I am a thrash/death metal drummer and my band is oriented in this style for the past 8 years. I am no fusion jazz guru but I definitely enjoy the music and playing the most I can in it. Enjoy this presentation bearing in mind that I am a thrash drummer with a strong focus on my musical education.
So, this is my interpretation on the Jazz Standard "On Green Dolphin Street"
For anyone who knows the song from Miles' version, this is a completely different approach, more fast, aggressive and with lots of space to unleash some chops!
I approached the drums with the classic bebop formula which goes with Hi-hat on 2-4, quarter not feathering the bass drum and left hand comping-orchestration, on or against the melody.
As far as comping goes I tried to divide my focus on following the solo piano and the accompaniment piano
Around 03:10 minute the trading begins with 4 bars of drum solo and then 4 bars of piano solo.
Excuse my rustiness at some point, it's all pure exaggerating zeal!!
Also, there is quite a story behind this one, so for anyone curious I'll state a few things about it.
The song was written in 1947 by a Polish composer by the name "Bronisław Kaper" for the film Green Dolphin Street.
There are lots of renditions of the song by artists like Bill Evans, Eric Dolphy, Wynton Kelly, Sonny Rollins and Chich Corea with Return To Forever.
However Miles is the one who popularized it and made the song a jazz standard in 1958.
