    Just got my very first baitcaster for my birthday. I've watched this video several times over the past few months and I am now ready to head down the basement to spool my new Lew's Tournament MB. I'll be practicing pitching in the backyard all day today. Thanks man.

    Gene, you had me going with that knot connecting the two lines. Then you hit the FG point. I thought I was gonna fall out of my chair. Thanks for the 411 on using the braid on a different spool. I wouldn't have thought of that. I'll keep watching, you keep fishing!

    Tie the line through the spool. That’s why the holes are there on most newer baitcasters to prevent the spinning effect you get when pulling larger fish in.

    reminds of the first time I tried braid. I spooled it on a spinning reel and I just tied it off like I always had with mono. Yeh that didnt work too well! Great tip Gene!

    Hey Gene.
    I fully agree that it is much better hold in the spool with mono backing than with electrical tape.
    And above all, it becomes much cheaper to use mono backing and about 150yrds braid per reel.
    I also turn my braid after each season ellen when it gets very worn.
    tight lines, Ronny

    I put the braid through the holes drilled in the spool on the Garcia pro max and mgxtreme. That seems to prevent slipping if you have the holes to make the spool lighter.

    A tip I've found to work well to help with getting the line around the spool:
    If your spool is drilled, push the line through the line guide and loop it around your finger with about 10-12" of free line. Then put as much of the end of the line in one of the holes in the spool and turn the spool. That's it. No fighting, no trying to thread it around or pick the line out, etc.

  • @kylebumgardner3102
    @kylebumgardner3102 8 лет назад

    Good video Gene. Ya'll will save yourselves a lot of money if you use mono backing with your braid. Also if you can't figure out the the knot he's using to tie the original line directly onto the spool, don't sweat it, you shouldn't ever have to get down to the actual spool. Just tie several overhand knots and you're good to go. If you really feel nervous, put some electrical tape on the spool over your knot. And a lot of reels these days have holes in the spool for you to tie onto.

    Can you clarify something for me? I just bought a Lew's Mach II spool which does have holes to pass line through. If I tie the slip knot through the holes, does that work just as well as wrapping mono before hand? I understand the concept of using mono to save braid, just wondering if the holes serve the same purpose in stopping slippage.

      You would be putting the bulk of the tension on a thinner part rather than the entire diameter of the reel.
      While its true that the tension will be disappated rather evenly with the reel full, if you start running outta line your reel might start having issues.

    I, like an idiot, bought a frog to use but then put 12lbs flouro on my baitcasting reel, and I was wondering if there would be a good way to not waste that much of the fluorocarbon line that I bought but still be able to put braid on. Would I just take out a bunch of line until I have a backing good enough to put the braid on?
    Edit: btw I have an Abu Garcia Black Max 2

    • @frankvanco3903
      @frankvanco3903 7 лет назад

      From personal experience (having been new to bait casting myself at one point) If what you are fishing with are small cranks and light soft plastics, using a med/heavy rod paired up with a cheap reel is just going to make you want to drive your boat into a bridge at a high rate of speed. I strongly recommend that you save your money and buy a nicer rod and reel. The reel in this video costs $120 and isn't a bad starter reel (I have one - 13 Fishing Inception). I would also invest in a 7' med power fast action rod. Fluke Master has some awesome videos about rod and reel selections. Watch them. I absolutely promise you, if you save up and invest in quality equipment, you will be TONS more satisfied with your bait casting experience. IMO

    Couple of questions. Why the Alberto knot instead of an fg to connect the mono to the braid? Given the fg is thinner. Two, a bass resource video came up next and he didn’t put a base of mono on. He used a lot of finger pressure to wind the braid on tight. Which method do you prefer?

    • @Flukemaster
      @Flukemaster  6 лет назад

      The FG knot requires tension to be put on the line. When I'm spooling a reel up most of the time I don't have it attached to the rod so an Alberto is better because it doesn't require tension. I would never use the finger pressure method, it's not as reliable.

    I do not use mono any more for anything other than ice fishing, my father is a salmon troller , so he always has left over 12# Ande mono, which has spent a summer in the cabin of his boat. Even after all that heat has hit that over those months, It still has less memory than any other mono I have every used, which makes it easier to spool as backing. Ande is fairly cheap, try it, you won't regret it.

    Is it necessary to use electrical tape or a fluorocarbon backer on spinning reels too? Or just baitcasters? Thx

      I always add some sort of backing to spinning reels don't know if you need to but it works for me
