  • Homemade Bow Press - Part 6.
In part six I finish the threaded rod by cutting two "flats" on either side of the shaft. These flats are to allow the cranking arm (which is attached to the handle) to key together with the shaft. Using this "key" negates the need to over torque the final nut, which would place unnecessary pressure on the thrust bearings.
I then proceed to make the cranking handle/grip out of some scrap aluminium tube. The handle is machined at both ends to accommodate press fit bearings, and then some basic detail in the form of grip lines added. I would have preferred to use a knurling tool for the detail/grip.
I then machine the handle axle/bolt.
Finally I fabricate the bow press finger mounts. These are simply a tab or mount for the fingers to bolt to.

*I did mention during the video to ALWAYS roll up your sleeves. I am actually ashamed that I didn't, it's very dangerous. Left the footage in to show what not to do!
*I also should be using a cutting aid when using the vertical bandsaw, rather than just holding the workpiece with my fingers.

Hey brother, I really don’t want to spend 5 or 600 on a half ass press that isn’t as nice as the one you made. Is there anyway you would be willing to sell me some shop drawings or something I could use to get the complicated stuff like the threaded rod/handle assembly done somewhere? My buddy has a little fab shop here in LA I could probably get the rest done. I would love to buy the rod and handle assembly from you if you’d be willing to make another one.

Hi Mate, Appreciate your comment. I'll definitely make a set of drawings one of these days. keep an eye out. Have you thought about using a trailer jockey wheel? They have most of the parts needed to make a press, i.e. acme thread, thrust bearings and even a handle! Apologies for the delayed reply.

It's no wonder they cost $$$, all the time to make parts.
