This happened because the sports were seen as dangerous and lived in the same world as humans.
Funny but you actually can find Juans in Asia, such as in the Philippines! This is a result of the Philippines being a colony of Spain for around 400 years.
The spirit telling Wan that "[the other lion turtle] is on the other side of none-of-your-business valley" recalls a scene in "The Blind Bandit" when an earthbender student told Aang that Earth Rumble VI was located "at the isle of none-ya business".
Wan's acquisition of fire through deception fits with the thematic theft of fire, in which an individual steals fire for the benefit of humanity. In this case, Wan's acquirement of firebending indirectly helped bring balance to both the physical and spirit realms. Like Maui Prometheus And others
It's not that the Chus (Xhus? Shus?) had firebending powers, they just had the means and resources to make weaponry and thus the authority to hold rank and loyalty. They had real weapons made of steel. To an unarmed person like Wan, the Chus are unstoppable. It's like the myth of Prometheus, how Prometheus stole the power of fire and gave it to the humans.
So idk if anyone had already commented this, but all the lion turtles bend energy/chi. The different elements are made from different flows of chi and so when a lion turtle unlocks a certain flow of chi, it gives/biases the new bender towards that element. It’s like how all computer code is at its core binary, but depending on the combinations of 1s and 0s you’ll get different commands and results. The lion turtles themselves are biased to the flow of chi that grants them their element but they are so ancient it is believed that they created this idea of chi flow. Guru Patik in ATLA talks about this when unlocking Aang’s chakras; that all the elements were fundamentally connected and were just different expressions of the same core chi/energy of the universe, which is why more advanced techniques like lightning come from fundamental combinations in elements. Lightning specifically is a firebender’s ability to make their chi flow in a way similar to that of a water bender. Since they are biased to fire, they’ll never be able to bend water, but by directing the flow of chi in a way similar to water bending, they can achieve a level of fire that is closer to water and blurs the line a little bit. Thus, the ability to control lightning, which is a plasma that is more fluid-like than fire, a plasma that is more gas-like. So in short, Sheera was correct that they can all take bending away, however, there is a reason why they can only give and receive one element. Anyway, I really like how these episodes really blew the ATLA world to a new level and I hope this clears some things up.
This was refreshing!

lovely
Man ya'll catch everything in these episodes
I love watching you guys watch and also discuss it
YES FINALLY THEY STARTED WATCHING THE PART I WANTED THEM TO SEE
The first Fire Sage to talk in this episode is voiced by Serena Williams :D
She also voiced one of the guards in charge of Iroh in ATLA
easily the best two episodes of korra imo
The water from that pond is the same water that saved Aang after Azula shot him
its not.
It’s the same type of water but that is the spirit oasis where the koi fish swam
I always wondered if it might be the same pond of water Korra's in right now.
"Of course there are more lion turtles. Dozens of them!"
Always a line that makes my head spin. Probably the best two patter in all of Korra
Yaaaaaas Sheera, Queen of Breaking it Down!!!!
These 2 episodes are easily the best of season 2.
