  • Test Run of Rolls Royce Artouste APU Engine. This unit originally came out of an RAF VC-10. The turbine disc glows a bit under load even though the TGT is within limit. I think too much air may be bypassing the air-delivery butterfly valve on the combustion chamber. Nice little engine!!

    One thing many American dudes and UK blokes can agree on: There’s nothing more (ironically) tranquil and life giving than turning a few wrenches and then proudly firing up whatever loud thing it is you were working on.

    Very cool. Here in Detroit,we still like to run our big block and small block V8's on stands in our driveways.Even with open headers we don't wear hearing protection, but running them does help drown out the sound of the gunshots.

I tinker around with 30-60mm Turbochargers and when you start getting to the RPM’s that this thing is capable of its mind boggling. The cargo planes I flew in during the Viet Nam war had a monster turbine generator built right into the aircraft. They were C-97 four engine trans oceanic cargo planes, now very obsolete. The turbine was about the size of a VW bug. It SCREAMED from start to shut down at well over 150 decibels at around 15000 RPM. Sometimes it would be run for hours as us mechanics performed various work on the four engines. Each engine had a 28 volt starter that needed to be cranked and cranked. It was a form of torture. My ears rang for hours after the turbine was shut down.

    • @rachels209

      Yes and no. It can also be the air cycle machines that are utilising the bleed air from the apu to provide air conditioning to the plane. If the noise is coming from the tail area, chances are it’s the apu. If the noise is coming from under the fuselage to wing area its probably the air con packs.

    Those were used on military VC10s and in the beginning they had a habit of blowing up. Originally a Turbomeca Artouste then a Bristol Siddeley Artouste. I understand that ZD241 has acquired a refurbished Artouste.

    VERY COOL. I’m pretty sure when people speak of “turbine generated electricity” and it’s efficiency, this is not the turbine they are talking about though 😄

    Here in SF, CA we're waiting for the Big One. I can see this would be great for power loss!! The neighborhood would be in such awe; turn all the house lights on and impress (depress??) them with the power racket. Cool. We're near Concord Buchannan Field, so we're just emulating an idling Citation jet!

    Guys, listen to me very carefully, please! I'm an old Avionics guy, and I've also done lots of restoration work.
    #1.: *_Please...,_* From now on: *DO NOT* keep a Jerry Can full of Fuel on a Folding Table next to your Engine! It's amazing that you didn't have a Fire! I'm glad you didn't.
    #2.: *Build a Proper Test Stand!* Seriously, you spent alot of money, and put in lots of love and time to get that old thing running! Don't destroy it, nor hurt yourselves in an accidental-runaway!
    #3.: *Build a Mesh-Grill Cover for the Intake!* This goes along with the Test-Stand. The last thing you want is to have a F.O.D. hazard of some Pebble, or even a Gum Wrapper, completely destroy your engine!
    Nice work otherwise, keep at it!

    • @angelisreal
      @angelisreal 6 лет назад +3

      Actually, that woyld be bit of a fib. Jet turbine engines propel the plane forward, the APU (Auxillary Power Unit) provides power to the craft until the crew switches to engine power. That's why (presuming you have flown in a jet aircraft before) there is a pause in the cabin air as the engines are lit and spooling up to idle speed. Typically, if it's a twin engined jet, the systems can be run from one engine, after switching over from the APU. The point being that this is a APU, not a jet engine.
