Did you know that Wan means 10,000? It mirrors the timeline of this story (it happened 10,000 years ago) and a few other things, such as the spirit library and its owner Wan-Shi-Tong (he who knows 10,000 things). I just love the symmetry in this show, like Aang said in the second season "Everything is connected."
doing the dragon dance;)))))))0 HE INVENTED THE DRAGON DANCE! he lived in the era where humans and civilisations just started to sprout around the world lol.
Samori D Yeah this is just the known 10,000 years. The creators said it wasn’t always like that. So that could mean humans once did control it all and it ended up that way with the spirits taking over and so on and so forth. It probably was a cycle where history was always lost. Oh to add, i don’t think this was confirmed by the creators but I definitely heard that the lion turtles protected humans who retreated to their backs when spirits took over. So there was civilization before this era. Ugh so much history!!!
To clarify the lion turtle vs animal bending thing. I think the lion turtles give the humans the ability to bend, but the animals are the ones that teach them the technique to harness that bending ability. That's why Wan was such a good fire bender, because the Dragon taught him the dragon dance and in sod doing how to harness his fire. So same thing with the badger moles, the sky bison and the moon for water bending.
I. Th. I used to think that until I realized they never refer to the ability to manipulate the elements as anything other than bending. No one ever calls it "Controlling the elements", so "bending" is the only way to refer to it meaning the lion turtles did give them the ability to "bend the elements" but the animals + the moon taught them how to harness that ability and actually "bend" as we know it today.
Shonksu didnt read your whole comment but i saw “wan was able to use fire ending like a pro before his banishment” or whatever but literally all he did was like punch around and fire came out. After learning, he actually used it as an extension of himself
it’s funny there were guesses about the cup having a meerkat or a prairie dog, because in episode 9 I think? korra encounters meerkat prairie dog spirits I believe. the creators thought it was so funny how redundant they were
They didn't change lore, original show never implied that dragons gave firebenders their bending, only that the dragons are the original firebenders and that people learned by observing them, same goes for the other benders.
Rune to be fair that was a legend(doesn’t have to be true), also they totally could’ve been the first earth benders in recorded history. I do admit that it’s an issue but it can be explained.
@@rune9284 they were the first earthbenders indeed just like wan was the first firebender, the lion turtles gave people the power but people didnt use the art of bending, its the same if you give a child a sword but you dont learn him how to use it, i dont think bending means having the power of a element you get what i am saying?
@@rune9284 honestly even if it was a lore change then it's s good one cause by logic anyone can be a bender and anyone can bend 4 elements just by learning from the animals(and moon)

YESSSSSS!! Finally!! I've always said although this is the weakest book of the 4, it has some of the strongest moments (this two parter for example) in the entire Avatarverse. Also, after this two parter the season REALLY picks up. I knew you guys would LOVE this episode. Can't wait for part two!!
serenityq26 honestly, i used to have the same opinion on book 4 but after going back and rewatching it man is it good. I think it's labed as boring cause it has the least action of all the books but interms of character growth, and really developing them as fully fleshed out human beings and their relationships, book 4 is the best.
To put it simply, *elements* were given, *bending* was taught. You see this with the montage of Wan. The other firebenders in the village were surprised on how Wan used his bending "As an extension of himself" as well as the scenes where Wan was training with the dragons, just like Aang and Zuko.
In LAB, remember the lion turtle told aang that in the era before the avatar, they bent not the elements, but the energy within themselves. So lion turtles gave them the power. Later, people forgot how to bend and discovered it again from the sky bison, the moon, badger miles and dragons.
Rewatching this a year later... Man when they were reacting to Avatar it was a good time to be a Normie (especially when they were watching ATLA and Blind Wave were watching ATLK. Not to say that I don't love what The Normies are reacting to now, but man these were the good ole' days...
The Lion Turtles were the ones who granted man the elements, the animals like the dragons, sky bison, badger moles, and the moon were the ones who taught man how to properly use the elements as an extension of their bodies. It's like if you're given a sword, it doesn't mean you know how to properly use it. You can swing it in random directions and attack aimlessly or you can learn technique for successful combat abilities.
As I type this not sure if they mention. 14:30 for those that don’t know the voice for he humanoid lemur spirit is the same voice actor for haku in spirited away. 17:00 also the voice for the dark spirit is the same voice actor for tyreal in blizzards video game Diablo franchise.
The Lion Turtles have the power of elements and are able to give/take them. The Moon, Dragons, Sky Bisons and Bagder Moles are the masters on the elements, born with the power to control the elements already, and the humans learn how to use better the elements from them.
WHY DOES EVERYONE GET THIS WRONG ?? The animals didnt GIVE them the power, they TAUGHT them how to use it properly. The lion turtle give the bending, thats what AANG got, he could ENERGY BEND. They learned from the tides how to push and pull water, same with bisons, moles and dragons. Humans observed them and learned to use their bending abilities.
Lion turtles gave all the elements, spirits kind of made the avatar and dragons, badger moles etcetera were the ones who taught bending. The first bender learned to bend from animals but the power to do so was given by the lion turtles. You still need to learn how to do it even if you are capable to bend (because some people can’t). Like how Toph was blind and technically had to power to bend but didn’t know how, the badger moles taught her how to do it and even use fibration on the ground to bend even better and even see.
Since avatar wan was a fire bender then he went to a air lion turtle then a water lion turtle then a earth lion turtle that’s what determined the avatar cycle
I knew you guys would be pleasantly surprised by this episode. I'm glad I found this channel and I'm excited to binge all of the series again along with you.
The Turtles didn't "teach" the humans how to bend, they gave them the ability to do it. Then the various animals taught them how to use it and incorporate it sort of into themselves, make it their own. It's a retcon in the fact that it's clearly not what they were implying happened in ATLA, but it still fits into all the facts we had. The ATLA Lion Turtle spoke about how they used to bend "the energy within ourselves", and that's how Aang took away people's bending. So these Lion Turtles just do it in reverse.
The lion turtles are the ones that gave them the elemental power and the animals taught them how to bend it as an extension of their bodies I love how they kinda gave us a real insight on how it was before bending and how they got it in all that and how the first avatar came to be
Last Airbender is amazing, amazing plot. But as a teenager legend of korra is so relatable. Struggling spiritually, struggling with your craft, dealing with your dark past, learning new skill, 💘💘💖💖
29:27 I never thought of the normies being a democracy I always thought of it as a monarchy with surge as the king and Mickey as Heir Apparent to the throne and like Nahid as the Village Idiot
toph in the original series (atla) says the badger moles are "the first earth bending masters" the same with dragons, air bison, and the moon(?) with the other elements the lion turtles possess the power and give it out but to master one of the elements one would have to study the masters (aka the 4 animals listed before) there is a difference between having an ability and being a master at an ability
Ik you probably know this but think of it like when the lion turtles gave the people their fire bending, the people used it without any technique but wan gained a technique from it through the dragon dance making them the first fire benders cus the people just had fire, no bending technique. It would be the same for earth with the badger moles.
I can't believe I JUST put this together in my head: Humans were granted the elements by the Lion-turtles, but they learned to BEND the elements from Dragons, Sky-bisons, Badger-moles, and the Moon. I've watched Korra like 5 times, I'm a moron. Anyway, from here on out Season 2 is EXCELLENT right until the season finale. That last episode is so terrible it just screws everything up.
Nope. Remember it has been stated that THE SUN is the source of fire bending...that's why they lose their ability to bend because the sun is blocked. Also when the moon spirit is killed they lose their ability to water bend...that's because the power comes from the moon and why water bending is at it's strongest during a full moon. Korra fucked up the lore.
Weren't the dragons stated to be the "original source" for firebending in The Firebending Masters? I think there's just different ways of saying what is the "source" of bending: Known Power Sources: Moon (for water) and Sun (for fire) Bending Teachers (the original source of elemental bending as a martial art): Moon + Ocean (for waterbending), Badgermoles (for earthbending), Dragons (for firebending), and Sky Bison (for airbending) The Lion Turtles first unlocked the ability in humans with energybending, which then got passed down to their descendants.
The Sun is the source of firebending and the dragons were the original firebenders. This is why during the eclipse they lost the ability to firebend....they were cut off from their source.
Pretty much “fire bending” was learned by dragons “mastered” you can say. Just getting the element in general was by lion turtles. But actually mastering the element was taught by the animals because they were actually benders before any human. The lion turtles granted them the element but the masters were the animals because they use it in life.
Lion turtles gave the elements but the original benders (dragon, bison, badger moles and the moon) had those abilities naturally. The humans learnt how to use the abilities as an extension of themselves from the original benders i.e. the martial art form and then developed it further.
I get goosebumps whenever I see Wan doing the dragon dance. That's how Aang instinctively knew that he and Zuko needed to do it!!!

The answers for the origin of the avatar, the beautiful art style and music. Yes, this episode is one of the best of both series.
Shooting fire = punching. Fire Bending = Martial Art
@Shonksu They didn't get bending, they just got the elements. Wan learned firebending from the dragon and the rest from Raava.
I loved Nahid’s excitement throughout this episode!!
Lord Joey Presumably
Samori D Yeah this is just the known 10,000 years. The creators said it wasn’t always like that. So that could mean humans once did control it all and it ended up that way with the spirits taking over and so on and so forth. It probably was a cycle where history was always lost.
Oh to add, i don’t think this was confirmed by the creators but I definitely heard that the lion turtles protected humans who retreated to their backs when spirits took over. So there was civilization before this era. Ugh so much history!!!
He didn't really invent it, but rather learned it from the dragons.
I. Th. Stfu
@Shonksu ...did you literally just copy-paste what you said to another comment here, STILL not grasping how the elements-vs-bending thing works?
Shonksu didnt read your whole comment but i saw “wan was able to use fire ending like a pro before his banishment” or whatever but literally all he did was like punch around and fire came out. After learning, he actually used it as an extension of himself
Couldn’t hold out any longer, had to pledge for this greatness.
It was HIS power Mr.Krabs. he was number WAN!
Thank you
it’s funny there were guesses about the cup having a meerkat or a prairie dog, because in episode 9 I think? korra encounters meerkat prairie dog spirits I believe. the creators thought it was so funny how redundant they were
They didn't change lore, original show never implied that dragons gave firebenders their bending, only that the dragons are the original firebenders and that people learned by observing them, same goes for the other benders.
The Sun warriors said that the dragons gave them the FIRST fire though
@@layabstar first fire, not firebending, even here Wan was taught by dragon.
“Doesn’t that look like where Aang went to the spirit world?” Good eye! 10:40
These are my favourite episodes of season 2
These 2 episodes are my fav from Korra. They did so well to provide further context and we understand some parts of ATLA even more 🥲🥲
Also, seeing the origin of the Avatar is just a beautiful story. 10/10 - I remember watching these 2 episodes thinking it’s just gonna be a spirit story telling episode but wow, I wish I could erase it from my mind, and rewatch it again for the first time.
YESSSSSS!! Finally!! I've always said although this is the weakest book of the 4, it has some of the strongest moments (this two parter for example) in the entire Avatarverse. Also, after this two parter the season REALLY picks up. I knew you guys would LOVE this episode. Can't wait for part two!!
Paully808 is part 2 also today?
the avatar Korra Swift on patreon they released both eps on the same day, like an hour or two apart, so maybe they'll do the same for everyone else.
serenityq26 honestly, i used to have the same opinion on book 4 but after going back and rewatching it man is it good. I think it's labed as boring cause it has the least action of all the books but interms of character growth, and really developing them as fully fleshed out human beings and their relationships, book 4 is the best.
The turtles gave the power, the animals taught how to use them. No plotholes no worries XD
"God I hate amnesia storylines"
*Like 10 seconds into the reaction*
"This is my favorite episode already"
Haha. God i love these 2 episodes
To put it simply, *elements* were given, *bending* was taught.
You see this with the montage of Wan. The other firebenders in the village were surprised on how Wan used his bending "As an extension of himself" as well as the scenes where Wan was training with the dragons, just like Aang and Zuko.
Lol I'm screaming at the argument at the end - they REALLY wanted to watch the next episode xD
I was waiting since ATLA season 1 reactions for you guys to get here, thank you guys this was magical!
Dabushius same..... So satisfying
I love how enthusiastic they were :D
MY DREAM CAME TRUE. I WAIT SO LONG FOR THIS REACTION ❤️
8:36 -'even with all the power in the world, you are still weak' -firelord ozai
The lion turtles gave the gift of bending. The masters (dragons, sky bison, moon, and badger moles) taught how to use the bending.
24:35 they kind of remember jinora finding wan's statue
32:00 Damn that's what I call a prediction.
As I type this not sure if they mention.
14:30 for those that don’t know the voice for he humanoid lemur spirit is the same voice actor for haku in spirited away.
17:00 also the voice for the dark spirit is the same voice actor for tyreal in blizzards video game Diablo franchise.
I'm just going to say it.... 15:45 to 15:51 is THE best reaction video content ever made.
I love these 2 episodes so much
Glenn Rhee was the original Avatar...
(also lol lol "I hate storylines with memory loss" two seconds later "it's my favorite episode already")
Shonksu c+p
3:06 that isn't fire healing it's just her reading the avatar energies like her aura or something
The voice of Wan is Glenn from Walking Dead
The discussion for when to watch part 2 was so hilarious, I loved it!!! 😂😂
Haha, the end of the discussion was hilarious. Suraj like the dad who gotta lay down the rules, "No cookies for you"
I was on RUclips for 3 hours waiting for this episode
>Fire Heal
_sets body on fire_ "may you rest in peace"
Eve Edena LOL 😂 I think she was more like "fire sensing", feeling the energy inside her.
So many Wan puns
Caduceuz I would ask them to stop, but I do want to hear Wan more
Caduceuz I Wan more puns
Which Wan was your favourite?
I hate you guys
@@HisMajestyTheQween now thats a good Wan
I'm so happy you guys enjoyed this episode! Literally my favourite from both series, I love that you guys are enjoying this season!
Wow, that’s the longest discussion for any avatar episode of Normies period.
lion turtles gave them the element, bending was taught by the respective animal teachers
Gosh Beginnings are my favorite episodes in the entire Avatar universe
Since avatar wan was a fire bender then he went to a air lion turtle then a water lion turtle then a earth lion turtle that’s what determined the avatar cycle
From here on out, the season gets good.
Did anyone else think of Spirited Away with the concept of the spirits crossing the bridge?
the in-unison "what" at like 4:20 had me cracking up. such a perfect reaction! might need a headphone-users warning though lol
Yeah, actually both "whaaat"s were totally in sync :D And they had a headphone users warning right above the video/timer lol
ha whoops! totally missed that!
The lion turtles are the ones that gave them the elemental power and the animals taught them how to bend it as an extension of their bodies I love how they kinda gave us a real insight on how it was before bending and how they got it in all that and how the first avatar came to be
And to think you guys didnt want the amnesia story
Last Airbender is amazing, amazing plot. But as a teenager legend of korra is so relatable. Struggling spiritually, struggling with your craft, dealing with your dark past, learning new skill, 💘💘💖💖
I love this episode , it was so constructed
Wan is played by Steven Yeun. He's Glenn from the walking dead.
My favorite 2 episodes throughout the series.
29:27 I never thought of the normies being a democracy I always thought of it as a monarchy with surge as the king and Mickey as Heir Apparent to the throne and like Nahid as the Village Idiot
toph in the original series (atla) says the badger moles are "the first earth bending masters" the same with dragons, air bison, and the moon(?) with the other elements
the lion turtles possess the power and give it out but to master one of the elements one would have to study the masters (aka the 4 animals listed before)
there is a difference between having an ability and being a master at an ability
Your reaction about Wan was pure gold
Ik you probably know this but think of it like when the lion turtles gave the people their fire bending, the people used it without any technique but wan gained a technique from it through the dragon dance making them the first fire benders cus the people just had fire, no bending technique. It would be the same for earth with the badger moles.
I waited for this episode the whole season. Next reaction is going to blow my mind!
I always interpreted it as the lion turtles gave the base form of bending but it was the animals/moon that refined the style into what we see today.
bending as an ability was gifted by the lion turtles, bending as a martial art was taught by the animals (and the moon)
Rodrigo Borges um you're hot 🔥
I don’t see how people think this is a plot hole. The lion turtles gave them bending but the animals are what taught them and made them master it.
Kayden 21 because people want to find problems where they don’t exist
I. Th. So you just said exactly what I said?
I. Th. Yeah dude that's what he said. Lol At lwast we all agree.
Some people just get confuzzled by it
You guys are the BEST reaction crew
Been waiting SO LONG for you guys to watch these episodes (part one and two)!!
That last episode is so terrible it just screws everything up.
blackcat19 yeah its like the power of the elements is just being able to punch but bending is actual martial arts
Consider this as well: Wan wasn't just the first Avatar, he was the first FIREBENDER.
I think there's just different ways of saying what is the "source" of bending:
Known Power Sources: Moon (for water) and Sun (for fire)
Bending Teachers (the original source of elemental bending as a martial art): Moon + Ocean (for waterbending), Badgermoles (for earthbending), Dragons (for firebending), and Sky Bison (for airbending)
The Lion Turtles first unlocked the ability in humans with energybending, which then got passed down to their descendants.
These 2 episodes will always be the best episodes of Korra for me, so much lore, and it really keeps your attention
