Surprised you didn't mention the other 556 I variations. Those steel sundials in blue or brown look amazing and you don't have the date, plus applied indices and nicer hands.
Personally, I have the mother of pearl edition and it's incredible versatile. Utilitarian looks on the outside, more dressy look & feel on the watch face which appears almost black 90% if the time. Most likely only the wearer will ever know how beautiful the mother of pearl is

I have both the 556 (in the I B iteration) and 104, and enjoy wearing both depending on my attire and the situation. I prefer wearing the 556 for dressier occasions, and the 104 for blue jeans and leather boots type of days. Both are great watches!
    Great review, Guy! 👍🏼

I've owned this watch and its truly great, I had it on leather, the bracelet is great quality and only costs around £200. I now own a Sinn 356 Flieger Chronograph, lovely watch. Sinn most underrated watch company out there! its meant to look like a plane instrument hence the hand design. great review, PS this can be dressed up with a nice strap, can be strap monster. and the metal bracelet Torx screws can be pain in the a*se, you have to use 2 tools at once to release a link, the reason for divers extension is they have same 20mm strap for all models.... hence the cheap price, also comes boxed better than the watch. with tools etc.

Great review Guy. Personally, I like the 556a better. The perfect size, 3-6-9(and 12) numerals, matt dial, drilled lugs, 200 m depth rating, workhorse ETA movement, German build quality. It’s the modern Rolex 1016, which is itself now out of reach for many enthusiasts. And, with the right strap/bracelet selection, the Sinn556 can very well be the one and only watch you’ll ever need.

  • @MrOnion2001
    @MrOnion2001 4 года назад +4

To your question about the category of watch: I think this model is a variant of the model with the arabic numerals and this in turn is a wrist watch variant of an cockpit instrument watch (which Sinn produces also, have a look at the point "Navigationsborduhren" / "cockpit clocks" [link does not work here]) - according to this I would classify as an reduced "aviation watch" in a portable form.
I have the "I B" model: indices with (dark) blue dial. I think it is nicer because of the applied indices and the "friendlier" colour with sunburst effect. The hands are "reaching" to the center, so the angle between the hands supports the legibility instead of just pointing at the index. This model has still kind of toolish character but it is more dressy - imo perhaps the "nearly perfect" balance between sporty and elegant and therefore very versatile.

I would not change the hands one wit. The black “powder coating” on the hands allows the eye to jump to where it is needed- and allows the hands to “float” on the dial. Superb design. A highly polished hand? Maybe for a jewellery watch - a Rolex or A Grand Seiko- but never for a serious watch like this.

about the AR coating: It docent only can get scratched, it WILL get scratched on the 556. I own this watch and when you wear it as an everyday watch, you will get visible scratches and thats one of the 2 only downsides i have with this watch (the other is the weak lume).
I would recommend to polish the AR coating down then its to messed up to be useful anymore and don't replace the crystal because this will happen again

You need to remember people reviewing watches have to find negatives in their mind to seem like they offer a balanced opinion. I own this watch and the bracelet is fine exactly how it comes. Another watch reviewer on youtube bellyaches so much about the lack of a half link , which is not possible with these links and yet doesn't understand how the clasp works or where the Sinn name even comes from. RUclips videos are someone elses opinion and not necessarily fact.

Very good review my friend. Nice style, comprehensive yet chatty. As this is your friends watch, and he may have got it some time ago, I think it has the ETA 2824 movement inside. When you do a close up of the back you can just see the numbers by the balance wheel, etched in to the bridge. I really toyed with this watch but just felt it a little too austere. I think it would be a winner with the sunray blue dial and its more finessed finishing.

I've long considered this watch, but it used to be a hell of a lot cheaper a few years back.
The fact that brands like Hamilton are moving away from the 2824 and installing the H-10 with it's massive power reserve, it feels like the 556 is certainly due an update.

Big advantage over Hamikton is that comes with a screw down crown to ensure water resistance. Hamilton push in and reason why I have not bought a hamilton

Like your review and own the Sinn 556i. It’s actually not brushed but satinized and can be dressed up with leather straps quite good! Cheers from Switzerland

Very nice. Im not even in the market for a watch right now, but why arent there more watches in the 40 mm range? It seems like they jump from 38 to 42

Check for Sinn 556i earlier models with cal. ETA 2824-2 and lumed minutes track on the dial (quite rar!) is the way to go. Isn’t get easier to get it but at least try your 🍀. It’s a great peace for ya collection.

I'm amazed that you don't love the hands and don't see the Sinn as a pilot watch. If you were a pilot, you would instantly recognize the handset as a replica of traditional military cockpit instruments -- white on black with a stubby short hand, to make it instantly clear which one is which (e.g. the short one is the "thousands" on your altimeter, while the long one is the "hundreds"). Great watch, but seems a little pricey. In the meantime, I'll try to be satisfied with my Addiesdive MY-H2. It's not nearly as perfect but about 3 percent of the cost which, with screw down crown and caseback and sapphire crystal with excellent AR coating, is amazing when you think about it.

Without being philosophical, it's a basic casual watch. And while I don't doubt it's quality, I wouldn't pay 1300 for a watch that looks like 250 -but as always: beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. Good review :-)

The 556i is my most expensive watch to date and I absolutely love it. IMHO it´s a contemporary interpretation of the classic Flieger watch. More robust, timeless and versatile, but nonetheless with an unmistakable avaiation heritage.

i have a steinhart ocean one 39 and for under $500 idk if you can beat it. Ceramic bezel, sapphire crystal, good movement etc... sure its not a rolex but its not really the same price range where you’d get one or the other. I hear people say just get a real rolex but with how much they cost it was wear an homage piece or wait 20 years to wear the watch i like the look of.

Up until a couple months ago this model had the Top Grade ETA 2824. The Sellita movement really just rolled out to this model. How do you feel about that personally?

My everyday watch right now is hamilton khaki field mechanical and I love it. BUT I really need a date window, just one of those people who forget what date it is quite often. This seems like the perfect watch, though price is 2x
The hamilton khaki auto dial is to complicated for me.

So you would prefer a matte black dial and no date...hmm, interesting because the 556A actually has a matte black dial and the date is at 4.30 and so discreet that, unless you are looking for it, you can barely see it.
I have the 556A and I can tell you that I just adore it! As an everyday piece, this watch is just near perfection😊

makes it harder to get repaired and more expensive, they use a top grade selita movement now which runs with in COSC tolerances.

38 hours power reserve usually means if you put the watch off it will last 24 hours or a few hours more because it is never fully wound when you work on your desk or with your computer. So you can not use that watch in a rotation next day you wanna put it on and it is stopped. İ know they use top-grade movement bur a little mainspring upgrade at least a 50-hour reserve please

That is a ETA, you can even see the 2824-2 above the balance at 17.50. Its not a selita at this point, they changed over a little later.

I am absolutely not sure which watch to buy. I hope you can help me ! You can choose between the Sinn 556i as in the review or the far cheaper Hamilton Khaki Field Automatic 38mm version! Do you think it's worth buying the much more expensive Sinn 556i? Best regards !!

This watch doesn't really compete with the Hamilton Khaki, it competes far more obviously with the Archimede Outdoor or damasko DS30 but you don't mention either even though they are far better contenders in the best $1k watch quest.
