In hindsight, yes, but at the time ATLA first aired, this whole lore didn't even exist. It's more likely that they created it around such things so that it would fit and have a deeper meaning. I think originally it was just a reference to the fact that his past lives had to go through mastering the elements too and so Aang could do it as well. Also, since we've only actually seen a couple of Avatars, it's definitely possible that another Avatar had already been in a similar situation and managed to succeed (apart from Wan).
S0urc3C0de It’s confirmed by the creators that they had the idea for Wan’s origin floating around at least as early as Book 2 of A:TLA. They just didn’t know how to put it into the story, so they brought it back up in LoK. You start to see them hinting towards it in “The Library” when Aang shows Sokka a book with a picture of a Lion Turtle in it.
I reckon you know Wan was Glenn from W.D. He currently voices the school bully in Guillermo del Toro’s Netflix original Trollhunters and upcoming spinoff
Also fun fact, that tea pot Wan keeps Rava in is one of the objects used to figure out whether or not a person is the Avatar by making that person pick it out of a pile of other's because Wan owned it 10,000 years prior. Isn't that crazy?
I basically cried watching this with some of my good friends. I still get chills to this day. In my opinion, this two parter ranks up there among the best in the entire Avatar universe. It was a beautiful, epic, timeless and profound story, told perfectly.
Couple Fun Facts: 1. Each Avatar has their own version of the "Avatar Music", its all the same, just different versions 2.The battlefield that Avatar Wan died in was the same field that Zuko went through in the episode called Zuko Alone in The Last Airbender 3. The rest were going to be mentioned, but the normies figured them out legit right after the video ended, smart ppl
Do you guys notice the small wake of water on the right side and the minor waves more behind as if giving it more of a hint it’s a lion turtle, since it could’ve been swimming slowly or moving in the water. Although I could be seeing things and it could be a long shot but the island does look in the shape of a lion turtles back. I mean it’s pretty rounded like the one in ATLA. And I saw one person that commented on how the camera stopped right on that island as if hinting that it was a lion turtle.
This episode always makes me cry, and the music when he becomes Avtar too, it's just...so epic and emotional and Wan is hands down my favourite Avatar like I do love Aang and Roku and Korra but Wan takes first place. Like Raava said he was so selfless and protective and, and in the end, wise and determined to make up for his mistakes from day one, and so willing to sacrifice everything and even die for Raava and the world.
This episode always makes me wonder if Aang eventually connected with Raava directly. Something tells me all fully-realized avatars do, at some point in their life. Talk about a friendship that lasts lifetimes! Can you imagine how much Raava must love her avatar that she keeps finding them over and over for tens of thousands of years? Gets to watch them grow and learn, reconnect with the universe and with her, and then has to say goodbye all over again... Ok now I made myself cry gdi

Nothing wrong with Chris. It's just that in the first few Last Airbender episodes he gave away vital information that the other four should have discovered by themselves. It's just a nerdy thing nerds do in the presence of other nerds, it's understandable. Except for Static 1x1. That was unforgivable.
10,000 years between each harmonic convergency... is 1 lifetime for Vaatu and Raava. and they existed for 10,000 lifetimes before humans existed, which means they lived for at least 100 million years!! And Raava still called the Lion Turtle "ancient one". how goddamn old are the Lion Turtles???
Kanza actually, if you look at a ton of the comments on this video, here and on Patreon, there are people complaining that these two episodes "ruined the lore" and are "terrible retcons". So my comment was specifically a reaction to that. I think Season 2 was definitely flawed, and is my least favorite season of Korra. But the amount of hate that Korra (the show and the character) gets is not earned. The show and characters both have flaws, but they're still great, and I think the comparisons to ATLA are based more on nostalgia than on objective criticism. Avatar is one of my favorite shows ever, but Season 1 has a lot of filler, and the pacing is uneven in all 3 seasons, Aang makes a lot of terrible and selfish decisions, not just in Season 1 (like in Bato) but even in season 3 (kissing Katara when she had just essentially told him not to). Both Aang and Korra have flaws. It's what makes them relatable and realistic
*Raava and Vaatu can never truly destroy each other. Remember this fact for future usage.* The more I re-watch Beginnings 1 and 2, the more awesome it gets! So much lore is established! Hell, you even see the origins of the Fire Nation, with Wan's old friends showing less respect to the spirits and seeing that the best solution to any problem is to burn it. (*EDIT* Yes, that was a reference to JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Abridged). Speaking of the Fire Nation, I think it's neat how they revealed that the Fire Nation had been secretly preserving the species that were native to the Air Nomad temples. Also, Rana really called the future of Book 2's plot, with the revelation that the spirit portals had been closed by Wan, and Unalaq being hellbent on reopening them.
My FAVORITE under-the-radar element of this episode/series is the bow that the lemur spirit fella does to Wan before he goes back into the spirit portal... the hand gesture is the one that the FIRE NATION USES throughout time. It’s the one Zuko and Aang do to each other when they finally make peace and begin training together. The customs of the fire nation literally have ancient origins in the spirit world I DIE. The attention to detail is out of control.
Fun fact at 10:20 when Wan picks up Raava, he places her in a tea cup. The tea cup resembles the avatars trait. Such as when the Masters made Aang choose which objects like the tea cup and there was a few others to help determine they are the next avatar.
Well, that explains the Avatar Cycle in terms of Elemental Order. It cycles in the same order that Wan acquired the Elements - after Fire, he acquired Air, so after Roku, we had Aang. And after Air, he acquired Water, so after Aang, we got Korra.
It's crazy like I've seen this episodes a lot still got me chills. Also, yours reactions and theory are fine so cool to watch it's like being back in the days the season had been released. Keep going :)
Fun Fact: I don’t know if you noticed but arrow on the air nomads during Wan’s era, is actually completely different to what it is now. It was actually a symbol that represented Raava’s arrows but since the air nation discovered sky bisons and their ancestral connection to the air bending, they’ve respected them by changing their arrows to the ones on the bison. Another fact: The Avatar is half spirit! People tend to oversee this, but it can be hard to figure it out. And yes, not only any spirit, but the spirit of Light itself. That’s how the Avatar is powerful and the balance of the world. Binge watched all your reactions, thank you guys for entertaining us all 🙌
"Some Friendships are so strong they can even Transcend lifetimes" -Avatar Roku "We will be together for all of your lifetimes" - Raava This show really comes full circle
The best answer given in spirit season: 11:10 Vaatu: No human can stand against me. Wan: Haven't you heard the legends, I am not a regular human anymore. Wan is one of the biggest reason why I love LOK same as ATLA
I'm not sure if this was on purpose or not but i love how the order of each reincarnated avatar (in terms of element) is the order in which he obtained each element. I really liked these episodes
Fire Lion Turtle has yellow eyes. Firebenders and fire nation non-benders have yellowish eyes. Air Lion Turtle has grey eyes. Airbenders have grey eyes. Water Lion Turtle has blue eyes. Waterbenders and Water tribe non-benders have blue eyes. Earth Lion Turtle has green eyes. Earthbenders and Earth Kingdom non-benders have green eyes. Gotta love those subtle details
I think the lion turtles stopped giving people bending because bending was meant to protect them from the spirits. Since the spirits left, there was no need for more benders.
when he said different types of people have to live together fits with omashu story because there village is at war with another and when they become the first earthbenders from the bagers molds they learned it from animals so when the lion turtles stop giving bending they learned from the animals so hence all of this make sense and all in order
No they did not forget lion turtles, it’s just as they showed the lion turtles gave them bending and the bisons, the moon, the dragons and the badger moles just taught them technique.
The writers always wanted to do a first avatar episode in aang series, but never found a way to do it justice. I’m glad they waited for the right moment in the story to tell that first avatar story.
Five years later, here, but the creators actually did have a plan to tell this story during ATLA Book 3. Likely when Aang met the lion turtle. I bet it was cut for timing and pacing. It likely would've thrown the tension way off.
21:25 the animals teach people to bend when they possess the ability but they do not grant the ability. If they could teach anyone to bend then all non benders could become benders and Appa could have taught Sokka to bend.
Well the Lion Turtles gave them the ability to bend. The Moon, Dragons, Badgermoles, and Sky Bison taught them to use the ability in the styles that are used today.
When Roku told aang that he could master the elements before the comet arrives at summer's end and he said 'I know u can do it, for you've done it before' he was actually talking about wan because he mastered the elements in less than a year
About your question about the Lion Turtles not giving any more powers. The lion turtles stopped, the only benders now are benders that get it from people who were granted the powers before in their lineage. The "Original benders", badger moles, sky bison, dragons, moon, those are the original BENDERS. The elemental powers are one thing, and being able to BEND those abilities is another. The benders over the past 10k years, learned from the animals and the moon to BEND and to have their abilities be extensions of themselves just like Wan did originally.
Hi, five years after the fact. With all the new Avatar stuff releasing (assuming it's good), I would love to see this realized as it's own four season show. they can even bring Steven Yeun back if they want. Have the first book deal with Wan stealing fire and his banishment. Book 2 will start off with him leaving to find the other cities, meeting Raava, releasing Vaatu, and meeting the Airbenders/learning airbending. Book 3, he searches for the waterbenders and learns it himself. Then, Book 4, he learns earthbending, with the final four episodes dealing with Harmonic Convergence and his battle with Vaatu. It could've surpassed ATLA, given proper attention right from the get-go.
Honestly this discussion was probably your best and I enjoyed it thoroughly. I can't wait for you guys to continue the series. Your reactions and discussions will be cool to see
The lion turtles gave the "power of the element" to the humans through their energy-bending, but humans learned how to use it from the original masters (dragons, sky bisons, badger moles and the moon).
Wan's story does NOT break continuity 1) The Lion turtles didn't give people the ability to bend it was the animals? - No it wasn't the lion turtles gave Aang the ability to energy bend and similarly can give others the power to bend other elements. However they cannot bend these elements themselves. ("The era before the Avatar we bend not the elements but the enrgy within ourselves"). Therefore they wern't the original benders but the Badger moles, Dragons, Moon Spirit and Bisons were. They then taught the humans how to bend. (We even see Wan learn from a dragon how to properly bend). Those prior to this who didn't learn from a dragon can't bend properly the just jab fire out. (When they see Wan bend they even say "the way Wan bends fire its like nothing i've ever seen before he bends it as if it were an extension of himself"). Then when the lion turtles leave at the end bending occurs naturally from biology those who already have the element pass it down from generation to generation and are taught by the Badger Moles, Dragons, Moon spirit and Air Bisons. If we took it to mean you get the powers from the Badger moles etc.... it wouldn't work in ATLA no one (other then the sun warriors) had seen a dragon in years and could still bend e.g. Zuko. So that idea is completely flawed. 2) It goes against the story of Oma and Shu? No it doesn't. Think about it in Wan's story the only benders we see are fire and air benders the two oldest elements. When Wan goes to see the Earth Lion turtle we don't see anyone bend. Oma and Shu must of learnt to bend after the lion trutles already left from the Badger moles. Yes Wan may have learnt to bend before but he is the Avatar so wouldn't really be considered. The other factor is the tail is just a legend and not actually true. 3) There was never a spirit in the Avatar? Yes there was Katara even says it in Season 1 episode 3 when Aang goes into the Avatar state Sokka asks whats happening and she responds "it's his Avatar spirit." 4) There has been 1000's of Avatars but Wan became an Avatar only 10,000 years ago that doesn't add up? It was never stated the Korra's Harmonic Convergence was the next one after Wan's but the next one where Vaatu was free. Similarly the number 10,000 in chinese culture represents infinity (ATLA is based heavily from chinese culture) using this time makes the Avatar appear ancient and also works well because in ATLA the lion turtles are meant to be seen as ancient and older than time itself. So if they were around before the Avatar (therefore over infinity) then this works.
Sadek Miah If I recall, don’t avatars have extended lifespans? I thought I read that Aang’s time in the iceberg shortened his overall lifespan to about the length of a normal person, but most avatars usually lived half a century longer than other humans; I may be wrong about that though, as this was based off of heresay in another RUclips comment section
Caleb Reynolds I am not sure if its relative to Avatars or to the people in the Avatar world. But yeh Kyoshi lived to about 200 years old. Most the others had average ages except for Kuruk who died young.
That Raava says ''We will be together for all of your lifetimes'' followed by the cry of that baby is one of my favourite moments in Avatar. Just the thought that this happened a hundred and that that is Kyoshi and Aang and all other avatars who each have their own story to tell in a never ending cycle hits me really hard.
Outside the Avatar State neither Aang nor Korra has bent more than one element at any given time. For example. if they're Airbending and they want to Firebend, they first have to stop Airbending before they can start Firebending.
I guess it's more a practice thing. Since the Avatar masters the elements one by one, they're used to only ever bending one element at a time (the one they're currently working on mastering). When Wan mastered the elements, Raava had to actually pass through him (connect their energies) in order to "switch" to another element. But the Avatar is permanently connected to Raava's energy and therefore can theoretically bend all the elements at the same time. I presume that this is, however, just pretty difficult to do.
The avatar cycle is based on the order Wan got each element. Fire, Air, Water, Earth
so all that talk about opposing elements being difficult to master in ATLA was all just bullshit

Also, since we've only actually seen a couple of Avatars, it's definitely possible that another Avatar had already been in a similar situation and managed to succeed (apart from Wan).
S0urc3C0de how do you know that
S0urc3C0de It’s confirmed by the creators that they had the idea for Wan’s origin floating around at least as early as Book 2 of A:TLA. They just didn’t know how to put it into the story, so they brought it back up in LoK. You start to see them hinting towards it in “The Library” when Aang shows Sokka a book with a picture of a Lion Turtle in it.
Wan never mastered the elements and neither did aang

Also fun fact, that tea pot Wan keeps Rava in is one of the objects used to figure out whether or not a person is the Avatar by making that person pick it out of a pile of other's because Wan owned it 10,000 years prior. Isn't that crazy?
Which could possibly explain as to why the white lotus had a hard time finding the avatar, because you know who has it.
dimoned123 But doesn't each 4 nation have 4 different Avatar relics?
Except it isn't because he left it in the spirit world and Iroh found it like 10000 years later
Patricia Chen Also it wouldn't make as much sense as there are loads of Avatar relics that are used for each city to find the Avatar.
WHAT?! That's insane. I love these little easter eggs you guys pick up and tell us in the comments.
"We will be together for all of your lifetimes."

"We are bonded forever" legit chills when I first watched
I basically cried watching this with some of my good friends. I still get chills to this day. In my opinion, this two parter ranks up there among the best in the entire Avatar universe. It was a beautiful, epic, timeless and profound story, told perfectly.
"I will be the bridge between the two worlds." Chills.

Couple Fun Facts:
1. Each Avatar has their own version of the "Avatar Music", its all the same, just different versions
2.The battlefield that Avatar Wan died in was the same field that Zuko went through in the episode called Zuko Alone in The Last Airbender

And I saw one person that commented on how the camera stopped right on that island as if hinting that it was a lion turtle.
ibiwen damn mate how did came up with tht, kudos for even catching a glimpse if it's tru or not
Made my day
This episode always makes me cry, and the music when he becomes Avtar too, it's just...so epic and emotional and Wan is hands down my favourite Avatar like I do love Aang and Roku and Korra but Wan takes first place.

After learning about the first avatar, when Korra’s eyes glowed it just had whole other meaning
Yeah, suck it, Korra haters! The Normies are on board, even Nahid, mostly!
Everyone agrees these two episodes were great. The rest of the season was t r a s h
Kanza Well, let them decide that. I'm interested to see what they think of S2 overall.
Don't act like I'm the bad guy when the guy I'm replying to said "suck it, Korra haters"
Kanza so you admit to being a Korra Hater.
Chris needs to be in more Korra reactions, the Chris Cam is hilarious
Kris TV "Chris Cam" 😂
Kris TV i agree!
I just noticed that he learns the new elements in the pattern of the Avatar cycle. Fire, Air, Water, than Earth.
*Raava and Vaatu can never truly destroy each other. Remember this fact for future usage.*
The more I re-watch Beginnings 1 and 2, the more awesome it gets!
Aang “how can I learn all the elements in a year?”
Roku “I know you can for you’ve done it before”
(Not the exact quote)
"We are bonded forever" GOOSEBUMPS whenever I've heard that shiiit ❤
Fun fact at 10:20 when Wan picks up Raava, he places her in a tea cup. The tea cup resembles the avatars trait. Such as when the Masters made Aang choose which objects like the tea cup and there was a few others to help determine they are the next avatar.
When wan turns blue it reminds me of aang taking away ozai’s fire bending
Well, that explains the Avatar Cycle in terms of Elemental Order.
It cycles in the same order that Wan acquired the Elements - after Fire, he acquired Air, so after Roku, we had Aang. And after Air, he acquired Water, so after Aang, we got Korra.
Azure Balmung and after korra we'll be getting the earth bending twins
It's crazy like I've seen this episodes a lot still got me chills. Also, yours reactions and theory are fine so cool to watch it's like being back in the days the season had been released. Keep going :)
THAT THEME NEVER FAILS TO BRING ME TO TEARS!!! (So glad y'all are loving this show!!)
Binge watched all your reactions, thank you guys for entertaining us all 🙌
The Normies getting hyped gets me hyped
Fun fact guys: That battle field Wan dies on was in the show before. Watch Zuko Alone again.

Seeing the normies so shooketh at avatar is why I always come back and see these episodes with them lol!

Fire Lion Turtle has yellow eyes. Firebenders and fire nation non-benders have yellowish eyes.
Air Lion Turtle has grey eyes. Airbenders have grey eyes.
Water Lion Turtle has blue eyes. Waterbenders and Water tribe non-benders have blue eyes.
Earth Lion Turtle has green eyes. Earthbenders and Earth Kingdom non-benders have green eyes.
Gotta love those subtle details
Wtf aang had brown eyes
@@nankono He had grey eyes, BOI
I think the lion turtles stopped giving people bending because bending was meant to protect them from the spirits. Since the spirits left, there was no need for more benders.
when he said different types of people have to live together fits with omashu story because there village is at war with another and when they become the first earthbenders from the bagers molds they learned it from animals so when the lion turtles stop giving bending they learned from the animals so hence all of this make sense and all in order
I hope you enjoyed this, because it is the best episode in the whole of this season
16:02 When Rana hits the spot ;)

I just noticed that rava and vatu look like the above view of Koi fish, representung the ying yang symbol. The detail is 🤣🤣
20:37 that laugh
You can see the disappointment in their eyes when the flashback ended
Wan: "Hello airbenders! I'm a firebender!"
Airbenders: Immediately run away.
Me: They knew....
I'VE BEEN STARING AT RUclips FOR HOURS WAITING FOR THIS
Hi, five years after the fact.
Fun fact: Fire lion turtle was the one who gave Aang energybending
Honestly this discussion was probably your best and I enjoyed it thoroughly. I can't wait for you guys to continue the series. Your reactions and discussions will be cool to see
Oh man, I can't wait until the season 3 premiere. Especially the last scene of the episode.
The lion turtles gave the "power of the element" to the humans through their energy-bending, but humans learned how to use it from the original masters (dragons, sky bisons, badger moles and the moon).
Wan's story does NOT break continuity
1) The Lion turtles didn't give people the ability to bend it was the animals?
Yes there was Katara even says it in Season 1 episode 3 when Aang goes into the Avatar state Sokka asks whats happening and she responds "it's his Avatar spirit."
4) There has been 1000's of Avatars but Wan became an Avatar only 10,000 years ago that doesn't add up?
It was never stated the Korra's Harmonic Convergence was the next one after Wan's but the next one where Vaatu was free. Similarly the number 10,000 in chinese culture represents infinity (ATLA is based heavily from chinese culture) using this time makes the Avatar appear ancient and also works well because in ATLA the lion turtles are meant to be seen as ancient and older than time itself. So if they were around before the Avatar (therefore over infinity) then this works.
Sadek Miah
If I recall, don’t avatars have extended lifespans?
I thought I read that Aang’s time in the iceberg shortened his overall lifespan to about the length of a normal person, but most avatars usually lived half a century longer than other humans; I may be wrong about that though, as this was based off of heresay in another RUclips comment section
Caleb Reynolds I am not sure if its relative to Avatars or to the people in the Avatar world. But yeh Kyoshi lived to about 200 years old. Most the others had average ages except for Kuruk who died young.
Caleb Reynolds You're correct. I think they can go to 200.
@@sadekmiah3122 yup.....Kyoshi actially saw the "Great Comet" twice in her life time. Not many people can say that
@@sadekmiah3122 i rad somewhere that aang is the 182th avatar
That Raava says ''We will be together for all of your lifetimes'' followed by the cry of that baby is one of my favourite moments in Avatar. Just the thought that this happened a hundred and that that is Kyoshi and Aang and all other avatars who each have their own story to tell in a never ending cycle hits me really hard.
Such a great moment
I'm glad I found this good interaction video of my favourite Tv show during quarantine!!
