  • A remake of a now deleted version of this video showcasing how the artistry of Sonic has changed over the years. Ranging not from the writing, but from the music, the designs, the cinematics, etc, and the overall aura Sonic games used to have. How the series went from something that I thought was very cool/emotional and teen oriented, into what essentially became a children's cartoon. Not just the games, but even other mediums such as TV shows and movies. And I would say this is still relevant today, as Frontiers-while clearly trying to go back to old routes-still isn't really up there for me personally (for reasons you can find in my tier list video if you so choose to watch it).
All in all I just miss when Sonic had primarily Japanese devs/writers....

early 2000s sonic was cool, in general the early 2000s was a very experimental period of time for pretty much everyone and everything

I couldn't agree more with what you said about preferring style and atmosphere way more. You can have all the story and writing you want... But to design good style and atmosphere as close to realism as they did takes someone who can simulate and emulate really well, something story/writing can't do on it's own. Every time you look at the beautiful animations and wonderfully orchestrated worlds, those grains of sand, the grass that is blown in the wind, aren't driven by simple writing and story direction, they're alive!
The part in Zero Gravity where they are going through the tunnel and all the sound waves are flowing, interacting, and reverbing, like they have a will of their own is a perfect example of atmosphere.

It’s a little less technical for me, but yes. Visuals, music, designs, action, acting, etc for me are all what truly breathe life into a piece of media. No matter how good something may be written, it’s not gonna matter to me if I don’t feel moved by its artistry. And conversely, if something *isn’t* written entirely cohesively, the artistry can more than make up for it. That’s why I love a lot of the 2000’s stuff despite the hate most of those games get. They were just so cool, soulful and cinematic compared to most everything else today which for me just doesn’t give me the same emotions. Not even Frontiers which everyone has been praising.
It’s something that I wish more people could relate to, but most everyone only cares about story/writing and hold it above everything else as if it makes everything else obsolete. It’s very upsetting…

@@anomaly395 Yeah I get what you mean, the atmosphere for those games is something that really drew me into the series and is what I remember fondly from my childhood. I wonder how the future would've been like if Sonic 06 hadn't been rushed so badly and had been a proper reboot of the series.
I know we haven't seen much of it yet but I'm wondering how you feel about Sonic x Shadow generations. They seem to be embracing all of Shadow's past so far with the visuals also being a clear step up from Frontiers.

@@Azurald55 I made a community post not too long ago sharing my thoughts on it if you'd like to read that.
But if I had to give a summary, to me it's not looking like it's gonna be much different from Frontiers. I think it's cool that they're embracing STH 2005 and they're clearly trying to please people like me, but there's a couple things bringing it down for me like the fact that it's gonna be Kirk Thornton's Shadow, and the absence of CG cinematics (the in-game stuff looks cool, but if ALL the cutscenes are gonna be like that then.. yeah). I'm also not feeling the logo or the music that was played in the trailer (although of course the latter can change since we have yet to hear the rest of the OST).

@@anomaly395 I understand what you mean and think it's a sad consequence of the failure of the dark era. Sega has been trying so hard to go away from that style during the 2010s that it's going to be hard to go back.
Most of the people who made those games just aren't here anymore. I miss having cgi cutscenes too, they really gave Sonic games a cinematic flair to them and made them feel so much grander. Hopefully they make use of them again in the next mainline Sonic game.
What I'm most excited for is the boss battles because the Super Sonic battles in Frontiers was probably the highlight for me and giving Shadow something like that would fit really well.
As for the voices, I love Jason as both Sonic and Shadow so I'm also biased but the voice actors now have already cemented their legacy to me with their 10+ years with the series being one of the worst era for me.
Like Kirk's a great voice actor but his Shadow was the worst one because of the mischaracterisation. It isn't his fault but something that's stuck with him now.
However, Shadow wasn't really used much during the 2010s so Kirk voice isn't as strong in my memories like Roger's so I'm still gonna give him a second chance.

@@Azurald55 Yeah, you're completely right in those first two paragraphs. That's why I don't really have any expectations these days. I'm just waiting until something resonates with me.
The Frontiers battles were also a highlight for me, and I agree that I'd certainly like to see Shadow perform that kind of combat. It'd be crazy to see how he utilizes his chaos abilities in moves like that.
As for the rest, yeah I understand that. Personally I'm just not a fan of his voice in general. I've always been about voices more than performances (it's like the doorway for everything else), and none of the 2010's cast outside of Tails have ever grown on me despite their now long history. At least as far as the mainline games (I like them in the Boom TV show). Like they're not bad VA's, but the X cast for me will always be the definitive voices of the mainline characters (and I'd admit that even they didn't always have the greatest voice direction in the start).

    Shadow the Hedgehog-Sonic And The Black Knight(dark era) >>>Sonic Colors-Sonic Forces(modern era)
Sonic Frontiers return to dark era vibes, but with new trailer about sonic x shadow generations, I think, dark era vibes still stronger

12:38-13:10 This is why I’m skeptical of Sonic Movie 3, I don’t want Shadow flossing, dancing, farting or acting like an MCU character. I think Disney-era MCU left too much of an influence on pop culture so now every Hollywood studio wants to replicate its style. Sadly including the studio that the MCU was born with, Paramount.

It's funny you say that because Sonic 2 actually uses a track from Ant-Man & The Wasp. Like straight up. So you might have a point there lol.
But yeah. Honestly after the sequel, the short, and now the Knuckles show, I kind of fell off from the Sonic movies. Just too kiddy and quite frankly generic for my taste. They say Sonic 3 is gonna be "darker" and more like Adventure 2, but I don't buy it for a second, and I think people are overhyping it. It's clear the movies unlike the games are trying to cater more strictly towards children. I'm still gonna see it out of pure curiosity, but I'm gonna wait for it to come out on digital or something.

@@SuperFreddy64-mp5ew Eh it feels too late at this point (not in the sense that it can't be done, but that I feel the movies have already established what they are. Especially when coupled with the short and the Knuckles series). Although I'd love if it was like that Project Shadow fan film if you've seen that. It's not 10/10, but I like the direction it takes more than the official Sonic movies. Made a community post about it actually.
