07:11 "This is your dream" love it I never attended OSU, nor do I personally know anyone that has. I'm completely obsessed with this band for reasons I cannot explain
I can tell you why. It is because they are a precision band and the members are disciplined to march in an exact fashion. There is no sloppiness whatsoever because there is great pride to be in the band and lastly, because they have some of the most ingenious and complicated march formations ever performed on a field. I really do think they are the best college band in the nation and I am not saying that only because I formerly was an Ohio resident.
Life long, die-hard Michigan fan here. But this is one of the great moments in college football pageantry, and this must have been such a moment for you! Especially that girl on trumpet yelling, "This is your dream!" What a moment!
@@willWalton-te4sn crazy that that's a lie. the school up north did form "ohio" diagonally across the field but it was in no way Script ohio. rest assure OSU knew how to spell Ohio long before that school up north came
Mysterious J - If you’re an Ohio State fan, I don’t blame you for focusing on the last 10 years. It’s understandable that you would want to distract attention from the fact that Michigan leads the all-time series.
@@mt22201 I'm not. I was simply replying to the asked question, and because I know the overall record I focused on the last 10 years. I don't really care one way or the other. I'm neither an Ohio State or Michigan fan. I actually prefer Michigan more, but I love Ohio State's band.
I was born and raised in Oklahoma, but my dad was from Ohio. I heard so much about dotting the i when I was growing up, that I switched to tuba as soon as it was offered. That was an awesome experience this and finally getting to participate in dotting the i. Thank you so much for sharing this!!! I love the Tuba mentality of "We are supposed to be playing? Nah!! High fives, fist bumps, and cheers all around. This is our moment!"
It is 1:03 AM and I am crying over this. It sucks there will be no season this year. I understand it’s the safest thing to do, but damn I’ll miss this band this year
I’m definitely not an Ohio State fan (I bleed LSU Purple and Gold), but have always loved watching ‘dotting the I’ whenever I saw it on TV. Your enthusiasm and excitement in this video is awesome. Where the drum major picks you up and you dot the I is AWESOME!!
I just had to come back and watch this to dig up some found memories. As a former (snare) drummer, I never had to go beyond the bottom of the big "O." In other words, we never had to haul drums through those tricky crossovers that you see in the video where the big "O" connects to the "h." I remember during my time in band, the trombonium players were converted by Dr. Droste to slide trombones, which sounded fantastic. It took some time to get use to getting the slide trombones through those crossovers. In the early days of that conversion, you could see a broken slide or two lying on the field after script Ohio because the player didn't get the instrument down in time and the crossing members marched right throw those slides as they were supposed to. Those were brand new (I think King) silver-plated instruments that the school had just bought. The band had a large instrument repair staff that was kept busy with those broken trombones.
Took xy son to his first Buckeye Gaxe on this day. What an honor to dot the "I". With Xishigan cancelling the 2020 gaxe, I was searching for rexinders that xake this gaxe and OSU so great. Your video is a highlight for the list. Go Bucks!
This is my all time goal in life. I'm a Junior in high school, and going to the Navy after school. If I get the opportunity to go to osu, IM TAKING IT!!!
Have you ever wished you played the Susa phone so you can dot the i I play the trumpet and I want to go to osu and be in the band soooo bad I went to the stadium on my seventh grade field trip two years ago and I walked on the field and I was literally shaking like it was crazy and I literally need to go back it was the best feeling in the world
OMG i recognise this game from the documentry done on the 141st edition on the band, (its on youtube to watch) but if i remember correctly this was after the macy's thanksgiving parade right (GO BUCKS!!!!!)? anyways love this band!!!!
The yeah Michigan sucks had me dying laughing it’s my dream to do this and I start high school marching band (I’m in 8th grade) in a couple months so we’ll see.
you watched the video of his? samee i came here bc the tuba in the other line was doing a high five to the other tuba who’s gonna be the dot in the i 😂
As luck will have I was re watching the 141 movie earlier today and the name clicked. That was you in the OSU vs Michigan game. It must have been quite the experience.
As a TBDBITL snare drummer from a looong ago, "whistle" is blown by (as I recall) the end tuba player (squad leader?) who is on the east side of the block, facing west. He sees that X-Row trumpets, the last row in the block, is going to hit their final spots in the 16x12 person-block on the coming repeat of the drum cadence. The whistle is blown and everyone yells "whistle" to make sure all the drummers can hear over their drums and know that it is the final repeat of the cadence leading to roll-off and intro of Buckeye Battle Cry. Nothing is left to chance with this band. Everything is purposeful, well-scripted and precisely executed.
I am blind, so I don’t really understand. So what exactly does the sousaphone player do when he dotts the i? All I know is that he takes a bow at the end.
well....they are spelling out the word ohio with their bodies marching in a line, as if a pen is writing it with out lifting up. dotting the the i is when the sousaphone player gets the honor of being the dot in the lowercase i on the field. he does the bow as well as play solo as the others sang as you heard. im sorry if you never had vision or not sure what an i looks like since its much different then braille. this is the best way to describe it.
Out of curiosity, what did you use to record this and where did you put it on your horn to record? Been thinking of doing something similar to record my perspective of the Mississippi State pregame.
It’s selected by the sousaphones for each Script Ohio. Usually a 4th or 5th year senior who’s been in the band since they first attended the Ohio State University. Every step in the ramp entrance is highly choreographed, so whoever is selected will practice that week from that position.
The honor goes to 4th year sousaphone players. However, the OSU Band has alternate players. Each week you can be challenged and loose your spot marching for that week. Moreover, not everyone is selected for the band as a freshman. Consequently, not all 4th year players have actually marched in the same number of games. Seniority then allows the most senior person to select their game. Obviously, Xichigan is the top choice. Other games less so. However, getting to do it once... for any game is a great honor.
07:11 "This is your dream" love it

Fuck having fun!
The way the crowd ROARS as soon as you step out of line to go dot the i!
I like how the flugelhorn giving the the i-dotter a low-five has become a tradition itself.
