I love that they added rollback netcode and added a good ammount of QoL features......but crossplay would have helped tremendeously soo i hope maybe down the line they have the ability to add crossplay little by little
i love french bread sprites, they are timeless to me. But I am also the type of person who would take another streetfighter with third strike sprites above 3d graphics. They could release another darkstalkers with the same sprites and id be down!
My issue is with marketing. They set themselves up with expectations with the added 2. I saw someone make a comparison with SF alpha, and they all look the same with mixed mechanics, but it isn't the 90s anymore. People would've been pissed if sf6 was just like 5 but with rollback. If it was just called under night in birth sys celes, people wouldn't really complain. But no, they haphazardly slapped a 2 on there without thinking how much it would change perception. This says nothing about the quality of the game itself, but marketing seems like a blunder.
On the other hand, the title naming of the installments is really confusing for the uninitiated and slapping a 2 on it makes it easier to identify the correct version
You are not wrong but I have doubts that marketing would have made a difference in terms of player numbers. Take myself as an example. I play a ton of FGs and am very much tuned into all the news surrounding the genre, even games I outright don't play like DBFZ and MK. I play UNI very casually despite how much I love its gameplay and art style. For a person like me, the addition of rollback and a few characters and QoL makes the 2 at the end warranted. For people who are either entirely new to the genre or who just casually play a game of SF or Tekken here and there, whatever they chose to do marketing wise would not have swayed them either way. The playerbase for UNI is too small and its name alone does not have the same reach as the bigger games....which is a shame because UNI is the definition of an FG gem, imo.
I absolutely think this feels like a brand new game. The new combos and abilities each character has, including inv reversal, makes the entire game feel different.
I disagree on the $50 price tag for this game yet alone stating it would be fine with rollback netcode only. This should have been a simple update to CLR or purchasers to CLR got a big discount on the new game. Charge $25-30 for it and I would have been completely fine with it. While it's a good game overall, I think, as consumers, we should have received more out of the $50. They could of easily used a good upscaler to update the sprites to a higher resolution to make the game look nicer. Addionally, would of loved to see Cross play. If you really want your game to sell well, you really need to give 110%. To add, the PC port is terrible. I guess they didn't learn much from Melty Blood Type Lumina. This is why you have betas on all platforms to avoid problems.
The issue I had with uniclr was the delay netcode, so I'll give uni2 a try. The price is not great and the dlc schedule is really bad, but it looks hectic and I'm into that. Hoping the community stays at a decent size for a while
@@kursna Enough time has passed, Under Night In Birth II has now been patched. Can we now all admit that Under Night In Birth II is the new greatest fighting game in the world for all eternity, that anyone who disagrees with me is wrong, and we need to spread the word worldwide like it's the newest wave of Kagura Bachi fever? Matter of fact, spread some more Kagura Bachi love to Japan too! SO gogogo, boys, tell the whole world this: Lobotomy Kaisen is dead, & LOBOTOMY IN-BIRTH HAS BEEN BORN!!!!!!!
I do remember hearing that french bread was having a ton of trouble getting rollback on their old game engine, and due to legal reasons they couldn't get any external help for it because the game engine was basically the only thing the company technically "owned". I don't know if this is for sure the story, but I wouldn't be surprised if being sponsored by Type Moon to make Melty Blood 2 was their excuse to build a whole new engine from the ground up with rollback in mind, and afterwards they went back and ported under night into the new engine.
For those who don't know this is the third iteration of Under Night 1. Uniel 2. Unist (Uniclr) 3. Uni2 Sys Celes And yes, they all have the same look, feel, and gameplay. The game is actually over a decade old, and tbh, it would be great if they could update the game engine or improve the graphics. With ArcSys behind their backs, they likely have the resources to do so. However, it's worth noting that French Bread hasn't been known for being the most diligent team. The first Steam port for UNIEL took around 4 years to happen iirc, and they release patches and new characters at an extremely slow rate. I don't think they will risk making any drastic changes to the dev team or game engine unless being forced to. We used to joke about French Bread going on a vacation when we were still patiently waiting for UniST on Steam. It took them another 2 years to make it happen.
I'm really hoping this game sells well. It won't spread to a casual audience, I think that's safe to say, but with all the new improvements and specifically the new netcode, I hope lots of FGC people give it a shot. French Bread are clearly a small team who have a huge amount of passion and love for fighting games and I think they deserve to be recognised for it. No crossplay does sting, I can't lie, but I think Kamone said on stream once that they didn't add it because they just had no money for it. I really hope that with enough money from sales, and ArcSys's expertise, they can add crossplay in later.
Lo malo es que es muy caro el juego como quiere que venda ? Esa gente no aprende el precio fuera más acceble venden mucho más y más ! Se supone q son inteligentes pero bueno !! Cómo el melty Blood !! Nmn
Also IMO, I've always preferred the look of sprite-based games over 3D, and Under Night has some of the best, most gorgeous looking sprites in fighting game history, so them not changing anything there is actually a huge W.
I love Under Night... I would've been happy if they just put roll-back netcode on it, but I will support a new one. I just hope that people support it this time.
As someone who hasn't really reignited interest since the PS3 version, I've been wanting lots of new characters, and 3 isn't gonna impress me. That was a bummer to me even with BlazBlue: Continuum Shift 13 and a half years ago, and that was a game I was much more passionate about; still didn't feel like a complete sequel until all the DLC and Relius were put in (Extend). Under Night's previous updates drip feed was even lamer, with just 1 character last time. The launch roster should have doubled by now. And there should be more new going on than just adding basically a KoF roll. Simply adding rollback to mostly still the same game does not justify calling it a 2. Every other fighting game that adds rollback does not call it a sequel, unless they already were doing an actual sequel and rollback was being developed into it from the beginning incidentally.
Crossplay is really the only thing this game is missing imo, love the new color editor. I also really like the lobby avatars in GBFVR, and it would have been cool to have UNI2 lobbies where you can see other players running around. Everything they added are good additions, though. Just wish this game could get the love it deserves from the greater gaming community.
off the top of my head they added: - rollback netcode. - new core universal system mechanics (Creeping Edge and Celestial Vorpal). - 3 new characters *on release* (with 3 more additional dlc characters down the line). - some balance changes (some of which were widely wanted changes - looking at you Byakuya and Vatista~), alongside new moves on every character in the pre-existing cast. - a good replay system, which also allows you to take control of your character at any point in the replay to play test what you could do differently. - custom colour palettes for characters. - New Arcade stories. There might be more I'm not remembering~
funny enough, both this game and granblue are under the arcsystems umbrella, entered a new, secondary version, got rollback netcode, but the reception for gbvsr and uni-2 are night and day--to me, that is. I think it's interesting because the reception of under night was that it shipped as it was going to be, and that's what everyone was expecting. Granblue severely needed rollback netcode, and the game stagnated for years outside of japan because of that. Needless to say, I had a 2 options to choose from as to where should I spend 50 bucks for a sequel to a fighting game, and you can guess which studio is getting that money. :)
A huge difference in perception is that GBVSR sells itself as an expansion to the original game. Uni-2 sells itself as a sequel. That's why Rising is getting so much of a better reception, it didn't overpromise. I really think FB should have just not put the 2 on the title. This feels like Capcom releasing Super Street Fighter 4 but calling it SFV. There's expectations tied to what comes from a full sequel. TL;DR: Marketing team blundered for Uni, but the gameplay team did their job as well as they usually do.

@@otoed1 the issue is both. not only are sprites not cheap, they're also time consuming to make. new visuals for *every character* for the simple reason of "just because" would mean uni2 wouldn't come out until the latter half of the decade. the sprites as they are look amazing anyway, there's literally no reason to change them.
If you remember the 2d era especially KOF…they don’t need to reanimate all the sprites 😉 that’s all I’m sayin, still love the game just a little disappointed I didn’t get more for the price, love the channel too your responsible for getting me back into under night 🥴

with how similar it is, woulda been nice if they just updated the previous one. i love fighting games but releasing full on "sequels" in this form is frustrating. same thing with guilty gear xrd, there did not need to be 3 of them with ever so slight changes. I dont want to have to spend another $50 on a barely updated game, yet i also dont wanna miss out on the new stuff. this is like paying $50 for 3 dlc characters if you already have the previous game. guilty gear strive and dragonball fighterz have made way bigger changes to their gameplay through updates (new mechnics, moves, ui, ect, than this game is with a full blown separate release. roll back is great, but why not just add it to the existing one? they did this with accent core, xrd, and fighterz. im pretty sure it even happened with some retro snk fighters. (not to mention no crossplay and the horrid pc port that barely works) this release feels nothing short of lazy
I think they should have updated the other game, maybe sell it for a fair price, and call it a day. 50€ for a game that is essentially the same as the previous one, even if it changes some mechanics or adds rollback, is too much imho. Specially for a game that is going to die in a couple of weeks because we all know how fighting games lose players pretty quick and it's going to be complicated to find matches. I understand there is people who is fine with this, and that's OK, I understand the reasons to not do any new graphics, and honestly I'm fine with that, but this kind of business practice doesn't go with me. Id rather wait a couple of years until it's very cheap on Steam or I can get a key cheap, possibly with all DLCs unlocked.
It’s not the sprites 🤦🏻 capcom reused sf sprites for years in different games, this feels like the lifebars didn’t even get a change, and the gameplay feels almost exactly the same, well not the same but the differences are small
No crossplay, playstation exclusive beta, and now shitty pc port. I cant imagine how well intact the playerbase is gonna be now, with pc having this big of a issue, and tekken 8 coming out very soon, there no way this isn't gonna be a discord game before the new dlc comes out hard pass.
I feel like the game just looks a bit too ugly for the 50 dollar price I do think its a cool game but i can understand why people wouldnt be too happy about it
Has an interest aesthetic, but looks too much like type lumina, wich was a failure of a game to me... I just dont trust the company enough, and the price of the game is not convincing. I think ill pass on it.
Same, i was very interested in the game but the dlc character release schedule and being super niche. It'll be a discord fighter in a month. I just cant pull the trigger on it when games like Sf6, T8 and Granblue exist.
it's not gonna be a discord fighter because the rollback means you don't need to play vs people close to you as well as the increased general interest in fighting games because of the 3 games you mentioned, people might branch into games like undernight more@@PunishedKuru

What? This game plays literally nothing like MBTL.
@@PunishedKuru💯 you'd have to be a big fan of the series or anime fighters in general. Wait for a sale. Steam spring sale(?).
