    My 2001 Ram 2500 has the 5.9L and it is the best. Plenty of power and I get 19-21 mpg. I will never give this one up. It has the best of the things i like. 6 speed manual, loud diesel noise., no annoying seat belt light or alarm, CD and cassette. Just what a 76 yr old guy needs.

      My neighbour's 5.9 12 valve was severely damaged at about 100,000 kms by the killer dowel pin. He was lucky that it didn't destroy the whole engine, lots did. Some whole engines were replaced by Chrysler if the engine went while still under warranty.
      It's weird that this serious build fault is rarely mentioned when the Cummins name comes up.

    • @edb3877
      @edb3877 14 дней назад

      @@glenbreaks5448 Wasn't there a big issue with some of the 5.9L Cummins engine blocks? The number "53" keeps tickling my memory somehow.
      Other than this and the issue you mention, Cummins diesel engines are great engines for towing and hauling with decent fuel mileage.

    • @glenbreaks5448
      @glenbreaks5448 12 дней назад

      @edb3877 yes, those engines with the 53 block tended to crack and that was it for them. It's kind of funny that the stock 5.9s had these two fatal flaws that people tend to overlook. I suspect that's because of the name.
      Meanwhile someone puts a 175 hp chip into an otherwise stock 6.0 and thinks it's a POS because the head gasket blows! ( not fatal)

    So basically consolidated diesel hit the pinnacle in 1984 when Tenneco and Cummins decided to engineer greatness. 3.9, 5.9, and 8.3s just seem to be everywhere, just working away, clocking up the hours. 2 stroke Detroits did a lot for America in the 60s and 70s, but Cummins sure left a big mark on diesel history.

    The Cummins 5.9 gets some bad press for oil leaks, noise, and some turbo issues, but in 40 years of truck leasing and medium duty sales, in my opinion is is one of the best engines ever produced. Cheap to maintain, cheaper to operate, NO electronics, and if it was in a proper application, I'd seen some at 400k miles still running strong!

    Brother, I’m a 34 year GM tech at a dealership. Diesel retired recently, but the Duramax is the worst diesel engine ever made for the pin in the crankshaft or constantly breaking crankshaft constantly breaking camshaft in the new six cylinder Duramax diesel with the small time and chain in the back of the motor it is a total disaster so no Duramax should not even be in your lineup.

    • @glenbreaks5448
      @glenbreaks5448 12 дней назад

      @stevenbrooks1243 I had a 2000 7.3 purchased new then traded it in on a 2003 6.0 which I still have (22years) The 6.0 has needed nothing until recently , just oil changes.
      Last month I renewed all of the engine sensors with OEM stuff and put a new high pressure oil pump on it as well. It's good for another 22 years now, even if I'm not!
      I liked the 7.3 but much prefer the 6.0. It has way more power than the 7.3, is quieter and gets a bit better fuel mileage, especially at high speed. The 5 speed Torqshift with tow haul linked to the 6.0 turbo braking is also big step up from the 7.3 auto 4r100, which wasn't a great trans.

I've seen guys driving these and the truck is falling apart around an engine that still purrs like a kitten and works like a Clydesdale. If you stay on top of the maintenance, these engines will basically run forever pre emissions / EGR.

      It’s tied on the 5.9 and 7.3 in my opinion but then it goes down to the trans and then the stability of the body/chassi and with both the 5.9 and the 7.3 having there own issues in the trans the 7.3 takes the win in my opinion with the body not rattling apart

    Daily driving my 7.3L SD and it's better than when it came off the factory floor. Wouldn't trade it for the world. Now if they would just have made transmissions with the gears they have today, it would be unstoppable. The transmission (especially the auto's), is the least reliable thing about it. From what I've heard the 6 speed manual helps a lot, but a proper automatic with 7-10 gears would put all others out of business. ;-)

    Have a 97 w/5,9, in a 2500 dodge 2wd. Hard pull with a 6500 lb trailer gets 18.5 mpg where ever it travels, hills, flats, desert. Keep her down around 1800 with a 5 spd. Barely broke in as some would say. No modifications.......Why? Do not need to upset the apple cart as most will do. Will definitely out live me at 69yrs young...!

    Definitely 1 Diesel engine was left of this list , it is the almighty Toyota 12HT !!!! In my opinion comes in a very close second behind the 6BT Cummins, I have 1 in a Landcruiser that has travelled over 750 000 km without a rebuild.

    Miss my 17 f350 with the brute 6.7 but not the $800 a month truck payment. I sold it 2 1/2 years ago and took the leftover change after the bank payoff and hunted down an 07 ram 3500 5.9 with a six speed manual. I can tell she’s getting tired at 210k . When I had to replace my clutch my boss said, I bet you wish you could go back to a newer truck. I said nope. I’d rather spend a small portion of that kinda money making mine new again,better than new. Wish it wasn’t computer controlled. Wish I’d order an install a dam muffler to. Five inch straight pipe gets on my nerves and makes me miss that silent 17 ford.

    1. 5.9 6BT 89-98 12v w/manuel Trans but was put on the worst body pick ever.
    2. 7.3 power stroke put on the best body pick ever.
    3. 5.9 24v again not a good body pick up.
    4. 6.6 Duramax LBZ put on a good looking body pick up.
    After these you make your pick between the newer models on GM, Ram and Ford

    The Ford 6.7 has problems,one is the CP4 pump that Ford needs to do away with.The CP4 blows up sending metal shavings in the fuel system which everything in the fuel system gets replaced.Ford has a class action lawsuit against them on this.The aftermarket has a kit to remove this pump and replace it with something else. The 1989 to 1998 5.9 Cummins,killer dowl pin and this is a real easy fix. Sell a kit to fix it and you can make it by making a plate with a hole in it for the inner timing cover bolt to secure it in

      European diesels have some pretty sweet offerings, they just aren’t common enough in North America, nor are they regularly offered in passenger vehicles and pick ups. Duetz, Sisu, Scania, all have some pretty reliable offerings, but are mostly off road

    Come on braghung on an engine that breaks 300,000 mi for a diesel. The 6.7 Cummins doesn't even compare to the 7.3 powerstroke.
