    Yeah, just because Korra got the poison out doesn't mean she's 100% or magically fixed mentally. Getting the poison out was only one step in fully recovering. Korra still has several issues she needs to continue to work out. It's like what Toph said a few episodes ago, she can't fix *all* her issues for her.
    With that said, I love how this fight between Korra and Kuvira was more of a mental fight than a physical one when you really look at it. You have Kuvira constantly taunting and throwing low jabs at Korra, and Korra herself trying to not let it get to her as well as trying to get back into her groove. Kuvira obviously knew that this fight was in her favor. It's no secret that the Avatar was badly hurt and out of action for a couple of years now.

    When Eric said 'She has a mental block, but how would Kuvira know that?'
    I don't think she technically knew about it, she was just taking advantage of Korra's hesitation and then called her weak for it. Then again, it wouldn't surprise me one bit if she was just taking a jab at Korra's weakened physical state post Zaheer fight. She certainly seems like the cold blooded type lol :P

      Allan Mena If you actually listened to the things Kuvira was saying, you could actually take those as low jabs at Korra. It would also explain why Korra started getting a bit rash and sloppy in how she was fighting (aside from being rusty AF of course).

      How wouldn't she know it? Korra is the Avatar. A celebrity basically .... who has vanished for 3 years. Last seen at an airbending master ceremony where she was in a wheelchair. Remember Kuvira was one of Su's soldiers. If she wasn't at the ceremony - which I believe she was - she still would have known about it as a confidant of Su's. The whole thing about her having to step up and "unite" the earth kingdom was about the Avatar not being available. She basically did her job. Korra's been gone and she's been ill. That's all you need to know to figure someone will be a little rusty and off their game.

    honestly this episode is so fucking important, many people hated Korra and tought she was a weak avatar because of it but this book is all about Korra winning agains't her PTSD, her Depression, winning agains't herself. The character progression that Korra goes trought all the volumes is so good, in each book we see so many sides to her, some bad and some good, and it amazes me how well they managed to represent all the mental disorders she experiences after everything that happens to her

      Gay Crow In my personal opinion, I think people see Korra as a weak Avatar because she fails, a lot. In some aspects it's good to have a character fail and grow through their mistakes and failings but in some instances she doesn't learn, and in almost every season she gets manipulated very easily, causing a rift between her and her loved ones. Not only that, but in all 4 seasons she gets her ass royally kicked by the villain, and a lot of people got tired of that. Especially considering that not only did she lose in a lot of fights but she lost favor with the public multiple times all throughout.
      Even if you want to say she's a "good" character, it's almost undeniable that as an Avatar she's a failure(she saved the world several times yes but not convincingly, not without the villain nearly winning and crippling her), and the fact that she lost her connection to her previous lives(being the first and only Avatar to do so permanently) only solidifies this point. I think LoK was trying to deconstruct what the Avatar is and what it's meant to be, hence why we got the Avatar's origin in it, and while that's not necessarily a bad thing, it's not necessarily a good thing either. It's all about execution no matter how complex the underlying theme is. For some the execution worked, for others it fail short convincingly.

    • @danielr3149
      @danielr3149 6 лет назад +9

      I think a lot of people think she's bad because she's impulsive which causes her to make bad decisions, and she is and she does -- and that's her flaw to overcome. But I think these same people forget that Aang was always dodging his responsibilities as the Avatar. I mean, the only reason that show exists is because he wanted to run from being the Avatar.

    Kuvira (who I don't think ever actually said the word "equality" until this episode) isn't really advocating for class equality so much as national equality. She wants the seize the resources and technology of rich places, like Zaofu and Ba Sing Se, and put them under central, government control, allowing them to be used to the benefit of the Empire. The whole problem with the old Earth Kingdom was that it was incredibly regional and decentralized. Places like Omashu were more or less independent mini-states, with very little direct contact with Ba Sing Se and the Earth King. That meant that even as the rich, successful states prospered, a lot of the less developed one suffered and starved, which is what caused it to fracture so much following the Earth Queen's death - there was no spirit of unity, and no framework for cooperation among the states. Kuvira believes (quite understandably) that the Earth Kingdom's broken system needs to be torn down, state by state, and reassembled into a single, centralized nation that actually fully utilizes its resources and manpower, even if it means forcing the states to join up by force.

      Kuvira wanted unity, and favored a variety of diplomacy and military to achive her goal, unifyin the earth kingdom under her would automatically give her more power.
      And Unalaq... i don't need to say anything. He was a powerhungry fool who wished to gain power through helpng the spirits and humans live together again... altough he might have gone just a "bit" to far.

      Yea, every villain represents some form of government. Amon is Communism, Unalok is Theocracy, Zaheer is Anarchy, and Kuvira is Fascism.
      It's weird to say that being inconstant with with what you say makes a character inherently weak or reflects their inner beliefs. Kuvira is a liar, we've known that for a while. She said it herself she put's on a front when talking to certain people to get what she wants. She never mentions equality before or after that single sentience. The reason for that is because it's not true, that's not what she wants. Being a liar doesn't make a character weak, it's just a part of the narrative.

    I think the biggest thing that people don't understand about this season is that the main enemy is not Kuvira, it's Korra herself. Specifically, her mind that is. This season shows how having a mental issue can be much more debilitating and harder to heal than many physical injuries.

      The main enemy was Kuvira because of the fact that Kuvira is quite literally the embodiment of what Korra could have potentially became, had she been in her position. The creators of the show stated as much. Kuvira is the foil to Korra, a dark version of her, her arch-nemesis.

    when you think about it this type of metalbending is similar to bloodbending. the way how kuvira bends those metalplates around her enemies' wrists and ankles and then bending them in every direction she wants shows how another's body can be controlled like a puppet master. scary and awesome at the same time

      Indeed. I'd say that Kuvira's particular style of metal-bending seems nearly indomitable to anyone who's not a metal-bender themselves. No Avatar before Korra (who is the first metal-bending Avatar) would really have a way to counteract the metal strips that Kuvira can clamp over your eyes and bind your body with, almost like blood-bending in a sense, except its effects can't be outright cancelled by the activation of the Avatar state. Such a technique could be potent enough to bring down even the likes of Aang, who could not metal-bend, although it wouldn't be nearly as effective against Korra.
      But the technique does fit for Kuvira being the puppetmaster that she is in this season.

    • @TheGreater-ScopeVillain
      @TheGreater-ScopeVillain 3 года назад +3

      @@piccolojunior9820 Bloodbending is more intrusive, yes. But Kuvira's metal body-binding technique is much easier for her to perform than for any bloodbender to do what they do, and her technique is much harder to get out of if you're not a metalbender yourself.

Kuvira was there at the fight, so she likely saw Korra's condition after. Like she said, "I know you're a bit rusty" and...that's pretty much it. Every Korra villain represents a late 19th/early 20th-century conflict from the real world, in roughly the order they happened: Amon is populism, Unaloq is religious fundamentalism, the Red Lotus are anarchism, and Kuvira is fascism. Her hypocrisy--"We're all equal, now BOW"--is part of that. One of the defining features of fascism is that it's ideologically incoherent. "We're the best, strongest, most advanced people in the world! And also five seconds from destruction if a single outsider gets in." "We'll build a stable empire that'll last a thousand years! By pissing off every other significant military power in existence." "We're a democratic, egalitarian republic, and if you vote for anyone other than the Great Leader you'll be executed." Etc.

    • @GermansLikeBeer
      @GermansLikeBeer 6 лет назад +17

      Good comment for the most part, but I just wanted to clarify that those real world conflicts did not actually happen in that order. Populism and fascism more or less coincided in the early 20th century, religious fundamentalism as it exists nowadays emerged in the early 20th century, but has its roots in the mid-18th century (to the founding of Wahhabism) and anarchism has technically existed since the dawn of civilization, and isn't even a unified ideology in the traditional sense.
      Also, I think religious fundamentalism is the weakest, least clearly presented of the themes in the show, owing largely to Unalaq's lack of characterization and the weaker writing quality in general. Otherwise, bang-up job.

    • @VolrinSeth
      @VolrinSeth 6 лет назад +10

      Religious fundamentalism goes way further back than that, see the Crusades, Inquisition, the persecution of non-Catholic sects in the Roman Empire, etc.

      Within the U.S. context, they did? Populism as a political force goes back to Andrew Jackson in the early 19th century, Christian fundamentalism--meaning a combination of religious extremism and anti-intellectual literalist interpretations of texts--starts with the publication of The Fundamentals in 1910-15, anarchism *of the form depicted in the show*... well, it never really existed but began to be used as a strawman descriptor of leftists around WWI, and while nativist authoritarian movements are perennial, fascism as we know it rose in the aftermath of WWI.

    Korra at this point is morally fucked up, or definitely a form of PTSD. I mean, Kuvira is like an insect to a ''full-out'' Avatar, take Aang and Firelord fight from the Last Airbender, or even how masterful Avatar Roku was, who didn't even need the Avatar state to beat anyone, yet Korra couldn't do a thing.
    I call it a great story/character development, Korra is truly going through a lot and is growing deeply.

    • @TheGreater-ScopeVillain

      Now if Korra _wasn't_ also a metal-bender, perhaps even at full power she could have been defeated by a Kuvira if Kuvira was fighting seriously. Ultimately, in the actual fight where Korra could metal-bend, Kuvira still knew that Korra was incapable of fighting at her full capacity at that point, and her knowledge of her own prowess as a bender gave her the confidence to not just take Korra on single-handedly, but also to toy with her - Kuvira was not even fighting seriously for the first part of the match. Even though Kuvira was forced to stop playing games when the Avatar state began to push her back, she knew what she was doing throughout pretty much the entire fight.

    Now we see how deep Korra's problem is: Even though she got the poison out, her mind and body are still affected (jumping right back into action with no real recovery time after your body goes through something like that is NEVER a good idea). Gotta give her props for not wanting to fight initially though: She only did it because (like Kuvira), everyone was calling her out on NOT fighting, either calling her wrong or weak when she refuses: "I can't believe you're refusing to fight!"; "I knew you were weak." Korra is FINALLY learning that fighting should be a LAST resort, never a first.
    So when we get to the showdown between her and Kuvira, she feels like she HAS to fight, to prove something to others and herself, even with her mental stuff going on, because there IS some mental stuff going on with her. That's why she sees her avatar form in Kuvira: Just because the poison is gone from the body, the poison in the mind is harder to conquer. She can't just brush it off like that. That's NOT how PTSD works, I'm pretty sure. I don't think Kuvira knows that Korra's issues are that deep, though. She's just doing what she's always done: Preying on her opponent's weakness, and "uniting" everyone under HER leadership.
    As for Varrick and Bolin, I LOVE their interactions, so funny! And Spirit Vine Death Ray? Oh boy... Can't wait for the next episode!

    • @BhBc8f8
      @BhBc8f8 6 лет назад +1

      I don't think fighting should be a last resort though, i believe there are situations in life where you have to shut it down right then and there before it gets any worse. So there has to be some sort of balance, it would take great wisdom to be able to navigate through all that.
      Interesting theory on the motives of the next showdown, there's also a theory that she wasn't even thinking about that at all, she was just mad cause a mosquito got squashed :D

    • @Timberwolf410
      @Timberwolf410 6 лет назад +1

      Oh I definitely agree, but like you said, there has to be a balance. And like I said, Korra gets points for trying: she DID try to balance it out. Normally, she would have jumped right in and took Kuvira out but she didn't: She tried to talk but was ultimately pushed to do something she didn't WANT to do, but HAD to do...despite being totally NOT ready for it. So yeah, if you CAN find another way to resolve conflict other than, in the words of Aang himself, "taking out people you don't like," you totally should. Especially Korra, since she's the Avatar for ALL the nations, benders and non-benders included. All part of her character arc, which I love. Besides, something tells me that if Korra had tried to talk during the showdown, Kuvira would have goaded her into fighting anyway. The end result would have been the same.

    Kuviras fight style may look simple but its hard af. She takes the "boxing state" to stable herself more. While Korra attacked, Kuvira searched for small spaces where she can attack back only alot better and more painful looking. So taking all in one point: She dodges alot until her enemy gets a bit "tired", she searches for those small spaces and attacks back harder. Finding the small spaces in a attack is very hard, thinking of how you gotta dodge in the same time. Altough Kuvira is the enemy, she originally just wanted peace while Korra was gone and being unstable with herself. But Kuvira's fight style sure impressed me alot, its actually a bit like mine only alot more harder of course. But i actually do the same, i dodge and if i see a tactic to fight back where it hurts, i do it in a rough way just like she does it.

    @snapgab 6 лет назад +34

    It's not a truce just because Kuvira says so, you don't get to march up to a peaceful city with your army, then declare that there's a truce, and then call foul play because the people from this city decide to make the first move.
    Truces are mutual, this wasn't mutual. There was no agreement, just a statement from Kuvira.
    Suyin deciding that offense was the best defense, is totally fair play IMO.

    • @BhBc8f8
      @BhBc8f8 6 лет назад +6

      ......Well It technically is by definition. It doesn't matter if they have a million troops at your borders as long as no one attacks then you are at "peace" Suyin kinda declared war. It's iffiy

    • @brandonjuno
      @brandonjuno 6 лет назад +3

      Bhlack Bishop No, this is false. Putting armed troops on someone else's land without their consent is basically an act of war. Kuvira just played it so that Su would be seen as making the first blow.

    • @BhBc8f8
      @BhBc8f8 6 лет назад +7

      I said borders as in outside the country. Kuviva's troops aren't in Zaofu, they're on the outskirts of the city so they're technically not on their soil and by technically i mean since the Earth Empire is still in the early days of government and Kuvira is the sole head of the Empire then she pretty much owns everything.

    • @brandonjuno
      @brandonjuno 6 лет назад +2

      Bhlack Bishop Kuvira declared that she owned everything -- that doesn't make it so. It also doesn't matter that she's not technically on Zaofu soil. If you move your hostile military within striking distance of another country without permission, that country can legally attack you under international law.

    • @BhBc8f8
      @BhBc8f8 6 лет назад +2

      I hope you've seen GoT otherwise this probably wouldn't make much sense. It's like the Greyjoy rebellion, they raised their banners against Robert and he responded with the full branch of the military. Moral or not, legal or not Kuvira seized power from Wu and became the sole leader of the Empire, in which Zaofu is in open rebellion of as Suyin refuses to bend the Knee. So yes, you can legally attack an army at your borders but you would be wise not to especially in the middle of a "truce" and if we're going into international law then Suyin didn't officially sign a declaration of war but her actions do constitute as a casus belli. I'm actually not a fan of Kuvira cause she beat up my girl but i have to give her credit she handled that pretty well.

    Kuvira is a people person, she knows how to manipulate them and how to get what she wants from them. As a soldier, combatant and things from her childhood withstanding, she knows suffering and how it affects a person. It's natural she may deduce from Korra' absence, their interactions and gung ho attitude over the years that her return would yield negative results in one on one combat.

    Kuvira is more powerful in metal bending, meaning if Korra was to try and bend it, Kuvira would just be able to take control again. Just like how Hama blood bent Katara but Katara was able to take control again as she was the more powerful waterbender.

    • @TheGreater-ScopeVillain
      @TheGreater-ScopeVillain 3 года назад

    I felt the same frustration while watching the battle but that’s because of the great writing of the producers. They made us think that she was back to being strong, mentally and physically just because she got all of the poison out. But it’s so much deeper than that because it’s not just the poison. She’s straight up suffering from PTSD as she got the air bended out of her body and nearly died. So, no, getting the poison out isn’t going to help her get better. It was a mental challenge for her which also developed her character. She’s always tried to live up to aang‘s standards: in season 1 she snapped because a reporter asked what aang would’ve done in her place, in season 2 everyone was mad at her for not being as spiritually connected. That’s why she wanted Unalaqs help, she wanted to live up to everyone’s expectations. In season 3 and 4 she learned how to be more patient and maybe TALK before fighting. For example when she tried to find a compromise with kuvira. Korra WANTED to be more wise but yet again the only solution was to fight.
    Zaheer scarred her deeply, paralyzed her for a long time, gave her PTSD which is why this is more than being just PHYSICALLY fit. Korra is strong as hell and achieved many great things too. And yeah, she won most of her fights with the help of others, but a) the villains she had to face were 10x stronger and b) aang needed help too and there’s NOTHING wrong with getting help. That’s literally what Team Avatar is there for. So stop cherry-picking who to praise and who to bash. Y’all praise aang for everything but won’t hold him accountable for running away from his responsibilities, yet hate on korra who’s being mentally challenged.
    Also they are TWO DIFFERENT people and avatars. Kyoshi wouldn’t have handled Ozai the way Aang did, yet no one is hating on her for being too “aggressive“. Korra probably would have killed Ozai too. Aang didn’t tho because it’s not the way he was raised and because it’s just not who he is. Korra and Aang are complete opposites WHICH IS TOTALLY FINE AND GREAT. Why would you want to have a cookie cutter avatar who acts the same way every other avatar did, that would be boring as hell.
    It’s sad to see that so many people ignore it or don’t even acknowledge it. People will call her weak, compare her to aang and call it a day.
    Grow tf up.

    Okay, this is just me asking an unrelated question but was lava bending a thing during the last air bender? I mean remember when Aang went to see Roku in the temple and the priests attacked them? And when Aang went into the avatar state and "became" Roku. And then when Roku destroyed the temple, he made the lava shoot up from below the temple... Because I don't remember it being a thing back then.

    I for one wouldn't want to jump back underground when I'm surrounded by hostile earthbenders who could and probably would cave the tunnels in on me. Fuuuuuuuuuuuck that haha. One thing about Kuvira, at least from how I see it is that she didn't know what Korra was going through but she was aware of what happened to her at the end of season one. As far as her confidence goes I think she's just very confident in her skills, she's obviously an incredibly skilled metal bender maybe second only to Toph herself and on par with Toph's daughters. One thing I think people misunderstand about the avatar is just how powerful they are, they certainly are the most powerful benders of their time but that power comes from the avatar state and when not in the avatar state their ability to use multiple elements giving them more to work with. As far as their strength goes when not in the avatar state they don't generally seem stronger than other benders of those elements. Another point is that even if Korra is technically more powerful, that doesn't mean that she's the better fighter. Kuvira was doing an amazing job of just utilizing Korra's momentum against her constantly misdirecting her and throwing her off whereas Korra was using more "powerful" attacks. Just my thoughts anyways. Great episode and reaction guys!

    • @TheGreater-ScopeVillain
      @TheGreater-ScopeVillain 3 года назад

The glow is the combination of all your past lives focusing their energy through your body." Korra completely lost all her connection to the past avatars." (Roku) So when Korra severed her connection to all her past lives I literally see no point as to why she would go into the avatar state at all. Not to mention why and how does she get more powerful in the avatar state?
