    Hey guys, there are new people here every video so here's a brief reminder: PLEASE be careful not to give excessive information. If the show will eventually explain it, then you don’t need to. Even if they ask, give them the basics. Anything further has to be removed. I’m sure everyone wants them to experience this show spoiler free, similarly to when you first watched it too, so please be careful with how much you decide to share. This includes hinting at upcoming events or even telling them which future episodes you dislike. After all, this should be a blind reaction. Please be considerate. Thanks for understanding!

    The man displayed after Kyoshi (telling Korra to find Raava) is Kuruk, the waterbending Avatar before Kyoshi. You met him briefly when Aang was meditating on top of the lion turtle in Book 3 of ATLA. The face-stealing spirit took the face of his lover.

    In this episode you can see there is a difference between having the power of an element and beeing able to bend an element. The Lion Turtle gave only the power. But they mostly just could burst a straight fireball. Beeing able to bend, you can redirect an attack, control the fire and not simply "shoot" it and basicly get to know about the true face of an element (like in ATLA the Dancing Dragon).
    Because most Reactors couldnt figure out the difference between a Lion Turtle giving the power and the first bender, like the Dragon and the Moon Spirit. Wan got the power of fire quiet easy, but learned only after the Dragon how to bend it.
    Its like beeing a rookie in football or beeing a member of a club. Both can kick a ball, but the latter knows how as well

    back then the entire world was inhabited by the spirits, and humans only lived on the backs of lion turtles. Of course they got out in the spirit wild from time to time to get food , each time they did that , the lion turtle they lived on gave them an element to protect themselves against the spirits then they gave back the element once they were back . all the creatures you saw after Wan got banished were spirits . he now has to live among them since he broke the law by stealing the fire .

    Many people who criticize this episode seem to miss the part with the dragon. The "power of the element" came from the lion turtles, who granted it via energy bending, but the knowledge of true bending, using that power as a martial art and as an extension of your own body / senses, came from the original bending sources. (Dragon, Badger Mole, Sky Bison, and Moon).

    yeah so this is where some of the "ret-conning" starts lol. Before in the last aibender the spirits were morally grey and ambiguous meaning they were essentially neither good nor bad but rather separate entities that simply existed and lived. Now, the series is trying to say, there is a good and bad to them it's just never shown before and just because it was never shown doesn't mean they were morally ambiguous, which is fine as long as it remains consistent. It's up to you guys to decide for yourself after watching this season of whether or not you prefer the old approach or this kind of.....ret-conning if you will.
    Also just in case you guys didn't notice the reference 19:34 remember when zuko and aang went to the ancient sun warrior civilization and learned the "dragon dance" from the red and blue dragons Shin and Ra? Now that's a W reference lmao

      Honestly I never understood why people called that a retcon just because it wasn't shown doesn't mean it can't happen I mean the show never said that spirits can't be like that so it's not a retcon it's expanding/ giving more context to the lore. Plus it's not like spirits were that important to the original show so it's not like there was much to compare to anyway just atla fanboys hating on korra for no reason.

I'd prefer the first half of the season. I mean this reveal of info is a really big thing, don't you think they should've done this without the obstacles? 24:00 Exactly mate! Some people think these 2 episodes are the best episodes of S2 and some even think for the whole series but I think these 2 were the worst. They don't do a good job of interpreting yin and yang concept and also contradicts with the Avatar universe and contradicts with itself too. There are loopholes and retcons. Some think that it's grate that they showed the background but we don't need this background for water tribe civil war, which is a better concept to execute after the hundred year war than that stupid other half of the season. Now that this much info is revealed, there aren't any mystery element anymore and I truly think this ruins the future productions, cause I think it's a wrong move to reveal the origins this early. I mean wouldn't it be hard to put mystery in the future productions which Avatar Studios working on with this info revealed? The element of mystery was the thing I liked the most in ATLA, now the biggest mystery of this universe is being commercialised, grate.

    • @devonjoseph5467
      @devonjoseph5467 3 года назад +3

      I completely agree, I liked the Wan episodes but they were very disconnected from what were we essentially building up to. Its bad storytelling, you already have a short season. By the end of this season Korra's ability to airbend, her mastery of her spiritual side ( as well as her connection to the past Avatars ), the Water tribe civil war, the Varrick betrayal, the return of the Asami, Mako, Korra love triangle and the Bolin Mover plot. Annnnnnnd now you want to teach us about the first Avatar to set up something else? Like the Civil War main storyline was that much cohesive and relevant to the change landscape of the Avatar world (albeit with some problems of their own). If we had to have them, it shouldn't have been two episodes smack dab in the middle of the season.
      ATLA did something similar to this with the Roku and Sozin episode. It was one episode, that involved five characters, that tied into the history of why the 100-Year war came to be. Teach Aang a Avatar lesson about how the Fire Nation not has the potential for evil but for good as well. It even gives Zuko some clarity about his own family struggles. All of this plays into Zuko leaving the Fire Nation and Aang sparing Sozin. Plot DEVELOPMENT.

    • @yabada7866

      @@devonjoseph5467 I agree to an extend. Personally, I really didn't like the Wan episodes, you're right that they were disconnected but I also didn't like them because of the weird decisions they made about the whole spirit thing and Raava and Vaatu. Despite being so disconnected, it could be written way better even with the obstacles creators faced.
      Yeah ATLA had some issues too, but it didn't make us feel disconnected, however you're right these lore drops need some more time.
      So many ppl think "oh we should be grateful, we got to see the origins" but cmon, it felt like another show rather than a show inside the Avatar universe here and there throughout the entire series. Ppl got so messed up with tons of bad productions which really really treats you like stupid so I guess it's normal that some ppl couldn't understand the connection issues with the main story, the plot and the inconsistencies with the background.

I could've enjoyed this as like a short or an extra like they did with Ba Sing Se, even a miniseries featuring small moments of other Avatars. My main problem with Wan is that Korra doesn't actually learn anything from his life but instead (like every other thing she's done so far) decides not to leave well enough alone (it's a spoiler but if you've watched LoK then you know what dumbass decisons she makes that ultimately causing more problems.)
      Like the whole Wan back story only serves to set up the Raava and Vatuu are linked together plotline that ultimately serves as DExM for the finale. I like Wan, I like the lore, but I don't want my hand held for things like this. Write better stories!

    I'm not a fan of this whole retcon story. AtlA set up Bending as something humans acquired through their own hard work and dedication. The whole Water Tribe plot in the first season is about how they derived Water Bending from the moon, the founding story of Omashu in the Secret Tunnel episode chronicles the first Earth Bender and we're told Dragons and Flying Bisons are the original Benders of Fire and Air respectively. Instead, here the bending is just handed out like candy by the turtles... For me that cheapens it quite a bit...

    • @kpuda7722
      @kpuda7722 3 года назад +3

      Not really. Some people are simply born with the ability to bend, and others aren't. No matter how had most people tried, they would never be able to bend a pebble, light a candle, or move a drop of water. The lion turtles are why some people have the innate ability in the first place, but the moon and bending animals taught them how to use it better until they evolved from ordinary people who could throw fireballs around or move rocks to masters of bending. Notice that before he lived with the spirits and trained with dragons, Wan had to resort to fleeing and tricks with the hunters from his village and he still lost until he got help. After the time skip with him doing the dragon dance, he was able to bend fire "like nothing they had ever seen" and defeated all three casually.

    • @shellyappiah

      @@kpuda7722 As soon as he got his fire, Wan was as capable as the average fire bender we see in the franchise. Yeah, he is not on par with the masters - but he still kept up with what you'd see from some fire nation soldier. Without training.
      I guess a lot of my issue is that I prefer organic worldbuilding where everything is derived naturally from simple roots. This whole thing bloats the story around the origins of bending - it throws out what information we had and instead opens tons of more questions. The actual origin is just shifted from humans to lion turtles, who are now inexplicably capable of bestowing four specific elements - but every single one can only grant one specific one for some reason? And would that mean that if Aang or any other Avatar explored Spirit Bending, they could bestow bending on others? Or take away one element and give them another one? Also, while not common, isn't it technically possible that someone besides the Avatar can have control over 2 or more elements? It's not magically impossible for some reason, it just overtaxes the user - but as we see with specialty benders over the franchise, it's quite possible that someone else could withstand that...
      It's all so much more complicated...
      In my opinion it would be much more elegant to just have humans figure it out randomly under their own power, with genetics and their inherent spiritual connection dictating whether they're able to use an element or not. Then you could have some high-level spirits get cold feet because the puny humans have become sooo powerful - so they twist the fabric of the world so that anyone can only ever control one element. That however has the side effect that one person has to serve as the nexus of this separation, the Avatar. They then task them to "keep balance" to preserve this system.
      Or something in that direction.
      It doesn't help that this all is wrapped into an almost 1:1 repeat of season 1: Korra rebels against her father figure and runs off with the totally-not-evil high society water bender, just be used by him to get into a position of power. When she finally realizes that and tries to stand against him, he takes her out with his unnatural abilities - at which point she has a vision from a previous Avatar who shows her visions of the past events that lead to the current situation. Etc...

      @@SKy_the_Thunder All of thoughts, I don't necessary think the Avatar Wan story is bad. But much like Korra, cool ideas, implemented terribly. It adds too much fat when this is ultimately the high point in the Civil war arc, but they thought we needed an intermission to learn about Wan and it just doesn't flow properly.

      @@SKy_the_Thunder oh you again. Youre not really the brightest are ya?
      Look. Powers are given bending is learned. If you disagree with that your favorite show atla already established this logic
      1 people are born with element powers. If powers are gifted just by observing then why is bending genetic? And shouldn't sokka be able to bend by just observing water scrolls?
      2 we know toph learned eartbending from the original eartbenders right. But did they give her powers? No. She was already born with powers but she still learned bending from badgermoles. This is her litteral quote "they not only teached me how to use eartbending as a martial arts but as a extencion of my senses" this line litteraly confirmed that what the animals teach are the martial art of bending
      3 atla never said that animals gave humans powers. That's just what people assume with actually no reason to think that. They only said they teached humans bending which they did. They teached them how to use the elements like wan who learned 2 years from that white dragon.
      I see you are not able to watch this show without direct explanation of what happens or whats established. The show except us to figure it out by ourselves with the obvious details they put in
