    I have one of these 4GEE routers and I get pretty much the same screens as shown here but on the Settings tab when I go to Advanced Settings I only get IP filter and MAC filter. I really need the DMZ settings, I tried to install updates from the Devices page but it says I have the latest software, EE70_02_00_15. I realise you said that DMZ settings won't work in the UK but it's my only hope, I'm trying to setup a Nintendo 2DS for online play and the Nintendo website gave this as the only solution to the issues I've been having. Thanks very much for the video, at least now I know for sure that I am looking in the right place for the DMZ settings

      You can't on mobile networks. They all use CGNAT (Carrier Grade NAT) where hundreds or thousands of customers share a public IP address. Port forwarding or inbound ports are not possible.

      I wouldn't have thought that the BT disks would cause that kind of problem. They are/should just be access points. What LAN IP address does your router have and what LAN IP address does your game console have. (Usually 192.168.something.something).

      If you are on any network other than Three you can't do port forwarding. Every network other than Three uses CGNAT (carrier grade NAT) where you share a public IP with hundreds or maybe thousands of other customers. The WAN IP your router has is an "internal" IP.

    I currently have a BT router with several BT Wi-Fi discs dotted around the home. If I was to change over to this EE 4gee (or 5gee) setup, would I still be able to use my BT Wi-Fi discs or would they become obsolete?

    • @freename

      Black disks / "Halo" label:
      Not reusable - they require a BT Hub 6 or BT Smart Hub 2.
      These disks are sold as an add on subscription service to their broadband contracts and need returning at the end of your BT subscription.
      White disks:
      These disks have the label "whole home" and can be reused with another router as long as you own them outright. The main disk will need to connect to the other router using a network cable.

    How do you change the nat type

    • @freename
      @freename  Год назад

      It's not possible. EE and most other mobile networks in the UK and across the world use CGNAT (Carrier Grade NAT) which shares an IP with hundreds of other customers. This means inbound port forwarding isn't possible which in turn will affect your NAT type. Get fixed line broadband from someone and ask the question or confirm from the provider that they do not use CGNAT before ordering.

      No, not with an EE SIM as EE use Carrier Grade NAT (CGNAT) so even if you could open ports at the router, they won't be open at the CGNAT equipment in EEs data center.

    • @freename

      Not a chance. Not many consumer / home routers support being a VPN client. You would need to use your own router with VPN support or just run the VPN software on your phone, tablet or computer.

      @@freename thank you for the info, can I run VPN from laptop then Ethernet cable from laptop to PlayStation?

    • @freename
      @freename  Год назад

      If your VPN software allows "internet connection sharing" then yes. But I wouldn't recommend playing or downloading games via a VPN. It will almost certainly be slower and higher and less stable ping.

    • @TheMrcrisstoff
      @TheMrcrisstoff Год назад

      @@freename ah really! I’m using express VPN so not sure if they allow it or not? Just trying to get faster speeds and better ping from a 4g router that’s the issue I have.
      Do you have any suggestions on how to boost them?

    • @freename
      @freename  Год назад

      A VPN isn't likely to give you faster speeds for most stuff. Torrents may be faster, I'd expect everything else to be slower (maybe not by much). Ping will only get higher due to the data having to go from the mobile provider, to the VPN provider and then to the destination rather than direct to the destination. There could be obscure routing issues which can crop up where specific destinations might be slightly lower ping via the VPN but it's rare. Definitely not worth putting a lot of effort into piping your console down the VPN.
      If you want stable pings and speeds, land line or full fibre based broadband is the way to go. Mobile is convenient and might be cheap but it can be incredibly variable for performance.

    • @freename

      Not if you are on EE. Everyone is behind Carrier Grade NAT (CGNAT). You don't have a public IP address on the router for inbound ports / port forwarding to work.

      @@timothyv9841 You could.. 1) Use another router which supports L2TP and buy an L2TP service from Andrews & Arnold. This is essentially like a VPN and tunnels all your data over EE to Andrews & Arnold where you have a static public IP (or even a range of multiple IP addresses if they still do that for free).
      2) Move to the mobile network Three. I believe that one of the APN (access point names) on Three gives you a public IP. (It changes each time you reconnect though).

    • @timothyv9841
      @timothyv9841 2 года назад

      @@freename thanks so much for your advise, for a tech noob like me how hard do you think option 1 would be? Like should I try it out or just say fuck it and cancel EE to try 3?

    • @freename
      @freename  2 года назад +1

      Depends on the price of each. The L2TP option is definitely the most technically complicated and you might need help from a forum like ispreview or thinkbroadband. You will end up with a static IP address (or even multiple) and IPv6! I expect Andrews & Arnold don't have a long contract too so easy to try it with little risk other than a router cost.
      Changing provider is the simplest but also depends on the cost and contract terms, also check with a forum or someone else with the service that they actually do get a public IP when using the correct APN setting.
