Homemade Bow Press -Part 5
In part five I machine the threaded rod and an aluminium dust cover for the outer thrust bearing.
I had to machine the threaded rod as the thrust bearings I had have a smaller internal diameter then the rod. This part could easily be made with no machining at all if the thrust bearings are the right size. Also the smaller threaded end of the rod could be done away with and just have the handle secured by another large nut.
Off camera I machined a bronze bushing to go between the shaft and the end cap.

Just kicking around and looking for ideas. I have a wood lathe and was thinking of using it, with some kind of DIY jaw and tailstock pieces, as a bow press. I'm not sure a tailstock is sufficient to 'press' up to 70+ lbs, especially a wood lathe. Probably more likely to damage or prematurely wear out the lathe.

Hi Mate. It's hard to say. What I'd recommend is to have a look at a trailer jockey wheel. They have most of the parts needed to make a press, i.e. acme thread, thrust bearings, etc, even a handle! Appreciate your comment.
