  • One product that is overlooked in most paint projects is epoxy primer. Fred, with a little bit of sarcasm, talks about why you should use it and shows you how to use epoxy primer along with the benefits of using it.

A good epoxy seals the metal like a chemical plastic wrap. It bonds to 80 grit, sealing from moisture. 2k primer, body filler all absorb water, so no wet sanding. Shoot your high-build, sand with acrylic blocks, apply filler after metal work. If grinding to bare metal to stud weld, re-apply spot epoxy. Then filler, glaze, primer to perfection. Apply epoxy when paint ready and paint. Spray 3 coats of inter-coat clear often called flow coat but actually double clear. Wet sand with 1k, 1,3k and clean. Now comes 2-3 coats of European style clear called high solids. Then sit aside for a week to allow inter-coat to shrink & off gas as it shrinks before wet sanding. Once high solids is sprayed, it may not need more than buffing. You are done! Remember, additives for "UV" a, b & c proactive chemical package rises to the top! Wet sanding removes this protection. This is why a double clear or "Flow Coat" is desirable. Buffing does not remove UV protection. My best long term shine comes from no sanding just buffing. And wait 30+ days before adding a ceramic coating. Like concrete, the clear has to cure by off-gassing and shrinking. High solids clear shrinks less, leaving little or no orange peel as it off-gasses leaving a tough deep clear finish. This how Ryan Evan's does it at Counts Kustom's and many others. Extra time, more material, charge for it, but enjoy the results. DK, Retired; ASE Master tech since 78.

I was really surprised to hear about the pot life on epoxy primer. I’m used to things setting up so quickly that this seems like less pressure to get something sprayed. Good call on the material data sheet. Too many people these days don’t bother to read any instructions and then wonder why things don’t last. This is true not for just paint but all sorts of materials. Thanks for another great video!!

I know epoxy primers and paint are used on boats. Always figured if it's good enough for a boat it should be stellar for a car. Fred's confirmation makes the idea credible! 👍

I've used the SPI epoxy for a few projects. Great products! What about when you burn through the primer and need to put on another coat before you spray high build? Do you go back down to 80 grit on the bare metal spots?

Did not know there was a difference between Epoxy and 2K. I used 2k about 13 years ago on the car roof and all of a sudden, catastrophic paint failure down to the metal. I will use epoxy this time. Lots of good info for me.

@@jermaineenglish5732yes. Like he said, read the data sheet. It will tell you what you can coat other products from their lineup. It also gives tons of other crucial info, like what pressures to spray at.
Also, PPG Shopline series EP only gives you 3 days to reshoot with 2k Primer, or you'll have to scuff it again. So read each data sheet!
      1. EP over bare steel and body work I normally do 2 coats.
      2. Then coat with a 2k high build sandable primer. You can do 2 coats. Then block sand. I don't go any higher than 400 grit. While some go to 600.
      3. Wipe down VERY well multiple times with wax & grease remover and non lint cloths, until no more residue is on the rag.
      4. Right before srpaying the paint, wipe down lightly with a tack rag to remove any dust/lint/bugs.
      5. Spray with color coat as many coats as you prefer.
      6. Run rack cloth.
      7. Finish with as many Clear Coats as you prefer.

What particular degreaser do you recommend after sanding before applying epoxy primer? Also, when sanding the rust off the metal, do you recommend finishing it off with a fine high grit sand paper to get it ultra smooth or it’s not necessary? Thanks!
