11:11 The Diamond and Pearl remakes didn't check for any gym badges because the originals didn't check for any gym badges. The code was literally copied and pasted straight from the originals, and we know this because the remakes have the same bugs as those original games, including a bug where Fire Fang hits through Wonder Guard (when it's hacked onto a Pokemon that isn't Shedinja that isn't weak to Fire).
As a wonder runner, it is insane to see how fast this game has been ripped apart. Most of us literally woke up to this overnight out of bounds discovery. It's a shame that Nintendo patched this, forcing many people to avoid updating and even factory resetting. Great in-depth and accurate explanation, and I can't wait to see how Wonder speedruns evolve in the future :)
Yes, what a shame that Nintendo removed an unintended exploit from their game, making the game more stable for 99% of the playerbase. Are you really suggesting they shouldn't have?
@@top5g04t BurgerandFreys actually found it by complete accident while playing with a friend who would change characters a lot. Suddenly he fell off the map, and then tried to figure out what happened later. That being said, it won't affect most players and doesn't cause any permanent harm.
The thing about implicit/explicit checks reminds me of how in Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald, the game apparently only checks if you have the sixth badge at the mandatory Pokemon League badge check thing. It's the only badge in that game that you don't need to progress in the overworld, since it just allows you to use Fly.
@@ChongoShow You actually kind of do. Norman refuses to fight you until you have four badges, so you still kind of need to defeat Brawly anyways to advance in the overworld, even if the roadblock doesn't show up immediately.
My favorite "holy grail" skip that doesn't exist yet is the Long Hallway Autosave Skip in UNDERTALE. It's almost useless in most categories but would save over 12 hours in 100% and we are tantalizingly close to finding it.
The Jet Run vs Fast Dash debate reminds me a lot of the Hammer Suit vs Fire Flower route in SMB3's longer categories. For 100%/All levels runs one is clearly better, but for the basic warpless category they'll keep switching back and forth as new strats are found!
That’s very cool! SMBW is very similar in the sense that Fast Dash is clearly better for Any% and Jet Run is clearly better for 100%. ARS is the “middle child” where either route is viable!
I'm probably too late, but the reason that programmers like the "implicit" checks is that it makes testing easier: You can just load into the game at any point you want and finish it from there. If you did explicit checks, you would have to play the game from the start every time, or laboriously manually craft a save file.
It's usually done, because it saves on coding, there is just no reason to have 6 lines of code running, to check for, in this example, the seeds, when only 3 of them can be picked up in any order. Devs generally have tools for something like testing.
@@neros_soren I mean it's both really. Depending on how you have the code set up, it might actually be less code to check for the item than not to check. And sure, ideally you'd have nice dev tools for this, but in reality that's not always the case and dev tools lag behind what's in the game. And for that matter, the item you collect may not even be implemented by the time you're testing the rest of the game. Yeah, it does feel a little too soon to declare a Holy Grail for a game that hasn't even been out a full calendar year yet. But it does feel like what a Holy Grail skip should be.
Oot actually checks for the emerald thing for opening the door of time, so even tho you *should* have it any time you exit the forest, skipping it still locks you out of the master sword until you get it, or just, door of time skip.
9:23 also, in Pikmin 3, if you do an OOB glitch to beat the vehemoth phosbat, you can unlock charlie before reuniting alph and Brittany. and the game just assumes that once you unlock charlie, they got reunited
What's interesting about Jet Run is that you can get a Jet Run 2 badge in World 6 without having ever collected the first Jet Run badge in World 1. And remember, Any% has a World 6 OOB, and you can do World 6 before 4 and 5. So i think the chances of this 2nd Jet Run badge getting routed into Any%-along with a World 6 first route-sometime in the near future are very likely.

I've been waiting for a video like this to finally show my friends how broken Wonder actually is. It is not only informative, but also entertaining.
I'm more interested in a No Jet Run category, and maybe one or two other ridiculous badges removed. But I'm that guy who doesn't like seeing a game reduced to "use this one thing that looks the same, and sure there's a bunch of skill, but it all looks the same".
18:54 it looks like the teleportation glitch has the same effects as a rail system, like for selecting levels. Maybe the game didn't always have an open world, so all of them have a "rail," but it is invisible and mostly unused, under the map. So when you fall underneath the map and hit a rail, it will bring you to the next level, depending on what direction you are inputting. I can't see how else they would travel in such a deliberate way when that happens, directly towards a level with no rails for it in the first place. However, I wonder when they decided to change it to a 3d overworld since that would influence how much actually has that unused railway mechanic. It did seem like it happened in the last world, but there has to be a specific spot to fall into that would detect you as on the path. I don't have the game myself, or I would be testing these ideas personally, but I can just throw the idea out there as is, lol.
I know you mostly do Mario vids, but you should really check out the speedruns of early Zelda TOTK versions. I have a feeling Wonder will follow the same recent trend (of early, non-patched versions being preferential to later versions for speedruns)
For Pokemon checks, the games got progressively worse at checking for badges, at least for the first 4 generations. In Gen 1, each guard checks for a separate badge, and even with out of bounds tricks, only the 1st and 8th guards can be skipped. In Gen 2, the guard checks for all 8 badges, though the trigger is only one tile big, so if you glitch the map, you can walk around it. In the Gen 3 Hoenn games, the guards only check for the 6th badge. This is because you need the 8th for Waterfall to get there, the 7th for Dive to get the 8th, the 5th for Surf, and the first 4 to get the 5th. In Gen 4, I don't think the guards check for anything. I know the guards in the Gen 2 remakes don't, because speed runners will use out of bounds tricks to get there early. (Diamond and Pearl speed runs just bike to the hall of fame, so they don't even see the guards).

Was really looking forward to the speedrunning scene behind this game when I saw the trailers for it. The games release and subsequent community went almost entirely over my radar, so this video is a godsend. Would absolutely love to see how people blast through the game with the jet run badge, I only briefly heard of it and didnt know it was simply in the first world; my favorite kinds of speedruns are the type that involve actually playing the game as intended whilst still shaving seconds with routes that the devs never saw coming. Overall great video, would love to see a second part : )

No insult to Kosmic. It was a fine transition. A good transition. But it wasn't nearly as shockingly smooth as some commenters proclaim.
It's a big shame that the glitch was patched, but I don't doubt that another glitch will be discovered that will allow us to skip the first half of the game again.
@@GeorgeDCowley Which would require them basically killing the community, and also not being able to stream/post runs because it would give them away. What really needs to happen os that Nintendo needs to stop being so hostile to speed running (and also all of their customers).
@@derp195 Sure would help if speedrunners advertised it a bit better. "How speedrunners BROKE this game" sounds like bad press for a game and something the developers need to FIX. And a lot of analyses (not Kosmic's) say things like "Because of this game's terrible/lazy programming, (...)" Nowhere is this more obvious than with pokemon red/blue for example. If you know how to program and understand the RAM constraints they dealt with at the time, you'd be calling them legendary code wizards. If you watch 17 year old morons on youtube break it down, they talk about how the game is coded like garbage when they explain the various exploits. Perhaps the advertising around the speedrunning community could show a bit more humility and act like the effort is collaborative rather than combative - or I guess you'll need to accept that nintendo is going to remain hostile to speedrunners.
@@far2ezanother aspect is I think Nintendo cares less about the speedrunning community specifically and are more worried about potential edge cases where something could theoretically break in a casual run and result in confusion, or potentially be a gap into other unforeseen issues. A speedrunners goal is beating what’s presented in a game they like as fast as possible, not amassing as many glitches/bugs as possible (that’s just a natural consequence). Nintendo’s goal is just making a good game, something that feels good to play. Because that’s ultimately what leads to a speedrun in the first place; people care enough about game to speedrun it, or to watch speedruns of it. I often see this weird entitlement from runners that what they’re doing is advertising the game, but I honestly think they overestimate their influence in that regard. Yeah sure, maybe a handful of people are so impressed by how using two player overworld collision glitch to skip stages that it changes their lives and make them play a game, but it probably pales in comparison to the rest of the sales.
[5:56] Wait, is that Zimbo actually making those animalistic noises? or is it just a coincidence that his facial gestures kinda match up with the sounds?
i'm kinda glad the skips only skip PART of the game and not 99% of it. i'm all for fast speedruns but glitching around the world map and just playing the last level would make for a really dull run.
With how many runners were saying things like “I haven’t even seen the hint of a glitch yet, this game is surprisingly solid”, it’s impressive the community broke the game so quickly.
Super interesting and informative video! And I love the thumbnail with the left-aligned title. :P Also, yes, please, I'd like a video about Jet Run vs Fast Dash!
one thing I've noticed is that the "final" world in the game technically isn't its own world. When you check the course menu, it's considered part of petal isles. Does that mean it's always loaded? and if so, where? And if the final level is always available, does that mean you could skip world one, then teleport straight from petal isles to the final level, beat it, and end time after only playing four levels? (unless the first three are skippable, but I haven't heard anything about that)
Now wait for Bowser Warp Skip, entering World Bowser without even unlocking the warp, thus skipping literally everything except the beginning of World 1 and the Bowser levels.
Dude said "Holy Grail" more times than Indiana Jones did in the Last Crusade. OOB stuff is cool but the "Holy Grail" of a speedrun is either a credits warp or ACE
Credits warp or ace is cool, once, but they don't make for interesting speedruns. Holy grail tricks make runs more interesting, are usually something that a lot of the run hinges on and are theorized but seem just out of reach. Until one day they're not
Funny how despite the fact that this is one of the most polished Mario games and one of the most polished games period, speedrunners are still finding glitches a exploits
There is a reason for developers not to explicitly check for key items. If a player gets the later McGuffins but not the former, then that doesn't necessarily mean that the player managed to skip getting the item, it just means something went wrong. It could just as well be that the player got the McGuffin, but that it somehow didn't register, or was somehow un-gotten. In this case the player would be hard locked into not being able to complete the game as key items can't be gotten twice. And it's more important to prevent a lock than it is to keep canonical consistency with the story, ergo players should pass with the minimum requirements. Also, it probably makes the code look better, nobody likes if statements that go off the page or onto a new line. Two checks just look better.
I definitely like the idea of hearing about how these two badges change the 'style' of play in a Mario game. The only thing I can think that remotely would compare would be the different characters of Mario 2, and how each one can 'solve' levels in different ways. Would be interesting to hear about all that stuff for sure. EDIT: Oh, I just realized I responded to something posted 6 months ago. >_>'
Sometimes, there's a point where skips and glitches end up taking the fun from playing AND watching the game. Like the Super Metroid category where you bomb jump offscreen for several minutes then move in a glitched area to end the game, where it's just watching nothing, nothing, and more nothing. Soooooo... I understand speed is the key, but there's a point where too fast removes all the fun.
18:45 Why not just use the glitch to teleport to Bowser's level when the first one is the only one unlocked? Do the other levels still appear where they are meant to be if you didn't clear the first one yet?
Hi, the levels are unlocked (appearing) one after the other in this world, meaning the levels don't appear unless you beat the last one. And for the teleportation to Bowser's world last level, we have some issues that prevent us from teleporting there, mainly the fact that we weren't able to find a way to teleport in this world yet. Have a nice day! ;)
@@Glitchyll5126 Well the guy in the video said the Bowser level is always available (I don't know if that's true or not) so my theory is if someone finds a way to teleport in the Bowser world, wouldn't that glitch just teleport them straight to that level since there is no other level to teleport to?
@DarkestMarlin74 Yes, you are right, luigifan32 said that this level is always available, but we can't teleport straight to it. i wish we could have a new game+ w/ all badges unlocked. would love to see runners do the whole run w the jet run badge!
Keep it up Kosmic! I'm happy to see you're getting sponsorships again after what you said a couple of videos back - wishing you all the best sir!!!
I know you mostly do Mario vids, but you should really check out the speedruns of early Zelda TOTK versions. I have a feeling Wonder will follow the same recent trend (of early, non-patched versions being preferential to later versions for speedruns)
Yeah, you need sponsorships you can trust.
So nice to see kosmic talk about games besides super mario bros and 2j, such a breath of fresh air
wonderful video! informative and accurate on the main points
this game truly evolved super fast, it's been super fun to play with for the last month
Okay but can we appreciate the shift into the ad? One of the smoothest transitions into a sponsor I've seen tbh
If they give us a Mario Maker with this game as a style, the Jet Run kaizo levels are gonna be absolutely crazy.
My main belief as to why Wonder doesn't have warps is the fact that it is a Yoshi's Island tribute, which also doesn't have warps.
Huh. Do you mean because of the overworld structure? Or because Wonder flowers are like touching fuzzies? what is your reasoning for that
Amazing! I absolutely love the community work together to figure out all this sick speedrun tricks!
Man thank you kosmic for all of those video.
Its really amazing what Mario became after all those years.I still tear up remember how i and my parents played super mario bros. Now after some years i will play with my parents and my kids again.Mario for life !!!
Updates like this one is why I get physical releases whenever I can. I can always (delete my saves to) downpatch Mario Odyssey, Tears of the Kingdom and Mario Wonder to play with 1.0 glitches.
Hahaha, just when i was thinking about typing "They'll most likely patch it", Future Kosmic in the video said it XD
11:11 You should've said "Kosmic from the future here, it's true!", as a random joke, haha!
Pretty cool, even with the huge loss from the update, to see speedrun strats and changes!
5:28 "burger and fries comes out of nowhere" is one of the sentences of all time
How is it possible that I got incredibly hype when you showed Battletanx for two seconds, and then lost all that excitement when war thunder pops up.
"Are you my Master?" - Mario, probably
1:45 One of the Battle Tanx games! Someone else remembers them? Don't know which one, since I most remember played the Ps1 Global Assault but that ammo icon is distinct
Mario speed runners: “I *wonder* how we’ll break the next game…”
Super Mario Wonder: “I got ya covered”
The way some youtubers transition into sponsors are so seamless and clever that I'm not even mad i have to watch an ad
I really don't know why some people think it's so seamless. As soon as he swapped to "I also grew up playing this" (unrelated tank game) I _knew_ something like War of Tanks was going to come.
No insult to Kosmic. It was a fine transition. A good transition. But it wasn't nearly as shockingly smooth as some commenters proclaim.
@@far2ez okay
Omg we need a summoning salt video on this!
Perfectly explained! As a Wonder speedrunner, yes I can say the World 1 skip is so hard 😂😂
It took me like 2 hours to learn how to do it without falling off rofl
@@Kosmicd12 i still can’t do it 😝
Wonderful video Kosmic! It was a fun time to watch :) Thank you. ❤
If i become a game dev someday ill let my glitches stay in the game (unless they’re horrible or ruin the experience)
Jumping out of the world edge gives the definition “platformer” to a whole new level with this speedrun.
Do the all royal seeds jet run vs fast dash video! I just love watching jet run speedruns particularly, so I'm glad it was determined to be viable.
Amazingly told. Def the best wonder speedrunning analysis out there
It's a big shame that the glitch was patched, but I don't doubt that another glitch will be discovered that will allow us to skip the first half of the game again.
Aaaaaaand, Nintendo patched all the good glitches.
I kind of think runners should hold off on revealing glitches for a couple of years, so Nintendo doesn't patch them.
And a lot of analyses (not Kosmic's) say things like "Because of this game's terrible/lazy programming, (...)"
Nowhere is this more obvious than with pokemon red/blue for example.
9:18 CountLG and GSR (AKA No IM/WW) recognition. Ya love to see it
[5:56] Wait, is that Zimbo actually making those animalistic noises? or is it just a coincidence that his facial gestures kinda match up with the sounds?
21:20 YO CHAT THATS ME DUDE
ive actually beat that run by 4f LMFAO
Fricken LOVED that battletanx reference into the sponsor, I grew up with that game as well[never played the sequel, but have been intrigued]
I would definitely like to see more about using different badges. It's great to see how quickly speedrunners destroy popular platformers like this
That AD transition was just ridiculously smooth. Good job.
Oh my god the transition into the sponsor was great
it's just amazing to see this game getting optimized every day. Something unusual for a Mario game, yet totally a blessing for speedrunners :))
i'm kinda glad the skips only skip PART of the game and not 99% of it. i'm all for fast speedruns but glitching around the world map and just playing the last level would make for a really dull run.
That is insanely impressive that the title was completely broken all within a month :0
With how many runners were saying things like “I haven’t even seen the hint of a glitch yet, this game is surprisingly solid”, it’s impressive the community broke the game so quickly.
Super interesting and informative video! And I love the thumbnail with the left-aligned title. :P
Also, yes, please, I'd like a video about Jet Run vs Fast Dash!
1:04, The perfect transition doesn't exi-
one thing I've noticed is that the "final" world in the game technically isn't its own world. When you check the course menu, it's considered part of petal isles. Does that mean it's always loaded? and if so, where? And if the final level is always available, does that mean you could skip world one, then teleport straight from petal isles to the final level, beat it, and end time after only playing four levels? (unless the first three are skippable, but I haven't heard anything about that)
8:00 IT'S MARIO ODYSSEY FMS ALL OVER AGAIN
6:43 why does that cloud look like some ripped Chad?
Now wait for Bowser Warp Skip, entering World Bowser without even unlocking the warp, thus skipping literally everything except the beginning of World 1 and the Bowser levels.
3:38 wait hold on, is that SilentWolf? The Melee legend?
BATTLE TANX! I haven't played that game in so long. Me and my sister would play that game for hours. The good old days of split screen.
Great video, Kosmic! It was nice seeing those monumental skips before Wonder, let’s us know we’re about to see something juicy!
Until one day they're not
22.5 minute video length
16.5 minutes of actual content (without filler, sponsors, or unpaid/self promotion)
You going to make a new mainline shirt with wonder on it? I’m rocking my hoodie now and it’s missing a game! Love the content by the way!
Funny how despite the fact that this is one of the most polished Mario games and one of the most polished games period, speedrunners are still finding glitches a exploits
Me and my brother were not prepared for Jet Run's absurd power.
Those Jet Run plus Bubble Flower moves are slick.
Thank you for making the video!
That sponsor transition was seamless I laughed so hard
That was fast it’s soo cool watching Mario speed runs
In your video with the parts, the little music that plays reminds me of super paper, Mario
Speedrunners are insane, they are a different breed.
Normal people: slowly grow and peacefully water a flower
Any% users: rip the flower out and call it a win
Jet Run vs Fast Dash sounds like it would be a good watch.
And yet it took me 16-17 hours to 100% the game. Speedrunners always amaze me.
Very smooth transition to sponsor haha nicely done!
Kosmic: Introduces Warthunder as the sponsor
Me: The classified documents leak game?
Sometimes, there's a point where skips and glitches end up taking the fun from playing AND watching the game. Like the Super Metroid category where you bomb jump offscreen for several minutes then move in a glitched area to end the game, where it's just watching nothing, nothing, and more nothing.
Soooooo... I understand speed is the key, but there's a point where too fast removes all the fun.
Fun is a subjective thing. That's why there are categories in speedruning. If you don't like it, watch glitchless category
ok but can we talk about how clean that sponsor segway was
18:45 Why not just use the glitch to teleport to Bowser's level when the first one is the only one unlocked?
Luigifan32 tried but he couldn't make it (by modifying the map so that teleporting was possible, but no luck teleporting to the last level). It seems like something is blocking us.😕
@@Glitchyll5126 Hopefully you find a way around it (barrier skeep was deemed impossible for a long time and look how that turned out)
0:06 that trophy is so retro...
Bro, Istg speedrunners never fail to amaze me lmao increedible!! New sub
That had to be the smoothest sponsor plug i've ever seen, and I hate you for it.
That Battle Tanx shoutout. I felt that nostalgia
