Yeah, that was brilliant. In Karate Kid 2 at first he was kinda goofy. First thing he did was making fun of Daniel and smiling, and at the end he was angry and hungry for revenge. The way they reversed this here is fantastic.

No. Chozen is not Mr. Miyagi. Chozen wisdom is not even close than Mr. Miyagi. Even though his extensive knowledge about Miyagi - Do is broader now in Cobra Kai series.
But, like the Bartender ever said to Daniel while he is in Tokyo. There is a belief in Japanese culture that even the dead one still wants to reach their beloved one. So, possibly, Sensei Miyagi's soul still wants to help Danie, but at this time his soul reaches Daniel through Chozen. 😇

That's true he's easily the most redeemed villain in this series. If I'm being honest though I never really disliked him in Karate Kid 2 either. Sure he was a bully and sure he had a very twisted version of honor but it sounds like most of the corruption came from his uncle. If Sato and Miyagi had made up them Chozen and Daniel probably could have been friends. If Daniel would let go of the anger he has towards Johnny then they could probably become friends like Chozen and Daniel currently are. Although Johnny would also need to let go of his grudge too though. The only kid villain who I feel could not be redeemed is Mike Barnes. That guy was easily the worst of the three he was like a more experienced version of Dutch. I really hope he returns in season 5.

@Benjamin Tyus That's one thing that I wasn't sure about what changed Chozen to kind hearted as Kumiko said that Chozen is a changed person. I can only guess that he changed because he was letting it go about his honor (he said he wanted to do a death match with Daniel because Daniel insulted his honor), or because the death of his uncle Sato brought sadness to him (even though Sato said that he is dead to Chozen meaning he doesn't care for Chozen anymore which angered Chozen) or because he was appreciative to Daniel for not murdering him in the death match even though Daniel had a perfect opportunity to murder Chozen (even though Chozen will call that "act of coward" since he said that to Mr. Miyagi when Mr. Miyagi had a perfect opportunity to murder Chozen with a spear). Kreese on the other hand was an army captain and a karate champion which is why Kreese doesn't let go of his pride.

Daniel was already in the verge of breaking through. He understood he is hot headed, and instead of fighting it, decided to keep up the pace and take it to the next level. He wants to remove any need of being hot-headed, by simply being the most prepared at any given situation. Jhonny got to the same conclusion by a different path, they both embraced their nature, and decided to be the best version of themselves, instead of someone else, hence, forming the super-dojo. This is perhaps the greatest teaching of the series. Doesn't matter how you learn it, but that you learn it, and what you do with it.

This was such an epic moment in this series. Chozen was introduced as perhaps one of Karate Kid's most ferocious and irredeemable character, and for the past thirty years, we have been wondering if he would come back to reap his revenge on Daniel. And in many ways, this was vengeance, for that annoying nose honk that Daniel gave him. But the most amazing thing is that Chozen has actually found his peace, when we all thought that he would continue to carry his uncle's hatred for Miyagi-Do Karate. But as it so happens, it was Daniel that was blind the whole time, because he was taught the self-defense area of Miyagi-Do Karate, not the offensive side of it, and when Chosen said that sometimes the best defense is offense, he could not be more right. Sometimes, it takes being willing to go on the offensive to protect your life than spend your days living on the defense. I can say without a shred of doubt that Chozen has become one of my favorite characters in this franchise, and he was already badass before when he was an antagonist, but now he's amazing as an ally and an actual teacher for Daniel.

It's remarkable what a great writing team can do with a character like this. In fact, if Cobra Kai hasn't done the backstory already, they could do a spinoff miniseries where a young and defeated Chozen gets picked up by a Buddhist temple or something.

Daniel was always a hot head and short tempered. Part of the point of Cobra Kai is how these characters could have been or had the life of their enemy depending on who their teacher was.
Sato was full of hate when Miyagi came back to Okinawa in KK2. He was an arrogant, greedy, win at all costs businessman and his attitude greatly impacted Chozen.
Johnny could have been Daniel and Daniel Johnny if the circumstances were a little different and they had different teachers.
Daniel grew up kind of poor and became rich and Johnny grew up rich and became poor. Johnny teaching Miguel was basically like if a softer version of Kreese had trained Daniel. It's all about the importance of father figures and role models and how everyone sees themselves as the good guy in their own story. The fact that Daniel is often angry and not centered despite having a life as an adult that he could only have dreamed of as a kid says a lot. He knows he has some issues and has a long way to go to be like Miyagi.

I do love the fact that Chozen is, hands-down, the better fighter and basically hands Daniel his ass. Daniel is clearly only just getting back into karate, whereas Sato's teachings have become Chozen's career and lifestyle. It only makes sense that Chozen is now on another level than Daniel - and his changed personality and temperament says it all. He's no longer the young bully overcompensating for his insecurity... but a proud, confident man who has gained strength by conquering his own weakness. He's now essentially become Mr. Miyagi.

      Very cool discussion!
If the writers Schlossberg etc. are smart (and i am sure they are), i see only following scenario in the future:
After Silver and Barnes team up with Kreese, Johnny and Daniel are outmatched. Then its 3 vs 2, not chance for the 2.
If the writers are not smart, they bring Johnny´s buddy Bobby (the "priest") to help them. Otherwise IT HAS TO BE CHOZEN!
      I see it coming:
Daniel and Johnny getting beat up by Kreese, Silver and Barnes, and Daniel gives Chozen a call to come to LA to help them and Miyiago Do to survive in America.
Chozen comes over, and teaches the kids in Daniel´s garden not just the defensive, peasfull Miyagi Do style, but also the one he taught to Daniel.
And later we gonna see something like:
      1) Johnny vs. Kreese:
This match has to come since Cobra Kai was written for the Johnny character primary. To get his son back he has to beat Kreese once and for all.
      2) Daniel vs Barnes:
Mike is still so mad at him since he lost to a cheap Kata, he was beating Daniel with ease before. Remember he was the toughest of all of Daniel´s opponents. When Daniel hit Chozen and Johnny they were hurt by it, but Barnes took all of Daniel´s shots and just eated them up without being hurt.
So Barnes wants to kick Daniel´s ass in a street fight, and Daniel can only win beacuse of the style Chozen taught him.
      3) Chozen vs. Silver:
Silver is BY FAR the best and most dangerous of all the Cobra Kai fighters. Kreese was defated by Miyagi with ease, but even Silver could not land a blow on Miyagi, he gave him a better fight and was able to stand longer. Silva would eat Johnny and Barnes for breakfast.
Silver from what we know HATES all oriental/asien people, dont matter if they are from Vietnam, Japan or China.
And fight Nr. 3 would be THE BEST FIGHTER OF COBRA KAI vs THE BEST FIGHTER OF MIYAGO DO (Sato and Miyagi are gone), and Chozen would of course show Silver that ORIGINAL Karate from Okinawa is more offective as this AMERICAN Karate by Miyagi Do.
      Your thoughts about that?

And Chozen, very importantly, forgives Daniel for the perceived insults when they were children, and Daniel humbly asks the better karate-ka to train him, without any of the hubris or ego that we see him sometimes show when dealing with Cobra-kai people (which is kinda understandable, considering that he's a lot more traumatized by those events than his experiences in Okinawa).

Well the thing I like about acts like this is in order to make a spectacular performance, you have to invoke a little truth into it. For example when he said "I waited a long time for this." that was the truth, he waited a long time to psyche Daniel like Daniel did him. That said, it makes sense why he'd act hostile to Daniel at first.
For starters, I believe he was savvy enough to know that Daniel was still mad at him for his actions. So naturally if he were to show up friendly, he wouldn't have believed him off the get go. The sparring and teaching as well as the joke, were meant to ease Daniel into the idea that he has changed after all.
Second, in Part II when he first met Daniel and Miyagi, he did act friendly to them, but it was a ploy to get them alone so Sato could confront Miyagi. Naturally if he acted like that again Daniel would thought he was tricking him right away. Which he was. Just not in the way Daniel expected.

I like that Chozen showed his comical side to Daniel like we see in KK part 2, but it's out of a sense of camaraderie instead of mean spirit.

Seeing Chozen again was such a delight, love that actor. He's so wonderful in everything he does. What a beautiful, though short, redemption arc the character had. Loved how he basically trolled Daniel with his sour demeanor until he could play his joke, then became a warm friend. I really hope we get to see him again in season 4. And as someone else said, the fact that Chozen's technique saved Daniel in the finale was pure poetry. Great writing.

As someone who has only watched Cobra Kai, I thought the nose honk was pretty funny. The writing celebrates its history unlike many franchises these days. It makes it super rewarding to go back and find out where all the OG references come from.

"If an enemy insists on war then you take away his ability to wage it."
That was very Mr. Miyagi-esque. Well done Chozen. He's really become something. I love the fact that he held nothing back with Myagi-Do. He would unleash it on his enemy at full capacity.

Very true but I think the films did hint that Miyagi, was holding back many times. He got the upper hand at Kreese and terry silver, if he wanted to kill he most def could have. It’s just as Chozen said something Miyagi didn’t want to teach Daniel, either to protect or shield him from what his Karate is capable of.

@Eric Santana Just like Kumiko said that Chozen is a changed person, something tells me that after Chozen lost the death match against Daniel he first passed out and when he woke up he became a changed person and he apologized to Kumiko and maybe he was also going to apologize to Daniel but unfortunately, Daniel and Mr. Miyagi must have caught the next flight at night back to California and with Daniel returning to Okinawa, that gave Kumiko the opportunity to call Chozen to talk to Daniel.

@@kleimbach77 most people confess their sins to God and find peace and most people confess to their family and friends and make peace. As long as you confess to either family, friends or God or all then you will be at peace and so will they when all is forgiven and in time you change for God, and it creates a whole new life for you and your family even your own family and friends. Confess + Honesty × changing habits × Faithfulness × daily conversation or prayer or both to God = Peace and possible acceptance to Heaven but remember only you yourself will be at peace with God. @@afriendofbean Well, they covered it in that episode. Chozen was still an angry young guy after the fight, but Sato refused to give up on him and taught him the right way. Chozen's redemption is as much Sato's redemption as his because Sato had been angry for 40 years and it was his fault Chozen turned out like that.
