This isn't a spoiler, we've known that since the original series. And Unalaq makes that very clear in this episode if you just look closer at what he says.
I'm not very good at explaining, but when you meditate into the spirit world, you leave your body behind thus not being able to bend when entering the spirit world but when you walk through the portal into the spirit world. You'll still have your body, so you're able to bend whatever element while in the spirit world. if all that made sense.
Unalaq basically tells us in that same episode (the reason he thinks he can open the portal from the indie now is because he has his body, and what does he do with his body to open the portal: bend water). And we learn it through Aang in the first season of Avatar: The last Airbender when he tries (and fail) to bend in the spirit world.
Because they only watched it once, they never had the time to digest and obsess over the series since they're just watching everything once in a continuous flow until Korra is done.
11:13 Calvin got it all wrong lol Where the tree and the portals are is literally the spirit world. And when your body is in the spirit world you can use your bending but when it's just your spirit you can't bend.
I think Vaatu said "It was I that broke through the divide that separated the plain of spirits from the material world." For me, that implies that he was the first one to open the spirit portals long ago and leave the Spirit World and that only he and Raava have that power. Not that he created the Spirit World. That is why the Avatar has that power because of their fusion with Raava.
The Spirit World has always been its own separate plane. If you listen closely to the previous episode, they say that spirits crossed through the portals into the physical realm slowly over time back in Wan's day. One portal crosses planes at the physical North Pole, one at the physical South Pole. Spirits and humans could freely cross planes as long as the portals were open, it's just that the spirits overtook the physical world, presumably since humans couldn't coexist peacefully with them.
I think it's just a little confusing because the two portals are on opposite sides of the planet in the physical world, but right next to each other in the Spirit World, which makes it seem like some kind of in-between zone.
So if the portals were closed from Wan's to Korra's eras, where did all the spirits that exist in the physical world come from? E.g. All the angry spirits like Hae Bai who attacked when the forests were destroyed.
Well, probably because of thre same reason why Humans can still go to the spirit world (especially considering it should be easier without a real body)
+STAY Young To use Hae Bai as an example: he only attacked the village in the days (possibly a week, but no more) leading up to the Winter Solstice. It was stated that the barrier between the Physical World and the Spirit World grows thin, and eventually disappears outright for a single day, as the Solstices approach. So that would be how spirits cross over, I'd say: when the barrier is weakened for some reason.
"oh my gosh! what is the spirit gives Boomi bending!?" nah that sounds crazy also Calvin have these spirit portals all wrong! the spirit portal in the south leads to the spirit world to the place with the tree, the other closed one is the one from the northern pole! it doesn't go "physical world" -> "place with tree/Vaatu" -> "spirit world" but that would bean that Aaron in right so he's going to deny it forever :P
Something I realized, if Korra or everyone else just did absolutely nothing at this point on Unalaq would have failed anyway since later he doesn't get the ransom to force korra to open the portal with, so Unalaq ultimately won on pure luck. Unalaq just sucks.
They could just went to the southpole and closed the Portal from the outside. They get Lin, Mako, maybe Tonraq, possible even Katara, go there just bust through the defense and close it. That would be so much easier... but then the story wouldn't had gone in the way it did, there wouldn't be airbenders because the convergence was skipped, Zaheer couldn't break out and free his friends. They could not harm Korra. She would not be lame for years and Kuvira would not have any cause to reunite the earth kingdom. All this built on their decision to close the portal from the inside at this certain point in time. As much as I hate that Korra loses her connection to Aang and 10000 years of knowledge, it was an important step. Like Wan changed the world, she did it again. After all there was no place on the Souther Airtemple for a Korra statue.
in this universe, the spirit world is like lots of little islands all connected together, each place is vastly different to the next in both architecture and environment, with various spirit beings living in these 'islands' like mini kingdoms, the area that vattu is held where the portals are located is the very center of the spirit world.
Where Vaatu is imprisoned is a nexus where the human world and the spirit world overlap. There are a bunch of such nexuses, but the polar ones are the primary/strongest ones. The swamp and the Library from ATLA were others. The further from a nexus, the further from the other world, so you get deeper into the human world the further you are from a nexus while in the human world, and the opposite occurs the further from a nexus in the spirit world.
Avatar Wan already said in the last episode that he won't let anyone enter the spirit world physically which means the portals are the only way to get in with your body. That's why he closed the portals.
Finally....done with Studio Perrot.....glad that they could sub while Mir got back into Korra production, but you see the major difference if you are into animation.
Yes, there is a difference between entering the Spirit World through a Spirit Portal or by meditating. Generally, the difference is that one way leaves your body behind in the Physical World, whereas the other one allows you to actually travel to the Spirit World in body *as well* as in spirit. The more practical difference, however, is Bending. Remember back in _Avatar: The Last Airbender_ when Aang used to enter the Spirit World? He couldn't Bend when he was there. But Unalaq and the twins can clearly Water Bend; this is because they entered by Spirit Portal and not by meditation or some such.
Cant wait for next episode, and season 3 omg. The hype is real. I wish they did this twice a week i just watched the whole season 3 for the first time today and its so amazing
Iroh saw Roku's Dragon because it was the Winter Solstice, which is a time when the plane of the Spirit World and Physical World align. That's why Sokka and the village entered into the Spirit World extremely easily, without meditating.
+DeQuan. Spoilers below. Yeah that is really strange. When I first watched the show I never even considered Bumi getting bending because I thought being a non-bender is what separated Bumi from his siblings and yet somehow Calvin brings up three or four times the idea the he will somehow unlock bending. My guess is he watched a clip of Bumi air-bending somewhere.
the difference between Unalaq and Korra in the spritit world is that Unalaq has his bending since he himself enters the spirit world through the portal. while in Korra's case, only her spirit is in the spirit world therefore she doesn't has her bendings and the spirit world is VAST, huge! That's why instead of saying Korra is "here", Vaatu said Korra is in the Spirit World. The portals are in the spirit world
For such a smart guy, why does Calvin get things like the Spirit Portal wrong? It's simple, yet the crew just overcomplicate things. 25:22 Arggh, Aaron! They've mentioned it so many times. There are no evil spirits, only light and dark spirits.
Unlike humans, spirits can't disassociate into two different forms. Humans can meditate into the spirit world and leave behind their physical body. For spirits, the physical and spiritual are one and the same. A spirit couldn't meditate its way into the mortal world.
Vaatu didn't create the spirit world. The Human World and the Spirit World are just separate universes. A human can either physically travel to the Spirit World through a portal, or simply send their astral form there while meditating. If you go through physically, you can bend, whereas if you just meditate your astral form there, you can't bend. All Vaatu did was break through the divide and presumably create the spirit portals and spirits went through them, eventually filling the human world. Spirits can also temporarily manifest themselves in the physical world and even take things back to the spirit world (like Hei Bai). But Iroh's ability to see the spirit dragon was exclusive to him. At one point in his life, he journeyed into the spirit world (presumably by meditating, though it's unclear), so it stands to reason that he'd have a unique connection to the spirits.
I think this is probably the reason why tens and wasn't giving korra the spiritual advice she needed because he didn't have a good spiritual center himself
I actually like that Varrick is a badguy. The whole diconomy was presented at the begining of Korras uncle representing spirituallity in conflict with industrialism and materialism, which in turn is represented by Varrick. By showing them both in an evil light it shows how they are both neutral concepts that can use both evil and good. My issue is that the spirituality side of things seems much more poorly represented as Unaloc is never as likable as Varrick and spirituality in Korra seems to translate to havining magic powers as opposed to being a sensitive enlightened person of faith or who understands aspects of hummanity that require deep introspection and open minded observation of life.
When you enter the spirit world through the portals, you enter it with your body so you have your bending there. When you enter it through meditation, you exist in the spirit world as a spirit and leave your body behind in the real world so you dont have any bending. The advantage of entering as a spirit is that you can just do it any time any where, where as if want to enter with your body you have to travel across the world to the spirit portal. Also as a spirit they have some extra abilities like moving like a spirit(teleporting)
Spirits can be both states, phyisical and non physical, so thay can solidify to some extent. The thing woth the spirit world is that you can enter it in two ways: physically, entering through the portals or spiritually, by meditation. The advantage of entering physically is that benders can use their bending. Using bending in the spirit world wasn't possible before because people didnt enter it through the portals
Going through the portal lets you bring your physical body into the spirit world and thus you can bend. Meditating to go in only sends your spirit and you can't bend.
Finally got rid of ugly Studio Pierrot animation! From this point on, the whole series only gets better rapidly. Looking forward to next week, hope you are going to like it 💜
I think it's cause they entered through the southern spirit portal with their physical bodies allowing them to use their bending, where as Jinora and Korra entered with their spirt's only and that's why they can't use bending.
It would've made much more sense to hold off the invasion of the south. Your whole plan relies on the Avatar trusting you so you should probably not antagonize her by invading her home before she opens the portal.
I'm just nitpicking. I already scrolled down through the comments just to make sure someone didn't already point this out, because it's annoying to have a hundred people tell you the same thing. I stopped scrolling when I got fed up, because there are hundreds of comments. I didn't see it, but if someone already said this, I'm sorry. (Does anyone read these comments anymore anyways?) Yin = darkness | Yang = light; philosophically, yin is considered female and yang male. The creators switched the "genders" of the two spirits, respectively.
When your body is in the spirit world you can use your bending but when it's just your spirit you can't bend
TheBoldenb This.
jinovydoesanime It was literally just stated in this episode
jinovydoesanime not spoilers since they watched avatar the last airbender
you're fucking stupid jinovydoesanime they mention that in the last airbender stop being an ass hat
This isn't a spoiler, we've known that since the original series. And Unalaq makes that very clear in this episode if you just look closer at what he says.
"Iroh went into the spirit world."
"I hate that he's(Varrick) a bad guy."
"What if the spirits give Bumi bending?"
This is why I love these reactions.
At this point, I believe I give up on wondering how they come up with these
Mokkari77 ikr I can't wait for them to watch S3
Shadow Phoenix Same here.
Mokkari77 *spoiler alert!!!!*
They're just so good at predicting!!!!!
Mokkari77 "It's good to see you, Twinkle-toes."
I'm not very good at explaining, but when you meditate into the spirit world, you leave your body behind thus not being able to bend when entering the spirit world but when you walk through the portal into the spirit world. You'll still have your body, so you're able to bend whatever element while in the spirit world. if all that made sense.
Where do they tell this information?
Where do they tell this information?

And we learn it through Aang in the first season of Avatar: The last Airbender when he tries (and fail) to bend in the spirit world.
Hinata Hyuga Yeah, I'm not sure why they had a hard time grasping this, it's not exactly new information to the show.
Because they only watched it once, they never had the time to digest and obsess over the series since they're just watching everything once in a continuous flow until Korra is done.
11:13 Calvin got it all wrong lol
Where the tree and the portals are is literally the spirit world. And when your body is in the spirit world you can use your bending but when it's just your spirit you can't bend.
this. basically you can bend if your physical body is in the world. meditation just brings your spirit so you cant bend
Yes ! This is it. Thats why avatar Wan said "nobody will be able to enrter PHISICALLY" into the spirit world".
Still don't know why Aang didn't go through the portals in season 1.
Because this shit is a change to the narrative.
Aj Run uh because the portal wasn't open and he didn't even know they existed
I think Vaatu said "It was I that broke through the divide that separated the plain of spirits from the material world." For me, that implies that he was the first one to open the spirit portals long ago and leave the Spirit World and that only he and Raava have that power. Not that he created the Spirit World. That is why the Avatar has that power because of their fusion with Raava.
I need some...Ginseng Tea... for the next episode
That is nothing more than hot leaf juice.
That is what all tea is!!!
How can a fellow Avatar fan say something so horrible?
I'll have cactus juice, I hear it's the quenchiest
Banana onion juice for me

Next episode is gonna be awesome! can't wait (:
They're legit gonna cry.
''Hello Korra''
Washinout stop it please
I hope that Eric will wear this shirt ;)
Spoiler: He didn't wear this shirt ):
"oh my gosh! what is the spirit gives Boomi bending!?"
nah that sounds crazy
also Calvin have these spirit portals all wrong! the spirit portal in the south leads to the spirit world to the place with the tree, the other closed one is the one from the northern pole! it doesn't go "physical world" -> "place with tree/Vaatu" -> "spirit world"
but that would bean that Aaron in right so he's going to deny it forever :P
Shit i got feels when shane agreed to knowing what it's like being apart of the I disappoint dad club :(
Solarbear we've all been there at some point
anybody else pick up on the fact his shirt also says 'proud father' bruh the irony
Something I realized, if Korra or everyone else just did absolutely nothing at this point on Unalaq would have failed anyway since later he doesn't get the ransom to force korra to open the portal with, so Unalaq ultimately won on pure luck. Unalaq just sucks.
But Korra doesn't know that. Unalaq said he didn't need her to open the other portal, so the avatar gang believes they have to do something

I KNEW THIS WOULD HAPPEN !
4:42 - Shane: I know that club. LMAO

You're in more danger if you're physically in the spirit world. Do you remember what some spirits did to humans?
Koh is an example
I’m glad you guys are enjoying the season more now xD I can’t wait to see your guy’s reaction to the rest of the season :)
Love your reactions, definitely among the best at dissecting and analyzing all aspects of the show. Keep up the great work guys.
Vaatu didn't create the Spirit World, he created the Spirit Portals.
that was WAN one of the best episodes
Last episode with Studio Pierrot!
gotta get my tea ready for the next episode..

Sokka and the village didn't enter the Spirit World. They were kidnapped. By Hei Bai.
I know I’m five years late, but Iroh was also more in tune with the spirits.
The next 4 Episodes are like one big Final :D Great Stuff is coming.
HOLY FUCK HOW DOES CALVIN GUESS THIS SHIT
DeQuan maybe he just reads ahead, I hope not though. Maybe he’s just a lucky guesser
Jacob, I agree with your comment, but a slight correction:
Raava isn't a "Good" spirit and Vaatu isn't a "Evil" spirit. Light and Dark, more like.
Guys I'm talking about how he just predicted bumi here
+DeQuan. Spoilers below.
Yeah that is really strange. When I first watched the show I never even considered Bumi getting bending because I thought being a non-bender is what separated Bumi from his siblings and yet somehow Calvin brings up three or four times the idea the he will somehow unlock bending. Oh boy, this season is so convoluted. I cannot WAIT for s3
Next episode is my favorite from this whole season!!!! Can't wait
..............Detective Calvin is dead...LONG LIVE FORTUNE TELLER CALVIN!

Who else thinks that Eric's analysis of Unlaque and Tenzin was quite literally Perfection!
This is just about where Jinora started to become my favourite character in the show.
6:40
Wow
I cant wait for them to meet you know who in the spirit world and see their reactions!
i liked the episodes about the first avatar but i never knew how many people thought it was one of the best episodes.
Open the video, pause it immediately and make that Calvin face a meme XD
Felix Gemünd you mean this?
imgur (dot) com/lzBDdOZ
I love your Wan jokes guys. Awesome vid!
I think an Avatar vs Dark Avatar would be cool too ;)
This episode is amazing
Ooohhhh they aren’t ready for the surprises in next episode
It does matter if you bring your body or not. If you bring your body, you can bend.
Unlike humans, spirits can't disassociate into two different forms. Humans can meditate into the spirit world and leave behind their physical body. For spirits, the physical and spiritual are one and the same. A spirit couldn't meditate its way into the mortal world.
The only two people who can see the spirit that the other cannot see from the both series are Iroh and Yinora
If you go through the portal you are able to bend. If not, you cant.

I cant wait to see their reaction during the most wtf moment of korra. Itll make my day
some of the people are just more spiritually connected to the spirit world compared to others it's not because jinora saw the statue light up.
I feel like they are the best type of people to hang out with
What if the spirits gives people's bending
XD
Last 5 episode we're almost halfway.. just getting really excited .. we're getting closer to season 3 :D
I think this is probably the reason why tens and wasn't giving korra the spiritual advice she needed because he didn't have a good spiritual center himself

6:40 This man and his predictions
From here on out this series becomes amazing!!!
"Oh my gosh, what if the spirits gave Bumi bending?" *....welp.*

Yes that was Guru Patik. I miss him 😢
AH AFTER TEN THOUSAND YEARS I'M FREE! IT'S TIME TO CONQUER EARTH!
Did Eric really compared "Legend of Korra" to the Star Wars prequels? But explanations in Korra are good and make sense! How dare you Eric!
The crew are big lovers of the prequels. So in Eric's eyes the explanation makes sense and thats alright.
I can't wait for them to finish this season already and get on with season 3, aka easily the best season of the show.
Awesomeness! Just like you guys!
Damnit Calvin just predicted the finale.
Season 3 is almost here an I cant fucking wait!
DO IT
DO IT NOWWW
the North and South portals are in the North and South water tribes....ya dinguses. and its "BO-lin" not "BRO-lin" XD
well they are going to love the pen-ultimate episode of this season (also, they kinda fully rewieved it already in this episode)
The thing that confuses me is: can spirits phase to the physical world when the portals are closed?
WOOOO GREAT WAY TO START MY DAY
12:37
Vaatu and Rava do not have bodies, they're spirits.
You cant just cut ''aaaw did I do it wrong :( '' part !!!
Anybody had joined the "I disappoint dad" club?
Danendra Abhinaya many times lol
The next character in the spirit world is gonna blow there mind! Expecialy erics
Going through the portal lets you bring your physical body into the spirit world and thus you can bend. Meditating to go in only sends your spirit and you can't bend.
When you're so early that it's only patrons in the comments...
Holy shit Aaron "what if vaatu possesses unalaq and is a spirit that can water bend." He guessed the finale xD
why would you even point that out dumbass?
The Programmer of video games because blind wave doesn't read comments you dipshit
8:07 dragon heart?
There was never one realm. The spiritworld has always been there.
1:59 that just sounded like gibberish
Finally got rid of ugly Studio Pierrot animation! From this point on, the whole series only gets better rapidly. Looking forward to next week, hope you are going to like it 💜
Goddams Calvin back at it again with the detectivism
6:39 Foreshadowing...

If you walk in through the portal you keep your body and still bend if you meditate in your only your spirit so you cannot bend
Moral of the story: Don't cut down trees
Unalaq and the twins were bending in the spirit world...
Brendan Horn Thats because they went throught the portal, so are physicly there. If you project your spirit there you cannot bend
I think it's cause they entered through the southern spirit portal with their physical bodies allowing them to use their bending, where as Jinora and Korra entered with their spirt's only and that's why they can't use bending.
Anybody know which show won the Poll?
It would've made much more sense to hold off the invasion of the south. Your whole plan relies on the Avatar trusting you so you should probably not antagonize her by invading her home before she opens the portal.

How dumb the cops are in avatar, not checking fingerprints of the items they found in Mako's room
Do they even have finger print technology in this world?
@@JamesWiseMagic It was invented in 1892, and Korra dates in 1920
These guys are earning 27k a month..Holy shit!
I'm just nitpicking. I already scrolled down through the comments just to make sure someone didn't already point this out, because it's annoying to have a hundred people tell you the same thing. Blind wave crew is numbuh WAN 😸😸😸😸
What would happen if you entered the spirit world by meditation but left by the portals
