- /!\ The picture does not correspond to the video, the autofocus of my camera was jamming. So I prefer let you show a steady picture instead of getting sick!
Starting the AlliedSignal 331-500 of a 777, to do a leak check, after the check of the 5 magnetic chips plugs installed on the engine.
Run up was done with APU doors closed, then opened for inspection. Авто/Мото
This APU must be powerful enough to start the most powerful jet engines
In fact on the -200’s we start both engines at the same time. (Rolls Trent). Not enough smash to start both GE90’s at once on the -300’s.
Turbofan Engine is Starts at 300 Gigawatt High Voltage Electricity.

@@MhkhQ8 I like macOS better lol. My hatred for windows has grown over the past year.
lol u can try windows :)
@@MhkhQ8 I have for many years. And I tried macOS when I got this computer (I had used macOS a little before and I really liked it so I wanted to see how it was if I lived with it) and I like macOS much better. It's just easier to use. I can list reasons if u want
The sound of jet engine (in this case the APU) never fails to facinates me especially when "counting" the pitching up sound of ever faster spining of the turbines!
This is where my non aviation friends say where the engines are. Technically, they’re not wrong.
Right. I dont know much but just kinda learned this engine is to keep power running to help things function. But it's not the engine that thrusts the plane.
@@Lightblue2222 WAAAAAAAAAAAA?????
I grew up being an avgeek, but i didn't learn about these untill i was much older
Oh, i didn't know that. So this is like a generator or something?
@@youarereadingmyname the APU is basically a mini jet engine that keeps the instruments running when the real engines aren’t on. Ideally, there’d be some sort of ground source to provide power in place of the APU, but that’s not always the case.
Ahhh the sound of an airplane coming to life
This is heard in the jet bridge near the aircraft door
The iconic bladed tail cone of the 777😀
Every engineer with any kind of degree knows pointy things are faster
@@mk6315 That is true but only for supersonic speeds. At subsonic speeds, rounded shapes are more aerodynamically streamlined. The best shape is elliptical or parabolic for any speed below Mach 1.
@@ChrisZoomER But do these facts also apply to pointy trailing edges? curious
@@OninDynamics Trailing edges always have to be sharp and pointy as to create the least amount of wake turbulence behind the plane regardless of speed. Actually, the most drag that effects cars is the vacuum they leave behind them because the constantly air has to fill the space from where the car used to be, the drag is so high because the back of a typical car is flat. Cars that are meant to be fast like the Formula 1 don't have backs that taper off into blades for that reason. That's why you'll find that the single most aerodynamic shape for subsonic speeds looks like a teardrop.
@@ChrisZoomER Aha, confirmed my inferences + the specifics (hmm maybe it's the low air pressure behind that slows things down... oh wait)
Thanks for the bit!
That vibration though when the engines spools to max and can here the APU humming
I love the sound of turbines starting & the smell of Jet A/DF II or whatever the cocktail of the day is. 😊👍
Worked on APU'S & other appliances/systems for about 20 years.
The sound is absolutely beautiful
Every home needs a turbine APU that starts up in the mornings
Love jet noise ^_^ .
Ah~ I really miss this Auxiliary Power Unit (APU) sound. Make me chills a bit when hear that starting
What a beautyful planus!
ahh see what you did there!! Funny!
😂
Airplane Auxiliary Power Unit Starts at 0:08
Fun fact, these have more power than most small GA planes. Usually double the power. And all to power auxiliaries on a plane lol
(And to start the plane without a start cart)
Everytime i thought that the main engines creates this incredible sound
I worked on H-3's in the Air Force Davis-Monthan, 1979. Our unit was defunded and most of the helicopters were put into boneyard storage. The remaining went to Kirtland AFB. We had to clean up (fix) every discrepancy before the A/C was transferred. We had one APU (International Harvester Solar) torch like crazy. I started it one night and I saw the fire guard's face turn all orange from the long plume exiting the exhaust. The engine shop came out and swapped it from a helicopter that was going into storage. I never found out what caused the problem.
Must have been impressive!!
Maybe residual fuel not properly drained in the chamber, or excessive fuel during startup!
0:08 school computer turning on
The APU in this thing is probably bigger than the engines of the jet I fly lmao
Summary the engines make the noise and the APU gets her tight ...hahahaha
Eargasm, gawd I love it
Sounds like a build up in a dubstep song
That's a melody....👍😎👂✈
agreed, and the exhaust smells like fine perfume
Loud as hell but sounds like a fighter jet starting up
I remember how it smells too, smells fresher and better than Dior Fahrenheit.
I like to think Pattinson's Batman installled a modified APU into his Batmobile.
I hear a very similar sound from 331-200 APUs in the test cell where I work
and finally the earth has stopped spinning o.o
Beautiful 👍👍👍❤️❤️❤️
nice photo
Thx
Sounds just like my PlayStation when I load up cod
That’s a good sound
Aaaah yessss my engineering laptop when I open notepad
Imagine how fast the the poor little gears are turning in the accessory drive.
Yes. APUs are operating with 60 000 rpm. This must reduced down to 3000 rpm to the electric generator and hydraulics.
Oh this is why plane on ground are so freking loud
Still pic, the clouds don't move when you skip along the bar at the bottom.
Explanation in description. If you don't read it, its not my fault.. :)
Fair play, sorry dude! Sounds fab...gets louder and louder!
no prob! ;) thx
sounds like my vacuum cleaner times 10,000.
Seriously, back then i was thinking that's the exhaust of the engine
When the Minecraft app icon looks a lot like the start switch
can i fit it in my wrx is the question
I want one in my Dodge 3/4 ton!
Methinks you'll need a tad larger fuel tank...or two...
WOW
Side tip cat back exhaust like Silverado😂😂😂
Und woher kommt Luft für die Mini-Turbine ?
so, what is next?
only sound?

I don’t knowed that the APU have start up sound
Does the apu run during flight?
Not in normal operations 🙂
What if the APU is not deployed after the full stop of aircraft?
The aircraft is living on battery. You cannot use the aircondition and other energy hungry systems. During the boardingprocess of an airliner the APU is providing the energy for comfort of the passengers.
Did you know that the APU of 777 will consume more fuel than the engines of the ATR-72?
I did not know that. 😎
@@yoyoyoyoshua False
@@RamakrishnanSRM nope it's true
@@yoyoyoyoshua The Boeing Everett factory has an interior volume of a little under 500,000,000 cubic feet, and a GE90 at takeoff thrust sucks about 2,000,000 cubic feet of air per minute; that works out to roughly four hours to 'suck' all the air out of the building.
Rip to those who using headphones 🎧 hahaha
I did 😂
Back when APU had piston engines, could they provide an equivalent of bleed air?
I think so as early pressurised airliners were piston engined
No .Too big and to heavy. In early times of military jet aviation v8 carengines over 100 hp perfornance were used to starting ub the Jetengines. They were housed in weeled compartments connected with thick hoses to the aircraft. Often the carengines failed during their task. Soon they were replaced by gasturbines.
I wonder if they have to start the main engines before they can start the APU
No they use the battery to start the apu and the apu to start the engines
No they start the APU before they start the engines. The APU, hence the name, provides power and keeps systems alive when the engines aren't on.
@@rylans.5365 APU stands for Auxiliary Power Unit. It provides Electrical power and Bleed Air on the ground and in flight.
Its uses include:
- Engine Start
- Air Conditioning
- Electrical Power
- Bleed Air
- uses on the ground if GPU isn't available to provide electricity to the Airplane prior to power down procedures.

yes
Yes. It is indeed 🙂

Explained in video description! ;)
where is it taking air in?

So that is what that hole is...
Its a still.
Explanation in description. :)
I was told that the hole was for dumping waste water from the toliets in mid air
Lol no there is I think a pressure release but it's farther forward at the bottom of the fuselage.
1. The hole is the APU exhaust. 2. Waste from airplanes aren't dumped mid air.

I didn't even know that the APU sounds like a gas turbine at starting up.
It's because it is a gas turbine engine! 😉
What is Apu ?
Auxiliary Power Unit. Provides power for various needs in the aircraft, other than thrust.

Where does it suck the air
The air intake is on the top of the fuselage, just aft right of the rudder 🙂

How would you power the lights and electronics and start the first main engine? Big lead-acid battery?
Does the apu run during flight?
No it's turned off.
