      And I just a few days ago realized, that we see a lot more of Azula in that fight than from Zuko. We have close up from her face, hear her pants, see the flames of Zuko in her eyes, showing the fear she must experience in this moment where she got close to death. It is strangely as if she´s the protagonist for the moment as we experience her defeat against a calm and unforgiving Zuko. How the roles have switched since the first fight in season 2.

    The music is so epic for these last episodes because they hired an actual orchestra to play it. You can really tell by the use of drums and, as you guys have mentioned, the cellos laid over the Zuko/Azula fight. It's pretty much a feature film score at this point.

    The Azula-Zuko fight is probably the best out of the entire series. Instead of being a heroic battle of a hero vs a villain, the entire theme is somber and sad. It’s two siblings, torn apart by a shitty father and a war they were forced to play roles in. It would have been so easy to make Zuno be the badass good guy who's defeating one of the biggest villains of the series, but the fight is so much deeper than that, and I love it

    • @jwizdum2103
      @jwizdum2103 5 лет назад +58

      it was more sad from Zuko's perspective, he's looking at his sister who's completely lost it and he's trying to save the world FROM HER, the character development is insane, i can't stress it enough

  • @rickyricardo9710
    @rickyricardo9710 7 лет назад +2436

    The Zuko/Azula fight is the saddest moment in the series to me. Siblings are supposed to love each other and support each other, but Zuko and Azula have always been bred by their despicable father to be at odds with one another. They always had a rough relationship throughout their childhood, with Azula bullying Zuko out of jealousy for their mother's love. But even through that, they never completely hated each other, because they were still siblings, and they both had potential to work with one another. But destiny didn't follow a path where they could end up working together, and instead, all of the animosity between them has come to fruition in this battle where they try to kill each other.

      *SPOILERS for the Comics*
      In _Smoke and Shadow_ , it is heavily implied that Azula will help Zuko for the duration of his reign be the best Fire Lord he can possibly be, by hiding in the shadows and using her fear tactics to hold him to the mark whenever he should fail the people of the Fire Nation. Which not only fits Azula to a tee, but also means the two sibling will kinda, sort-a work together going forward.

      Ahsim Nreiziev I like that too. She knows she isn't meant for the throne. She has good leadership skills, but would eventually fall under the weight. She is his Danzo. She has to make the decisions in the dark that he can't make in the spotlight

When they suggested to Katara break the rules of Agni Kai, a fire nation tradition about honor, I just thought how people many times don't realize that they are saying something horrible, because I'm 100% sure they would insult a villain if they did exactly what they said here(attacking from behind, breaking the rules, etc). That's why people need to understand what is their ideals and never forget them, like Aang did when refusing to break his ideal of not killing anyone, that's one of the reasons why I respect him so much.

    The thing I love about the Zuko vs. Azula's Agni Kai is how much it parallels the first fight we see between them, showing the growth and fall of both characters. I also love how much of a tragedy they frame it instead of an 'epic fight'.
    We already have the epic fight with Ozai and Aang, no need to double down on it.
    The fact that Zuko and Azula were driven towards this fight is tragic, and shows how they were driven to this because of their fathers (Zuko having Iroh) and how they were driven against each other.
    PS: Notice how Azula since Ty Lee and Mai betrayed her has completely stopped using her fingers to project fire for pin point accuracy, now wildly shooting fire with her fists.

    The fight between Zuko and Azula is the best in the whole series. There's just so much context to that story, so much conflict and pieces that have irrevocably led them to that point. It's actually kind of sad. I always liked to think the show showed them as opposites. As Zuko grows in strength, Azula seems to weaken. As Zuko gains new friends, Azula loses her own. As Zuko grows more stable, Azula grows more and more shakey. But it shouldn't be like that, they're siblings, and I think both of them still harbour some love and care for the other, they are not completely without compassion for the other, but circumstances have forced them both here. It's one of the best stories for characters I've ever seen and it's not even really directly talked about, just masterful storytelling.

    This shot while Katara and Zuko were talking is underrated. The shot is called a Dolly Effect. It's a technique used in real world movies where the camera operator will zoom in/out to the subject while moving backward/forward relative to the speed of the zoom, giving it a nice effect where the background is like moving farther but the main subject stays still in the frame. The animators managed to do just that within a cartoon movie itself.

      Yeah theyre dumb whoever is saying that. There's so many details to show he had the upper hand in that fight and they give it to you.
      From her mental breakdown to little details like her not properly breathing, something iroh preached is the key to efficient firebending, or in real life martial arts and athletics in general.
      She's going insane, she wasnt pacing, she made mistakes, was being clumsy, etc. Literally didnt have the upper hand untill she played dirty because zuko was ready to shoot that lightning right the fuck back at her lol. Not to mention a weaker character would have clearly died from absorbing volts of lightning.

    The Last Agni Kai is one of the most amazing piece of animation I've ever seen. So visually beautiful, well-choreographed, and the music was breathtaking! I love how they basically muted everything except for the music and the sounds of the firebending. It made the fight a lot more personal imo and it was! We had two siblings fighting each other to the death and that wasn't something I felt we were supposed to cheer for (Mike and Bryan said the same thing as well). On the other hand, I love how with Ozai vs Aang, it was the complete opposite and you could really see that contrast. Overall, they went all out for this 4-part finale (aka movie that was shit tons better than *that thing* lol) and it really showed!
    Fun fact: Mike and Bryan actually full-out used an orchestra for these last 4 episodes and they were even willing to pay for it out of their own pockets had Nickelodeon denied them (thankfully they agreed to it).

      Brendan Smith I think it could be a combination of both. I really do see a significance of him taking the hit midair, as every time you see someone else try redirecting or even producing lightning, they’ve got there feet solidly planted on some surface. Zuko doesn’t redirect it once he’s hit the ground again. It would also make sense on why Zuko’s wound looks the same even after Katara’s healing, showing that the damage was mostly internal.

    13:35 i read somewhere that if you listen closely, there is a distinct difference in the sounds of Azula's fire and Zuko's fire. Azula's sounds more like an actual flame just like the rest of the other Firebenders in the show, but when Zuko bends fire it sounds like a Dragon's roar, which would make sense since he no longer bends out of anger, and learned from the actual Dragons.

    The attention to detail when they use colors in this show is just so good. The little stuff you barely notice but are still there, like when Iroh is channeling his fireball and how the surrounding clouds become ever so slightly dimmer as it's becoming more powerful before he releases it to show its intensity. Or when Katara is giving her speech on the earth benders prison ship way back in s1ep6, as she realizes they are indeed broken the color changes from warm to a slightly colder tone.

    My favourite thing about this episode is the music. The Aang/Ozai fight is quick tense violin strikes, cutting back and forth to Zuko/Azula which are these slowed, pained, drawn out violin strikes. Really shows that we're seeing two immense battles, but one is a vicious struggle for the fate of the world, and the other is an ultimately sad death battle between a brother and sister. It portrays two different kinds of tension in two very similar scenes. Absolutely beautiful.

    I love your reaction when Toph makes the Ironman-Metal suit.
    I was awestruck as well, when I first saw this scene, and the feeling just repeats itself whenever I watch this part.
    I also really liked how even the experienced Fire Nation Captain fighting Toph acknowledged the incredible inventiveness of her armour when he hesitates for just a small moment, looking like he was about to say „What the...?“.

    Anyone else noticed that when we first saw Azula and seen her do lighting those 2 old twins told her she was "1 hair out of place" and now when she cuts her hair and she sees how much hair os left she realises how much further she is from the perfection she seeked

    I'll never understand people that think it's ok to force a 12 year old to kill someone. He is a CHILD. And he is also a monk. People that don't feel bad seeing literally everyone tell Aang he must kill Ozai don't understand who Aang is or really paid attention to his history at all.

    So I’m rewatching all these and I just noticed something: that punching move zuko did that resulted in the twisting flames was a move from the dragon dance. That’s backed up for me by the fact that Azula seemed surprised by it despite always having been the better/more advanced firebender. That’s something she never would’ve learned. So cool
