flash.

One of my favourite and first flash games was Zombotron. Which was made into a proper full on steam game. The only thing bad about it is the ending.

Like everyone is daily watching news about flash games.
I want to point out that Club Penguin speedrunning is still active, but not on the original leaderboards. Since Club Penguin was such a big game no private server can perfectly recreate it which is part of the reason to leave the old leaderboard as it is. As you mention, accurately running games may become an issue in the future. Some alternative Flash players may never be completely reliable.
I am aware of this, however there wasn't a necessity to include it in this particular video.

Some of my school laptops have the old Microsoft website and it works
just doing some kingdom rush speedruns on standalone flash, cause the premium content (which has a massive timesave help) cannot be purchased anymore and flashpoint hasnt added it yet (also Ironhide doesnt care about the flash version anymore, so isnt a issue)
There are still some Chinese browsers that are based on chromium supporting flash and some Chinese flash based online game still running

Nitrome could just sell their classics on Steam and bring in a fuck ton of money that way. I don't think they understand how widespread their games were. I don't even remember their name, but their intro was immediately recognizable. (I'm pretty sure being based on Flash does not disqualify a game from being sold on Steam, right?)

Eventually ruffle, a flash emulator, will release, which will allow for web play. Search it up on github.

News Flash! (heh)
Commenting in May 2021. You can't download the standalone Flash player anymore. I was luckily able to download and play Super Mario 63 by other means, but it still sucks.
