  • The Etsumi-Hoku Line (越美北線, Etsumi-hoku-sen) is a railway line operated by West Japan Railway Company (JR West) in Fukui Prefecture, Japan. The line extends 52.5 km (32.6 mi) from Echizen-Hanandō Station in Fukui to Kuzuryūko Station in Ōno with a total of 22 stations. It is also referred to as the Kuzuryū Line (九頭竜線, Kuzuryū-sen).
    The line was originally planned to connect to what is now the Nagaragawa Railway, but the last 24.0 km (14.9 mi) section that would have involved extensive tunneling was never commenced. A bus service provided a connection between the two lines until it ceased in 2002.

    I didn't realize until I was about an hour into this video...there's no graffiti anywhere! All the walls, buildings, bridge abutments...clean! As an American, this delights and astonishes me!

    The effort involved with digging so many long tunnels and erecting bridges on a regional line is astonishing.
    I love these smaller lines. They show that not everything in Japan is manicured and polished, though neat and clean. This adds a relaxing atmosphere to the trip. Greetings from Australia.

      It was projects like these that basically bankrupted JNR (predecessor to the current Japan Rail companies) and forced them to be privatized. I really did wish that they had finished the route to Hokunō Station as that would have made it more profitable.

    A real country interurban line! The US,had in New England and the MidWest,a whole series of lines,that interconnected,and you could at one time,literally ride from New York to Boston,on all the trolley lines! It took a while,but you saw the real countryside,not from 5000 feet! All gone,due to the greed of the Bankers,oil companies,and GM! Karma is coming back to haunt,and maybe[soon],the US,will get like Switzerland,and Japan,where everything is connected,and no one is left hanging! Thanks for an outstanding video,and scenery was spectacular 👌!! The engineering of that right of way,was awesome 👌! Thanks again!⛩️⛩️⛩️⛩️⛩️🚂🚂🚂

    Was this some kind of special trip with all the people taking photographs? Also, the automated announcements on Japanese trains always seem to go on for about five minutes. Whatever do they find to say?

    • @joeswanderings
      @joeswanderings Год назад +2

      A printed transcription of the announcements into the video description would be enlightening. We could use Google translate into the language of our choice. 🤔
      I am wondering if the photographers are the Japanese equivalent of train spotters.

    • @khamronsingame
      @khamronsingame Год назад +2

      It's mostly done for people with sight disabilities. A brief summary of what is usually announced (might have missed some since it's hard to hear): Thank you for using this train, destination of this train, the doors are opening/closing, turn your mobile phone to silent mode and refrain from talking on the phone, pick up a ticket when you board, pay the fare by the driver/let the driver know if you are getting off since he/she is the only person operating the train, this train has priority seats so give up your seat if you sit on it for someone that may need it, if you see any dangerous or suspicious objects then let the driver know, press the emergency button if there is an emergency, the train will depart soon. Also, everything is said in formal Japanese so it sounds longer than it really is.

    • @khamronsingame
      @khamronsingame Год назад +2

      @@joeswanderings The photographers are indeed train spotters. In Japanese, they're called "tetsudo otaku" or "railway enthusiasts". Rural trains have wrappings that are unique to the line and so are popular with train spotters.

    • @AndreiTupolev
      @AndreiTupolev Год назад +2

      @@khamronsingame Ah, like the much-loved "see it, say it, sorted!" in the UK

    • @khamronsingame
      @khamronsingame Год назад

      @@AndreiTupolev Honestly I wish Australian trains had an automated announcement system similar to Japan. Our trains, at least in Melbourne, are announced by the driver with a thick accent through horrible speakers so half the time you don't even know what they're saying.
